Super compact, no crappy small res screen, decent keyboard.
Yes it doesnt have a cd/dvd drive. if you really need that, then you should be buying macbook (or pro) anyways.

Even tho the price is rediculous... a SSD is insane. Supposedly full boot up time is under 10 seconds. Show me another fresh out of the box un-altered computer that will do that currently. Apple states instant on... thats about as instant as any computer right now.

Exactly... and seriously, apples software solution to steal a drive from other computers is decent. Sure you could just share the drive via network, but this is much quicker and simpler. That solves the whole issue right there. Plus just like most ultra portables, you can always get a external drive for cheap...
Hell the thing is a super strong performer with a core 2 duo at 1.8ghz, a SSD hard drive that is supposed to be faster than a 10000 rpm normal drive. Not too shabby for how small it is.
PLUS if you hate mac osx, you can natively install Vista/XP/Linux... well just about anything... and apple makes it super easy and simple for you using boot camp. Dual booting is already built in.
David

prez complained about no right click... is that still true on todays macs?
Yes and no. It has never been true that there is no right clicking, its just a matter of holding down the control key and clicking and that achieves the same affect. The laptops do NOT have more than one mouse button. However all apples standard mice have have two buttons (actually 4 total) and support right clicking, mac os x actually has always had right click built in.
Under Windows on any mac laptop to right click you just hold the Apple key and click... very simple and effect, i almost prefer it this way anyways. Obviously a 2 button mouse works as normal too.

Could you write a paper?
could you process spread sheets and manage your email?
The reality is it can do everything you do on a day to day basis that never requires a disk drive... and if your going to doing somethign that requires a diskdrive it's probably not out of the question to plug in your portable external one.

i too have an ultra-portable. it is a 12.1" ibm x61

mine is the intel core 2 duo at 2ghz.
it has plenty of external connections. 3 usbs, 1 vga, 1 firewire, 1 sd, 1 pcmia or whatever......
it does not have a cd-drive. but the docking station does have one, which i purchased. the docking station also has a com-port, which is useful for me. and the thing weighs about 3 lbs and has a 6 hr battery life.
and it was $900 shipped after tax. (which includes everything i just mentioned) so save yourself some money and buy what i bought. you will be much happier.

Not a bad laptop either, but still not nearly as thin as the air. Thats almost identically the size of a regular macbook. WHICH you can buy with nearly the exact specs for within 100 bucks of that with a slightly larger screen and a super drive.

It's in the, "I don't need to spend 1800 bux to impress my elitist friends while sipping on my starbucks league."
Seriously though for a 3rd pc which the Air is the EEE PC blows it out of the water. The Air cannot be your main pc, and it cannot also be a serious laptop for anyone that has a business purpose. It's really only for the above club, which my guess is not very large.
I love my EEE. I put XP pro on it, upped it to 2GB ram and a 4GB SD card for some simple storage and it rules. Don't need anything more from a 3rd pc than what the EEE PC provides. Especially for the price.
Also in September Asus is going to be launching their E-Monitor, is more than that name would have you believe. It's a 19- to 21-inch all-in-one PC with built-in TV tuner and a remarkable $499 price tag. (Going after the Imacs)

Lub j00 prez... but really the EEE Pc is totally diffrent class from this. The Air really could replace your main laptop for anyone. All thats missing compared to my macbook is an internal cd/dvd drive and a couple ports i never use. For 90% of laptop users thats pretty true too. Sure some business users need windows.... well you could install it on here. You need a cd frequently.... buy the external drive and use it at home and make a quick disk image with disk utility on here.... takes only a few min usually for a regular cd. I really dont see how it couldnt be a main machine beside its lack of a drive.
You say the price is also too high... go look at sonys comparable ultracompacts (the only real comparable machines available) and they are more expensive than the air as well... with fewer features. Tho the sony is a good machine (almost bought one for teh wife)... it lacks a lot in comparison.

To further expand too... come on the EEE Pc specs are hardly even comparable to the macbook air too.... hardly any storage, much slower, and has a dinky ass screen. Yes for the price its a steal and a ****ing half.... but no comparison at all.

Correct it is a huge issue with HTPC enthusiasts that Cable companies do not allowing tunercards. There is a case in front of the FCC right now concerning this very issue.

It looks nice, but that's about it.
My main issue is that is serves absolutely no purpose.
First of all is the size. Yep, it's freaking tiny, but why? How many people actually carry their laptops in manilla envelopes? None. Everybody puts their laptops in a case of some kind, whether it be a backpack or a briefcase type carrying case, there is always something. For half the price, you could get a waaaaaaaaaay better laptop if you're willing to deal with a couple extra pounds of weight, and who is going to notice the difference of that little bit of weight anyway? Also you can get a much larger screen on a conventional laptop. I don't understand why you would sacrifice features and screen size for just a couple pounds of weight.
Secondly is the missing features. Sure you may not need an optical drive a lot, but when you do need one, it's not there. It's a good thing that the Air is "ultraportable" because your going to have to make your way to a computer that makes sense so you can hijack it's drive. The other thing is that it only comes with one usb port. Sure when you're out being ultraportable this may not be an issue, but lets say you need a break from running around and you just want to use your laptop at home. You hook up your monitor...oh wait you can't do that, oh well. You hook up your mouse and get to work. Let say you have to print something, oops you're out of USB ports, that's ok we'll just unplug the mouse, oh well. Even better, what if you need to print a file stored on a USB key? Plug in the key, transfer the file to the air, unplug the key, plug in the printer, and print the file. What if this is the first time you've had to do this and you don't have the printer drivers installed. You can either unplug the printer and plug in the external drive, or you can search the net for the drivers. Now I know what you're going to say, "It's not meant to replace a desktop/regular laptop, it's ULTRA portable". It doesn't even do that well. Here's a nice feature that Apple thought of, non-replaceable batteries. That's right, you can't change the battery in it. If you run out of ultraportable juice, all you can do is plug it in.
I could go on longer, but I'd rather not.

yeah that's a valid statement
my SLVR does everything a phone SHOULD do and everything i'd ever WANT it to do including web, usb capability, microSD card expansion, and mobile java; all these basic components are included in my very slim phone.
all the basic components such as usable expandability (more than one USB port for example) and an optical drive DO NOT come with this overpriced excuse for a laptop. its a conversation piece and a "look at me" piece. that is it.

whats funny here is that my motorola has been incredible. i got the SLVR L7 and have had ZERO problems with it. i've even flashed it, expanded it, modded it. thrown pirated software at it. written my own seems for part of it. and its even been slammed shut in the hood of the mx6 and tossed around the engine bay a bit while driving without a single failure. i've had it for over 2 years now...i think its close to 3 if not more....and it still holds a charge with regular use for about 3 days.

what i was getting at is that Slim is way we are going and apple proved they are getting there first. For the average user an Air gives you light stylish laptop... arguing that it doesn't have enough USB ports or a cd/dvd drive is ignoring the design of hte laptop. Apple's marketing team spends alot of money on research among their trendy ads. In the end the average user will never notice it's "limitations" in those aspects.

I never said that they didn't design it that way on purpose. I'm well aware of Apple's style and trendiness first, usability and practicality second design technique. This is why there isn't a single apple product available that I would ever consider buying.
The iPod sucks, the iPhone sucks, their desktop computers suck, and this thing sucks. I haven't ever used a regular apple laptop though, so I can't say anything about them.

Youre an idiot seriously. If you're worried about it not having enough ports or something than its not right for you. Its made for people who need a super light and thin computer to carry when they go places... not someone who is gonna sit around with 100000 things plugged into their computer. You're joking right? Funny how nearly all recording studios now a days use macs, many people in graphic design use mac (tho many are using pcs as well), TONS of film studios edit entirely on macs (check out Final Cut studio... a Very SERIOUS app made by apple... industry standard video editing up to par with Avid, and leaps and bounds ahead of Premier). And not to mention, if you need something that OS X cant offer, you're one restart away from windows if you need as well. (also dont forget Apple had THE FASTEST windows vista laptop on the market last year... read and weap http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,136649-page,3-c,notebooks/article.html)
You tell me you cant get any work done on a mac? Now thats a freaking joke... THINK AGAIN.
You cant deny apples offer a great simplicity to computing, yet very powerful versitility on reliable, well built, pleasing to the eye and to use machines. Thats all there is to it, and why mac users are generally VERY vocal about their opinions about them.

Shifter, we KNOW that it isn't supposed to replace a laptop or desktop, but that's why we don't like it.
The whole concept of "ultraportable" is just stupid. There is no situation that will ever come up where you can't use a regular laptop, but you can use this thing.
Apple, once again, just took an existing product, stripped features, made it a bit more stylish, jacked the price, and is hoping to sell it to the ignorant masses as some innovative dream machine.

Nice. Yeah that thing rapes the macbook air. It's just a tiny bit bigger, but it comes fully featured with all ports/drives, and you can replace the battery (omg). Not only that but even fully decked out with the fastest processor, 4 gigs of ram, a 200 gig hard drive, and everything else, it's still $500 less than the macbook air with only the SSD hard drive option.

ok i could go without an optical drive i suppose.
but 1 USB port is just plain dumb.
first off, the bus carries 2 ports....so u might as well at least squeeze that whole other 1oz onto the laptop for another plug.
but while you're at it, just put 2 more on the direct opposite side of the unit. i mean come on. ur talking USB ports here. if i want to use my wireless mouse with my laptop (which i do) thats it. i'm done. oh but wait....i also have a few databases and utilities that i use stored on my PocketDrive which is....u guessed it....USB. at this point i'm screwed.
and no i don't want to go out and buy an SD card. becasue when i'm in the field, the SD card won't do me any good becausue most computers dont have an SD card reader. thus carrying around a USB pocket drive.
i don't care how much research Apple claims they did when developing this laptop. they ****ed up big time by putting 1 USB port on it. and i can almost guarantee that even though they'll sell a bunch of these to their blindly loyal fanbase (because thats what they are. a fanbase. not a clientèle) they're going to get a whole **** ton of complaints about how they can't do what they want to because there's one stupid USB port.

The concept may be stupid, but droping weight and size to make it easier for people who travel alot is a BIG deal to some. I know going from a old school laptop that weighed alot, to an ibook, then to my macbook thats the lightest ive had so far has made a diffrence traveling. Not everyone wants a huge beast to deal with when they travel.
Sure they stripped features and "jacked the price" but making super compact computers this size isnt easy and is going to cost more. ALL OTHER subcompacts like this are aroudn teh same price point.

I disagree Highly.
When I work in the evening on my own business I deal with a lot of your "average" users and I hate to say it but they would be ****ing lost with the AIR. The AIR is definitely not for the normal user or average user.
It is a third or second PC for someone of professional status who needs something light and portable. Like for example me, I'd love to have it and use the **** out of it if it wasn't 1800 dollars. I really think the price is what is going to kill them. Then again maybe not with your trendy starbucks user.
Now I know people know I am not a "Mac" fan but I'll give credit where credit is due and their Macbook pro's are very nice machines. Their OS is great. Hell this AIR is a great idea. But the price and lack of a couple more USB ports or even A VGA out is not something that even makes sense for any type of professional. In todays current world if your an IT professional or any professional in the white color business sector a Mac simply will not work for you. You need to be able to quickly locate software, drivers, comply with policys, hook to a projector for presentations, grab a gigabit Ethernet connection to transfer files, burn a CD for a customer, and etc.
I'd love to see M$ take a hit on there OS and office suite. Love to see Unix and Linux nab up more of the business sector, but it simply will not happen anytime soon. MAC is going the wrong way, and well Linux is getting better but they have a ways to go before it can become mainstream. The really need to work on their installers for software. It needs to be a simple double click to install ANY program, after that happen I truly believe Linux will and can dominate the market.

Youre definately right there, Mac OS X is definately aiming towards a personal computing market more than anything lately. Sure it is very powerful and has a great unix base... but it simply cant compete with windows for a business market like you said. Apple has made the right step by finally switching over to "better" processors and thus allowing windows to easily run natively for more compatibility. Also itd be great for linux to take over, but thats a long ways off as well.

Why spend **** load of money on something that has no more purpose then a PC? I'll still never buy a MAC, unless I get one for free. Spoon is right, I have four USB ports on my laptops and sometime I'm running out of port when I need to use the mouse, print, importing pictures on the camera at once as well. It's a hassle to do this and unplug that.
Youre an idiot seriously. If you're worried about it not having enough ports or something than its not right for you. Its made for people who need a super light and thin computer to carry when they go places... not someone who is gonna sit around with 100000 things plugged into their computer. Thats what you buy a desktop for, or even better yet buy a macbook or macbook pro for the same or lesser cost and get all the features taht are "missing" to make it so incredibly thin.
Wow you called me an idiot because I think it's retarded to have one USB port? I'm a computer programmer/graphic designer and I use my laptop everywhere. If I sit at a lunch table and using my usb mouse to do photoshop then I have to import picture from my camera. Wow, now I have to unplug my mouse. It's not 100000 things I need to plug in the laptop, just only two and I can't even do it. I think that's just not convenience. Regardless how thin the laptop is, I think a wise person would put in a very secure case. I don't think anyone would want to break a $999 laptop that great. Now regardless if it's 6 lbs laptops or 3 ounce, you still going to carry in a case.
Also, I was in Graphic Designing for two years, and yes they were using Macintoshs, which I always bring my laptop with me to get my works done.
I do admit though it's a very nice machine and great idea, but if you're a normal user, why not just buy a small Intel Celeron labtop for $400, surf the web, browse myspace, and call it a day?

So when Prez says exactly the same things all of the rest of us said a thousand times, only he mixes in a bunch of nice comments about other Apple products, suddenly you agree?
Do you not realize he said the Air is stupid and useless? That's what we've all been saying all along.
Sure the concept of a lighter laptop is nice, but not at the expense of tons of useful and necessary features.
Personally if they stopped making laptops lighter and thinner today, I would be perfectly fine with that. How big of a deal is it really? Why do laptops needs to be a half inch thick? Can you really not carry 5 pounds? I'd rather have a laptop that is a few inches thick and weighs 5+ pounds that has a nice sized screen, is fully featured, has a replaceable battery, and a decent keyboard, than a half inch thick featherweight that can't do anything useful without being a pain in the ass, has a tiny screen, and a crappy keyboard where the keys only depress 2 millimeters.

This thread has too many IMHO Bs. This product is a great step forward for laptops... not to mention an impressive ad piece. The PC vs Mac comm. aren't over done yet... while some will argue... injecting new life into them provides a fluid marketing campaign. Showing off their hardward design and well design allows potential consumers to get a personal experiance with apple beyond the mac vs pc ads...
addtionally i still stand by my previous statements that the average user will almost never feel inconvinced by lack of external ports.
if USB ports are really that big of a deal for you... get one of these and quit complaining http://www.networktechinc.com/images/usb-hub-np-4.jpg
they are like $9 at best.. if your plugging that many things into your laptop then this isn't for you and you should realize that before making this purchase. Since my orginal post i still have not opened my disk drive and have only used more than 1 usb port once.. i could have just as easily pulled my mouse out and put the flash drive in and used the touch pad to open the file i needed and then again replaced the flash drive with my mouse. This is not a hardcore normal laptop, it's portable light weight, "trendy", laptop that can meet the damns of many users... but not all.
Also to go with what prez was saying about an exteranl monitor for presentations i agree... it should... and it does..

its my career. go out into the field to work on someone's computer who has lost internet connectivity due to a virus. they also don't have antivirus. so you have your flash drive with you that has AV programs as well as antispy etc.
well after you get there you realize they have windows 98 so your flash drive won't work. well, looks like you need that CD burner don't you.
then you realize they don't have their drivers anymore for their ethernet card. guess thats why their web is down. so now u use either your wifi to get online and find drivers, or use your mobile web (provided by ur company) via USB to get online. well ur mouse is plugged in right now and u need to plug in the mobile modem. on a good end user-friendly laptopl u can just use the next available usb port to plug in the mobile modem.

i'm not debating with you about flash drives but your still arguing about other peoples pc's your working on... i dont' doubt flash drivers are convient for that... you could use a disk but i see the reasoning. i said simplify your life... because when you made that post... it looked as if you were sitting at home doing that on your own pc... think hard about what i just said... if your at home doing all that to your normal perfectly operating pc... do you see where i could say you need to find a way to simpllify your life because obviously your doing it wrong.
for what your doing that makes sense. but this has nothing to do with Air's

a usb won't work when u need powered usb ports.
try again please.
i agree the macbook is a good laptop. if it wasn't for the fact that its got the whole "apple" complex and i'm fairly certain they still have propietary batteries....i would have bought a used one by now.
I hear the apple complex, but they're extremely well made machines. The battery is easily replaced on the macbook too... pops out with the twist of a coin (it has a latch) and even easier to do the ram and hard drive once youve done that. If i remember a new battery is something like 60-80 bucks. But seriously, the likely hood of needing one is slim... mine is 1.5 years old and still gets 4+ hours easily and has 90% capacity or more still. My old ibook was 2.5-3 years old and easily the same when i got rid of it.

i get what ur saying david.
its just funny when i walk into the apple store at villiage point and get attacked by a sales associate for getting hooked into an air. and when he asks what i do i say "i'm in IT tech" he says "will this is perfect for field work.."
thats what sparked all this because thats what happened to me a couple days ago.
i seriously lol'd at him.
and andrew....do u still need to buy specific ram for the macbook? or can i get the 5 dollar sticks off tigerdirect?

exactly. thats why i said 99% of IT professionals are not going to give the air a second look. even the macbook (although more now since it can run windows) purely becasue it doesnt have the expandablility of a ms laptop.
ever try upgrading the ram in a macbook?
Lolz yes i just upgraded my ram last week.... took 5 minuets literally. MUCH quicker than any pc laptop could dream. Dont believe me? check this out: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303721 Also dont even get me started on the hard drive... literally less time to have it out...
I hear ya with IT profs. it would not make since to run a mac, plain and simple thats just how the job is.

Nope generic ram will work fine... just as long as its the right type of course. My 2 gigs i run cost me like 15 bucks.
Yeah the apple store is rediculous now, they're required to come up and "greet" you. Annoying.

well given this recent info (and no the RAM and HD replacement in this laptop took like 30 second each. compaq makes things easy.) i may grab a macbook eventually then.
it'd be nice to know my way around one better.
how much ram can be recognized? cuz i'll be running some virtual PC's more than likely and need at least 3gb of ram. more if possible (why i have a linux partition on this one)

3.3gb is the max i hear, tho some people have hacked 4gb to work somehow... Ill look into that here soon cause im gonna max my machine out since im going to be doing some heavy photo editing this summer. All you need is VM ware to run windows/linux/unix or any other system ontop of Mac OSX, and its uber cheap (or just dl it), and real quick. however why bother when you can super easily install and dual/triple/quad boot them all.
If you wanna check my macbook out sometime, lmk... i take it with me everywhere.

ACTUALLY too, if you're serious i may get rid of my macbook towards this summer... depending. But that depends on some things...

oh i'd get a new one. i'm a warranty kind of guy.
but to be honest i'm more likely to buy a ms laptop still. and just run OSx on a virtual pc

i just read everything and dont' feel like going back to find the quote form george about this not being an IT person computer..
i think we all agree on that.. but seriously if everyone was an IT person there would be no IT people. IT people make up a very small percentage of the pc users..
so i'm sure apple could careless what they think about it in their perfession.. thats not their market... just like express doesnt' care what fat people think of their clothing.

Okay, reading 6 pages of this thread and there are good things about the Air. But two things that Shifter kept emphasizing is it's for normal user, and it's light. Who in here is not strong enough to carry a 5.5 lbs laptop? Is it not movable? Also can normal user buy a normal cheap as computer? Wouldn't that be 10x cheaper?
I personally think that this laptop is not practical but that's my opinion. People might buy it because it looks cool, maybe like the ipod.

I just read your link, well it makes sense that they're aiming for people in fashion designs. Since I only see Mac at designing companies.
I can't argue with this quote either. I disagreed but I guess people in designing love the look.
Fashion isn't about gigahertz and feature sets. It's about design, elegance, and lifestyle -- said another way, it's about focusing on a few, essential and beautiful things, and leaving everything else out.

Basically the Air does everything a normal computer can, it's just a pain in the ass.
Once you're "set up" sure it's just a normal laptop, but getting to that point is a pain in the ass. EVERYTHING requires an external, not-included device or some kind of adapter. Also, not allowing users to replace the battery themselves seems like an absolutely glaring problem, and I can't believe it's being sold like that.

My sub-compact EEE battery unlatches with the release of two clips, no tools.
It's part of apple not sub compacts. :woot:
However I agree with the way apple did it. How many times do you need to change your battery? Once every two years maybe, and thats if you ever do. Most people throw the whole laptop away before they buy a battery.

Yeh, i hear that. Im not sure why apple did it considering all their other laptops easily come out as well. But really the likely hood of needing to replace it anytime in the near future is unlikely... itll be out dated before it needs to be.
