if you are trying to lose weight and retain muscle then are most likely going to be doing cardio

if thats the case....i would suggest getting some BCAAs and some good protein

the bcaas are great for muscle repair that happens during cardio work....it helps with recovery too....and muscle loss will be minimal while losing weight

heres what i used to use:

bcaas - purple wraath ($40? for 90 servings)
protein - Optimum Nutrition 100% Gold Standard Whey (any flavor $40 for 75-80 scoops)

bcaas should be taken prior to workout.....protein whenever.....and if you want better muscle growth i would suggest Casien protein for night.....although this is horrible no matter what flavor.

1.5 grams per pound of body weight i think...

coop

1.5g/lb if you are heavy lifting......i would saturate your system which means no less than 1.5g/lb if you are trying to gain weight

to maintain - 1g/lb......i think a "normal" diet you need .7g/lb......but this is off if you are active

MOST of this protein should come from whole foods (tuna, chicken, red meat).

For example if you are 175lbs you need 262.5g and 175 of that should come from whole foods if possible.....shakes aer SUPPLEMENTS not a dietary staple

log your intake for 1 week......you will see you are nowhere near 260+g of protein.......

its just science.....if you SATURATE your system and couple that with intense workouts you WILL gain weight....

i wasnt gaining weight till i started eating 4k cals a day.....

SO true, sad but true.

BUT on the other hand I went from being 140 last year to 175-180 after working out, and protien. So idk now im stuck. Maybe I need a better workout plan.

(to supermatt)

actually no......muscle utilize energy.........so that takes calories from what you intake....

that is why bodybuilders can eat tons of calories nad not gain fat.....their muscles utilize all the energy...even if you are just sitting there with a skinny person....the metabolism of those muscles are eating away at calories

so protien is essential for muscle growth/retention whcih will stimulate "fat loss" (indirectly)

this helps get rid of the calories so you store less as fat

This is off topic,,,,,

but if your trying to gain muscle, should you work each muscle 1,2, or 3 times a week?

This is a very debated subject I want to see what people think

supeRtunermatt
23rd March 2008, 06:46 PM
that makes sense so you would determine how much to take based on your weight and how active you are?

there is no such thing as overtraining as long as your diet supplements it.....for huge gains i think that one should start with isolation exercises.....like chest days and leg days.....and this should be like 1-2 times a week.....once this tapers off as it does with any person....i think compound workouts should happen...and these could be 3-4 times a week

in theory you could work every muscle every day......its the diet people dont keep up that causes problems.....

coop

that makes sense so you would determine how much to take based on your weight and how active you are?

there are lots of calculators on how much you need......as a reference they are ok....but honestly...as long as calories IN are less than calories OUT you will lose weight...its WHAT calories go in is whether you retain muscle during it or not (as well as just a healthy diet)

huh, yeah I guess, some people say 1 time a week is plenty but some say 1 is only enough to maintain.

I thought doing fullbody routine 3x a week was good?

"you have to go big to get big"

if you want muscle growth you must lift heavy....and this usually means more rest between the workouts.....if you do fullbody 3x a week...you most likely are going to get some muscle growth but lots of toning.....and your weight will level off

This is the truth... I need to get back into the gym.

Being in Chicago with a Grandma thats was a Chef her whole life for Easter= weight gain.

What sucks the most is the part that you always want to lose the most (the gut) comes off last and is the hardest to get rid of.

You lose weight evenly, that's just one of the places where you store a lot of fat, so you have to get to some pretty low body-fat numbers to have defined abs.

strap a midget to your back and start running, you will lose weight.

coop
25th March 2008, 08:12 AM
i guess something that should be added to this:

if you are trying to get bigger aka muscle your diet should be 30% carb, 40% protein, and 30% fat

and if you are trying to retain muscle but lose weight your diet should be 40% carb, 40% protein, and 20% fat

a good way to see how much calories you are getting from food rather than a stupid online calculator is to just get the grams of carbs/pro/fat of what you are eating since this is what makes up your calories

1g of carb gives 4 cal
1g of protein gives 4 cal
1g of fat gives 9 cal

it is hard to get carbs and protein but its doable.....but if are not eating those calories clean then you will see that fat is the easiest to go over.....i suggest logging your food for a week...everything in.....i did this (i think whody ryan did as well one time) and its amazing how much fat you take in....no wonder your body stores it.....

*note that of the 20-30% fat you take in....it should come from good sources, which means omega-3 fats or and some sat fats.....no trans fats

I think you need a combinations of heroin, wings and horse semen.

coop

well the horse semen would be a good source of protein
wings would be too

howeever heroin is fatty
