my good computer got struck by lightening a while back. so i'm using this emachine piece of ****... 1ghz 128mb of ram etc etc but i put my other hdd from my good computer in it so i'd still have all my music and **** for the time being...
well i destroyed the cd rom tray out of fun while waiting for things to load by shoving pens and there and not retrieving them and what not.
this time i decide to punch the cd rom from the front of the case fairly hard...
now when i start my computer up with my hdd from my other computer it just says there is some missing or corrupt file and it cannot boot windows.
is it possible that punching it deleted a crucial file? lol

Will it boot at all???
disconnect the cd rom and try. (disconnect power from the back of the computer, press the on button to discharge computer. Find Cd rom from the inside of the case and pull on the really wide wire until it comes out.. Then disconnect the smaller one (power)
I have a 2.8? celeron sitting next to me with about 77x mb of ram or whatever number ram. I have a spare harddrive. IT's in a gateway.. but it was in working order the last time i used it. I have all the operating disks (windows xp home) and misc gateway **** that comes with it. even have 2 speakers and a monitor that i could toss in fairly cheap. If your interested in a better comp for pretty cheap let me know :)

It's possible you damaged your hard drive, but I doubt it's some permanent physical damage. It might need a format.
I've been driving around for almost a year now with a computer in my car, the hard drive is no more than 2 feet from the cone of the subwoofer and gets rattled to hell all the time, works fine for me, also been through temperature extremes of nebraska winter and summer.

lol
the computer will boot. but it tells me it cannot launch windows because a file is missing. it asks me to reinstall the file. i believe there is no real physical damage done to the hard drive as the computer actually boots and comes up with this black and white screen. i just don't have the file or the knowledge to reinstalll it

your windows installation was corrupted.
microsoft.com and google are your friend.
if you want to fix it you're going to have to get to know the recovery console aka command prompt very well.
if you have a laptop set it right next to your desktop and troubleshoot the error because you're going to be copying a lot of lines of text into a command prompt that have to be perfect
You could try plugging the hard drive into another computer that will boot into windows and seeing if the files are accessible through a different windows installation for backup, or if you don't care about backing up files, just wipe the drive and reinstall windows. If you are really desperate to backup files and don't have access to another computer or the knowledge to remove and install a hard drive you could install linux and access the windows partition to backup files.

from my experience, if you don't have the knowledge to remove and install a hard drive, you wont be able to install and run linux and access an other partition

well then bring it over to my house and give me $20 :)
I'll have anything backed up you need and the hard drive wiped with a fresh reinstall of winxp pro within 24 hours
