Where to start..... It's an old school 2.5 short block. Stock crank and rods, JE 8V pistons. O-ring'd. The cylinder head is from a 16V DOHC 2.4/2.0L (Neon)External oil drains and feed. I ported it and installed +1mm valves. Stock 2.0L cams now but plan on getting bigger once all the bugs are worked out. I fabricated the intake manifold and exhaust manifold. 3 1/2" DP to 3" exhaust. 4.7l throttle body. It has an SC61 turbo. ALKYCONTROL alcohol injection with an M10 & M15 nozzle. It was internally wastegated but I just fabricated an external for better control of boost. I replaced the manual trans with an auto with a MVB and good lock up converter. Installed a Haltech E8. I am currently in the process of tuning/getting the set up right. I just switched from a dizzy to DIS. Hope to have it all ready by spring.
There are times I want to get it painted and other times I just want to leave it because it really looks bad.

TD...FTMFW

I will get Scott to get some pictures and get them posted.

Chad, tell me about the tranny. Where did you get a new torque converter from and how much? Any other mods done to it (I assume so but w/e)?

The trans has turbo or V6 clutch packs so it holds more clutches. All the mods done from trans section you can find on turbododge. Manual VB, With some of my own twists. OBX carrier (works great) The converter is a sore subject:(
I bought a USED 4000 stall LOCKUP converter from a guy on TD. I installed it and to works great stall wise but the lockup is ****ed. The only way I wanted to run such a loose converter was to be able to lock it up. So I have to send that converter back to Pat's Performance and have it redone. So right now I have a stock lock up converter in it. It made 3 or 4 dyno runs at low boost 290ishWHP and it allready is noisy:(
We will see how long it lasts at high boost ???whp.

86Shelby
25th January 2008, 03:44 PM
Oh come on Mr. I live on the edge. Don't push it till you get the converter back. Do you really want to tear it down again because the stock unit puked crap throughout the trans? That's just the Safety Sally in me speaking up.

25th January 2008, 06:03 PM
What fun would that be mother goose-- err. mother grosse:lol: If I didnt spend all my spare time working on the Shelby what would I do with my time. The problem is I am too cheap to send that converter in. It's been setting on my bench for months.

So I was doing some tuning/fixing(crank trigger) and I thought the motor acuired a rod knock. I have wanted to put some good rods in it so I ordered a set. Then I checked the bearings and they were all ok. WTF. The motor is coming out so I can fix my external oil drains that leak and check things out. I'm thinking that the converter finally crapped out. I took some good advise and finally sent my converter in.
Hopefully in a week or two I will be back on the dyno with big enough injectors, a converter that works and locks up, crank trigger that wont miss at high RPM. God I love cars.

STOK5OH

Will it reliably hook?

4sfed
30th January 2008, 07:27 AM
We will find out. There are alot of TD's out there that run in the 10's.(with less power and lighter) My EMS has a decent boost control vs: road speed. The Auto will be way better than the manual that I had in it before.

4sfed
30th January 2008, 08:18 AM
I should also say that I do not plan on drag racing it. Maybe some SR but I mainly built it because I love the car and wanted something different than a normal 8V TD.

Motor's apart. Rods are on the way. New set of rings. Found out that flex plate was broken all the way around crank flange. Sent one out to be cryo-treated. New Hall effect crank trigger just came in and hopefully converter will be back by the time I get this all put back together. Every thing looked good inside. I decided to try conventional rings instead of the total seals. So the block is at Spanel's getting a quick hone.

I have no pictures, I could take some. It's an 84 that I tubbed a few years back before I bought my sprint car. It has a Chris Alston's 4 link with a 12 bolt. Double adjustable AFCO shocks.

I also have a 85 cutlass that I drag raced for a couple of years that is in street trim that ran consistant 10.90's with a BB Olds. That car may be coming out soon with a different power plant.

The tubbed car is for sale.

UPDATE: Got the new rods. Got the block back finally. The quick hone and new rings turned out to be a 3 week deal. Ring took forever to get here and I ended up telling Spanel there was no rush because he was really busy trying to get all the circle burner stuff done for guys sence racing season is very near. I re-did the external oil drains so they will not leak anymore. I got a hall effect crank trigger instead of the VR type I had before so hopefully that will cure my sensor issues at higher rpm. My good converter is hopefully on its way back. I got another LS1:ls1kingxk8: air pump that I can use for evac. I decided to not cryo my new flexplate. If this one breaks I will get an SFI one for a 2.4.

Hope to get motor built and in this weekend.

Sence I now had DIS I made an adapter with a -8an fitting and put it where the distributor was. I had TMCO make a nice stainless tank with -8an fittings. I use the LS1 air pump and suck through the tank to the fitting on the motor.

The setup I had before was the same minus the tank. I was pulling right into the pump and it sucked oil into the pump and fried it. Wischman was nice enough to give me his old pump so I thought I would try it again.

So it runs. The hall effect crank trigger works WAY better than the VR trigger. I'm not too sure about the :ls1kingxk8: AIR/Vacuum pump it gets hot and blows the fuse. It is not made to run all the time so I may have the Haltech only turn it on under boost? I need to figure out my TCC and then I can dyno/tune it. Busy time right now so this may not happen for a couple of weeks.

excuse my noobness but whats the benefit of a vaccume pump.

Oh and meth ftw im prolly gonna need my jug filled in a few months

4sfed
27th March 2008, 04:09 PM
A vacuum pump will pull a vacuum on the crank case and will help seal the rings as they will not have pressure on the back side of them. A turbo application really benefits. Keeps oil cleaner longer w/less blow by.

We have methanol. The price just went through the roof. 50$ a barrell more. They say it will come back down in april so we will see. If ot comes down we will not have to raise the price per gallon otherwise it will be more.

DSMMIKE
27th March 2008, 10:17 PM
**** it better come down lol. i still have a fair amout left over from last season and well its gonna be a wile now untill i will be racing the dsm anyway (****ing rings) that vaccume pump thing sounds like a good idea though i may have to look into it. BTW how much did spanel charge to hone your block cuz im gonna be doing a bottom end rebuild here in the next month or so. Im also gonna need to have part of the rod the wrist pins go into bored out from like 20mm to 21mm and apparently carquest wants like 200 bones cuz they have to send it out wtf

Honing a 4 cylinder is like $45. I am not sure what he would charge for resizing the small end of the rods. IMO if you are tearing the whole motor down you should BORE the block and get new pistons. That way the piston to wall clearance is all good.
