I want to here this straight 6 open up for the hell of it! I don't really want to do aftermarket catback yet (money, and long commute home), so i figure if i could have it loud when i want to that'll serve me just as well!

Any good place to check out to have this done for me? How much and where should i look for a good cutout?

Your I6 will sound better than 99% of the V8s around here anyways :)

Just get a regular ol' manual cutout from summit and have it welded in so you can try it out. Then later if you're still wanting to open it up really often and get annoyed with having to reach underneath, get a electric style one since they just bolt on to the exsisting one.

Whatever you do, get one of these (http://www.needswings.com/ProductDetails.aspx?productID=377) so you wont look like this jackass.

Mine has lasted 2 years so far and works like a charm.

Yeah, those are a lot of fun to mess around with people, and they're just cool. But sometimes a waste of money if you're barely ever going to open it... I still want one though.

Awesome! Thanks, that's a pretty good price for an electric one. I have a feeling i'll be opening and closing it a lot, i'd rather at least have a cable instead of having to bolt it up everytime.

Is that 116$ for everything i need?

I like to open it to make people fear the neon. It never works:(

Yeah it looks like a lot of fun to play with :). What i'm wondering, is down the road doing race pipes from the headers into a cutout/to stock exhaust wouldn't be such a bad compromise...

Any good shops that would do this? How much to install do you think?

Is that 116$ plus finding the cutoff pipe for the exhaust?

You'll have to buy a cheap cutout, they're like 20-30 bucks if I remember. And then buy that electric cutout separately. The electric cutout plate bolts on to the exhaust cutout itself. Whatever you do don't get a cable operated one, they are typically **** from my experience.

I see. The cable one seemed to be the best alternative (semi remote and cheap), but if they are worthless than i won't bother.

Also, would i install the cutout right off the headers (before the ypipe and cats)?

I would, yeah. That's always been my favorite setup, cutout after the downpipe, with a stock catback. That's what my car will have :)

What cable one were you looking at? I'm just basing my opinion off of one I've had before, and it was crap. Others could be better. But overall you'll definately be most happy with an electric one.

116 is just for the electric motor and plate along with the switch. You can get a cheap cutout here (http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=SUM%2D670136&N=700+%2D101834+115&autoview=sku) or any like it. Then slap on the electronic plate and you are good to go. Wiring for it is pretty straight forward and I can help if you need it.

Sweet, so an electric cutout should run me total around 150$ plus install. Yeah wiring seems pretty simple, I'd have fun finding a clever place for it the switch.. :cool1:

Premade catbacks = complete waste of money IMO.

And that's the exact cutout I had before I got the cheap normal one previously posted, that one is cast iron aka pain in the ass to weld in. Beside the fact that it royally is a piece of ****.. haha.

Biggest thing will be taking it to an exhaust shop to get it welded in.
And if you didnt know already, the plate will leak a tad when closed. That is normal of any cutout because the exhaust just kills the gasket. I put the copper RTV around there every 3 months or so to keep it sealed better.

I was wondering about that. I wouldn't mind replacing the gasket if it seals up well. Do you notice the leak at all when closed?

srt-4_uk

There is no gasket in there to replace. It is a seal on the seat of the disc that butts up against the pipe. After the RTV, there is no sound of the leak for about a week. Then it comes back when it is all burned off. I will try to explain it better with a pic.

That leak is the reason I originally said you might just want to leave it manual style for a while before getting an electric. Manual ones won't leak ever, and if they do, a couple dollar gasket is all you need. It can be a pita sometimes to keep electric ones from leaking... some have better luck than others.

I personally like dougs mr muffler on like 35th and cornhusker for that kinda exhaust work, he's easy to work with on emmisions illegal stuff paying in cash.

Edit: To picture what SRT is saying, just picture a throttle body and picture it's sealing capabilities, that's how the electric one works/seals.

Exactly. I live with the leak to have the convenience of opening it from in the car and not looking like alley on his back at the dyno.

I see what you're saying...

Humm.. still have to think about it i guess. I probably won't see any performance gains due to loss in back pressure. And if i would do it, it'd only be worth it if it were easy to switch for a little fun making loud noises, but then it sounds like the more convenient way (electric) seems to be the most hassle (and most expensive).

Maybe i'll be better off saving the 150$ and use it to mod the exhaust now (cat delete, test pipe or something).

Any opinions? Open exhaust would be pretty loud and raspy, which would be fun... :cool1:

If I were you i'd just get an electric one, you won't regret it. You're not going to lose any performance because of loss of backpressure, that's pretty much a urban myth, especially with a high wrapping I6. It might leak a tiny bit when it's closed, but it's usually not noticeable. I know in Ryans old 300ZX the electric cutout was fun as hell, and if it does start leaking at idle a tiny bit, you can either fix it with RTV, or crack it open a bit for some loudness.

Ryan IMO the electric cutout is a serious waste of money. Just buy yourself a manual cutout b/c if your anything like the rest of the people i know with cutouts you will just leave it open all the time anyways. Then when you drive home, lay your ass on the ground for 30 seconds and bolt the plate back up and save yourself $100+

btw as far as a good exhaust shop, i have always heard good things about Pro Muffler on west O street. I took the STi there to get a cutout installed and we got it up on the lift to find out a 3 inch cutout was to small to fit my downpipe. No problems he just commented on how nice my exhaust was and bs'ed for awhile. I definitely would go back.

They definately seem like a waste of money, but you can't really judge it till you get to play with one, they are a lot of fun.

ya i have seen them in action and they are decent, definitely not something i would justify my money on though.

I have also heard of multiple people having issues with theirs burning up motors and just breaking from the exhaust heat.

since you need to get a plain old cutout anyway. just get one of those for now. after using it for a bit then decide if you'd benefit from an electric cap

I think it sounds good anyways... the guy who rode around with me yesterday wants a cutout on his car now hahahah (he has a 2000 Z28 as well, red, was out at sams a few times during the summer)

I would need a new Y-Pipe that is not catted. I don't even know where you can get one that fits up to stock manifolds... all the non catted Ypipes (ORY) fit up to headers. So I'd need headers and a new y-pipe, which is about 400-500 dollars right there.
