I plan on taking a full online course sometime in the next few years, but that's mostly for my own use rather than throwing around a degree.

a BA completely online seems a little sketchy.
An associates on the otherhand, I could see.

It's a joke and nobody will respect it if you're trying to have an actual career.

I think it depends on the school. For example i'm not sure what spencers major is but mine is Marketing Management from BU as well but at a sat. campus in lincoln. BU Is a private school and such has a PS price. My tuitiion is $3xx an hour. So each class that i complete once a month cost an even grand after books.... At the end i can go to BU and do the whole graduation thing. I may, i may not... just depends kegs will be involved but beyond that it's unknown. ok moving on... spencer can do the exact same thing. I go to school once a week for 4 very long hours. I have a ton of homework etc. Everything that can be expected for any BS that is accelerated. So as far as legit work, it's a very legit school...
Long story short. Spencer and I assumed in the same program can start the same day, finish the same day and get the same piece of paper. The difference. he never went to a class and I did. As far as employers go, who are they to say what was online and what wasn't. See what i'm saying????
One thing i'd like to toss into this discussion is, in this town i've found degrees are WORTHLESS. Atleast in my experiance. For example. When i worked at LBL everyone was far older than me. Also everyone had degrees. I had a HD and some AF tech school regarding bomb building... so as you can see lacking the whole experiance/college education. I was making just as much as any of them, worked the same hours and in a very short time was caught up to the rest of them. This is one example and i've heard/seen plenty of others. People with degrees working entry level jobs. NO OFFENSE to anyone here, but alot of those people i feel sorry for them. After spending all that time and money in school you are a manager at X whcih you could have done without a degree. Congrats on wasting your time and money.
i'll add more after other post.

In the same respect it seems to look better on a resume. Even if said job is unrelated to your degree.
no?

I would agree having looked at plenty of applications/resumes for employment.
I just think here unless you are going into a specalized field (medical, law, engineering) that you can skim by without a degree and have a life equal to that of someone with a degree. There are always the stories of self made millionairs with no degree and they dropped outta highschool... They make for great stories of inspiration but the reality is they are RARE.
Proven, individuals with degrees will typically make more than those without. Maybe it has more to do with the person than the degree idk. But there is something to be said about a degree. I think the problem with an online degree like from a completly online school is the employer then can wonder. Did you even take these classes or did you pay or benefit someone else to take them for you. I won't lie I just helped lindsay out a ton with a class that i'm very strong in and just took the class 6 months ago. Her teacher has no idea and no way to tell and thats really the problem with online courses. There is on way to confirm/identify who is actually completing the answers. Who's doing the work which then leaves you with a real problem at hiring. Especially when there is alot of money sitting on the table.
But if correctly done someone could take a class for someone else at UNL...
THis makes for an intresting discussion.
sorry about the 1038410984 typing/spelling/grammar errors. My brain is ****ing toasted from class tonight...

online college is SOMETIMES a joke....if you go to a good nationally respected college and do online courses thats one thing...i know some people doing web based pharmacy at Creighton but not for some measly 4 yr bus degree at some private no name like phoenix or others listed by other people....

not legit, and not gonna get you a real job. I've had a lot of online courses through universities, and they are nothing like the real class. online courses are half the work and twice as easy as regular courses. I think it's all bullshit and a waste of money since those universites cost twice as much as any well known public university.

schools are trying to make money, thats pretty much how it is. And by offering online courses, it costs the colleges less overhead yet students are still paying for the credit hours.

who you know>experience>piece of paper
I'm in the process of trying to play that card, we'll see if the knowing someone card works out. But I would say knowing anyone helps get your foot in the door. I've submitted resumes for jobs at Eaton with no response. I used my friend who works there as a referrer and got called back the next day, although it didn't get me anywhere as they wanted some experience. I was offered a job completely on a piece of paper known as my resume though which really doesn't have the exact experience they were looking for and I definitely didn't know anyone. So you never know what that thing you need to get in the door will be.
