Actually we are quite unintelligent as a nation.
I haven't looked into it for awhile, but last I saw the average reading level in the US was 6th grade. Sad really.

in my geography class this semester, the teach started out with a very interesting slide showing statistics of young americans and their geographical knowledge...some 57% i believe couldnt locate new york on a map

Everybody forgets most of what they learn in school if they never use it. People are always trying to prove how stupid Americans are and I don't really know why, we're not any different than the rest of the world. Hell just two years ago I could do derivatives and integrals in my head, now that my girlfriend is in the same class she expects me to remember it all and most of the time I can't help here.
