About 3 months ago, I bought a set of drag bags from a guy in KC. I paid for it with paypal, but I sent money as a gift so he wouldn't have to pay the fees. I still haven't received them, and he won't answer my phone calls, or return them. I've left him multiple messages. Short if driving down there, what are my options as far as either getting my money back, or getting what I paid for. If I call the police down there, will they do anything?

First mistake was sending the money as a gift. Good luck...

is your paypal connected to a credit card rather than a bank card? if you are lucky enough to have it connected to the credit card you can contact them and have them do a chargeback and pull the money from him. You can also file with the IC3 ( http://www.ic3.gov/complaint/default.aspx ). Paypal wont help you very much with the gifting thing. But, ill talk to one of the ladies that is on the fire department with me, she works at paypal and i can see what you have for options.

I paid for this with my bank account. Wish I would have switched it to credit card now. I'll do the IC3. And thanks for checking with her. Please let me know what you find out.

will do, ill have to wait for a call, our meeting was tuesday, so unless we get the batteries for the pagers it may be a couple days. the IC3 isnt too hard to do, and even if they dont do a full investigation it'll light a fire under that guys ass to get you your stuff

Look at the bright side of things. You saved him 3% on the money you gave him.
Post on the local and national forums about your experience with him, especially the forum that things were agreed through. You have his name, email and usename. You can get his name out there that he's a crappy and dishonest guy to deal with. Certainly file a police report about stolen goods.
For future reference send it as good & services. If the seller will not budge on the selling price for paypal fees it's real easy to factor them into the sales price, much like sales tax.
If you have a 3% charge; multiply your total by 1.031. When it arrives at the other end after feepal has taken thier cut you will be within pennies of the agreed upon amount and it will be in the seller's favor so they can't *****.
$500.00 x 1.031 = $515.50 which is what you actually pay. 515.50 x .97(feepal's 3% cut is being taken out) = 500.035 The seller gets $500.03 on the low end. Think of that extra little bit as insurance if the seller is a little swindly *****.

Did a Google search of him, and it looks like he did the same thing in 2008. He was in KCCGP and on ls1gto....might have some luck tracking him down.
Thanks for the advice guys.

If I go after Verizon, they should be able to print of my text message conversations with this guy, right?

Might need subpoena'd to get the actual conversation. You might be able to get the phone numbers the conversation was between though. Not that that would do you any good.

I've already got his phone number though...and the other number would be mine. I don't know why I'd need a subpoena to get my own conversation.

Phone companies are weird. I assume they will see it as an invasion of the other contacts privacy as well. Hence the need for a subpoena. But I would give Verizon a call and see what can be done.

She says you can make dispute with your bank about it. You can also call paypal and report it to their disputes dept.
The bank if your best bet, reporting it as an unauthorized transaction. The dispute agent may not give a ****.

Like stated before, since it was a gift pay pal will tell u to get lost. Your best bet is to go through your card company and dispute the charge and hope for the best. Otherwise ***** the **** out of forums he's on and see if something comes of it

He made the payment with a bank account.
Nick I'm sure I'll see you later, she said there is more to it and she can explain it better over the phone. Or you can talk to Miller 456, i have his number too. Good news is, you might be able to get your money back.

Ive actually seen guys that have had success by calling paypal and telling them this guy told you to send payment as a gift with intention avoiding paypal fees and in turn avoiding a dispute. They obviously won't like the guy not paying their fees. Its a long shot but try it. Play dumb, call paypal, and tell them you didn't know this was the way this guy scams ppl etc. Its worth a shot.

Company i work for had me put together 60 flame thrower nozzles that will be attached to a trailer that you can pull behind a tractor, I may be able to steal that for a night if you know his address and scorch his yard in about 2 mins. it burns all weeds, vines anything living within 10 inches of the top soil. should do wonders.

One of my very good friends in a manager in the claims dispute department... we talk about this all the time. With the "gift" you are not protected by paypal.
Kinda makes it silly not to pay the extra 3% doesn't it.
