there is a long story to this so ill try to keep it short. My friend worked for unl housing and had a computer where he worked. While he wasnt working one day a housing person found the computer and took it and turned it into the police. It has some decent hardware encryption pieces on it and the housing guy and the police are both stumped at this point. They called him up this morning and asked him to pick it up, but instead they wanted him to sign some consent forms and **** and they wanted him to boot it up for them so they could search it. He told them to **** off.
I know they can get a warrant to search it, and I'm sure someone somewhere could crack the encryption, tho pry not in this state.
Will they search his house if/when they get into it?

They took it cause he wasnt supposed to leave personal possessions there, and it had a rather large wireless adapter on it. They thought he was running an access point with it, but it was only plugged into power.

not that, just LOTS of media, several hundred DVDs+2TB stored.
its a desktop so i dunno how a magnet would work, dont you have to have a big ****ing magnet to **** with a hard drive?

um...all it takes is a magnet the size of one of your 6.5" speakers and an open case.
you'll lose the media forever with that method though.

yes there are people in nebraska who can decrypt it. still not seeing why the police took it. and are still holding it. if all he was using it for was power. just have him show how he uses it. unless like said before there is something worse going on.

There are guide lines to holding personal property. Consult attorney and sue em up.

well it is "under investigation" cause they think he was doing something illegal, but they cant prove it so they are pissed. They wont even let him see it at this point.

yeah I would consult a lawyer, I think UNL has some legal advisors up on the third floor of the union

At this point he is kicked out of UNL, no good. Maybe I can go consult them since that computer does have a few of my parts in it.

well, that is as long as they dont get into the encryption. They tried to tell him that they wanted him to boot it up so he could get the MAC address off of it, he said ok, but then they wanted him to sign some **** and he said no.
I think its funny that my name was brought up to him cause I got caught for the same ****, I didnt have hardware encryption but he couldnt boot into my windows at all, he had to use a startup disc to even view the drive, and he saw what was on it. I went into his office as he was looking at it and told him I wanted my **** back and the little pussy handed it right over, I still got fired over the materials on it even tho the cops were never involved. I sat with judicial affairs for several hours saying I didnt do anything wrong before they decided to "agree to disagree."
This time the guy took it straight to the cops.

theres a term for this i just can't think of it... you wont' get it back without someone who knows more about the law... fat chance sueing the city over this... get a lawyer... get your laptop back.. wait too long and if they find a way in.... i assume the media you have on your computer isn't legit, so... between the fine you will pay for the illegal files which you will lose... it might be worth calling a lawyer tomorrow morning.

mac address on the laptop? they dont log that **** anyways?
JesterMX6
30th January 2008, 06:19 PM
yes. they'd want the mac address so they can remove it from the approved newtork user list on campus.
David
30th January 2008, 06:21 PM
that list is only good for 30 days i thought.

Cause changing hard drives would have been real easy while the computer was in police custody, good call on that one.

NOT 4 months after.
