View Full Version : GTO's

I was driving home in the escort the other night and a newer GTO was behind me... The weird thing is i was in my escort and had zero level of respect for this car that i knew had a 400hp LS2 under the hood... now that i look back at it... what a disapppointment. they dont' loko fast, not even a lil and i know there not... I feel really bad for the LS2 inside and even the name plate :(

I disagree. If I was single and had a lot of miles to cover, I'd buy one in a heartbeat. They're an excellent value used.

David
18th January 2008, 08:57 AM
because they are cheap as $hit.

They would make a cool daily, but that is about as far as that goes. GM failed with that car.

David

Part of me wants to get my hands on a black one and teach it some new tricks... it's like feeling bad for a kid on the street and wanting to take em' under your wing and give em a chance..

I've always wanted to build one too, but they are worse than Fbodys since you gotta spend $4000 or so for traction that won't break to start with LOL. You can shave a decent amount of weight off of them if need be...

I will never ***** about the feel of those seats. Too bad they take 10 years to motorize forward in order to crawl into the back seat. it doesn't help that the huge seat bolsters keep the back from folding completely forward to make more room when getting in.

I could ***** about those cars for a very long time actually. There are endless little things that really **** you off when driving the car. I could never own one. Thats too bad, because I really wanted to buy a GTO back when they first came out.

Hardly. I hopped into those cars liking them. I got out hating them. Actually, driving over 5 GTOs is what gained my hate.

They would be a great daily if there wasn't a laundry list of stupid **** that bothers me about the car.

I drove an auto and was not impressed at all. I raced a 6-speed with the blue camaro and was extremely unimpressed. Both were ls2 cars.

Cobra Commander
18th January 2008, 03:49 PM
Ya, the first one I drove was a blue with blue seats LS1 car. That thing was SLOOOOOW. I remember hopping back in my '03 GT that day and it actually felt "fast" in comparison. That isn't saying much.

I really want to say yes, but there is soooo many other factors that really put 2nd thoughts in your head. If I were to judge a car by it's seating alone, then the GTO is top notch all around! !!

I test drove one at a dealership in Fremont and I liked it a lot. The best part was seeing the salesman's head snap back when he told me to get into it. It happened 3 times.

GTO's are awesome cars. Australia doesn't give two shits about weight, so they load them decently. Put one around some cones and see how it performs then. THey are made for the long haul with luxury + performance. The best thing for a GTO is leave it stock... maybe exhaust if you want it to sound cool. That's as far as anyone should go. The drivetrain is a chain reaction, as Josh said. Check out BMR's site.. it's disgusting what they take to run drag race.

all in all, I'd ****ing LOVE one. talk about the perfect daily. even more so, I'd like it's cadillac counterpart, the CTS-V.. OOOhhhh ****ing drool

Dude... stop right there. you must not have gotten the memo back in 2000 that the ford/chevy bullshit war is over. k thx bye... and this coming from the guy with an OMG 3.8 camaro. Like I said, on the highway...maybe I could see getting close to 30.

There is no way in hell an LS1 gets 30MPG or anywhere near that around town.

Maybe it's possible for it to get upper 20s when you are driving specifically with the intent of getting the best possible fuel economy, but everything I've been reading suggests that most LS1 drivers are getting 17-20 MPG in town.

Cobra Commander
22nd January 2008, 12:53 PM
Skip Shift option *****!!!

But yes, it is known that LS1 F-Bodies, C5s, etc can pull off close to 30mpg if you drive like a normal human being. ****, even my dad's GT will pull off 27mpg these days I guess, and that is lacking the extra overdrive in the T-56 that LS1's have.

Skipping shifts, accelerating ungodly slow, never raising the RPMs, coasting up to stoplights and hardly ever braking, not using your AC, and never exceeding 50 MPH can hardly be considered driving normally. These are the things it would take to get an LS1 to get 30MPG in town, and even then I can't see it happening unless you have a very straight drive to work with hardly any stops and you have a perfectly tuned motor.

Who drives an LS1 car like that anyway?

Basically what I'm saying is this : It's attainable, just completely unrealistic. That's like saying your Z06 is a 10 second car because one guy managed to do it.

My Civic gets 30 MPG in town driving normally. I could probably get 40+ MPG if I really really tried, but I don't go around saying my car gets 40 MPG

rickyvtec
22nd January 2008, 03:28 PM
who ever said this 30mpg was in-town mileage? the general assumption of fuel mileage is always highway figures.

David

who ever said this 30mpg was in-town mileage? the general assumption of fuel mileage is always highway figures.

btw i get between 8-18mpg in town depending on my driving habits. as you can see i'm very consistant.

IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO GET 30MPG INTOWN WITH AN LS1 CAR. If it were possible... it would be sold that way.

spoonraker
22nd January 2008, 04:18 PM
I assumed we were talking about in-town or at least mixed driving because people talking about "driving normally", skipping gears, things you don't need to do while cruising on the highway. Also my second reply was "On the highway maybe, but in town......" and people kept debating so I assumed.

I could easily see an LS1 getting mid to upper 20s MPG on the highway, maybe low 30s if it was well tuned and the wind was helping or something like that.
