Father - Daughter Talk

A young woman was about to finish her first year of college. Like so many others her age, she considered herself to be a very liberal Democrat, and among other liberal ideals, was very much in
favor of higher taxes to support more government programs, in other words, redistribution of wealth.

She was deeply ashamed that her father was a rather staunch Republican, a feeling she openly expressed. Based on the lectures that she had participated in, and the occasional chat with a
professor, she felt that her father had for years harbored an evil,
selfish desire to keep what he thought should be his.

One day she was challenging her father on his opposition to higher taxes on the rich and the need for more government programs. The self-professed objectivity proclaimed by her professors had to be
the truth and she indicated so to her father. He responded by asking how she was doing in school.

Taken aback, she answered rather haughtily that she had a 4.0 GPA, and let him know that it was tough to maintain, insisting that she was taking a very difficult course load and was constantly studying, which left her no time to go out and party like other people she knew. She didn't even have time for a boyfriend, and didn't really have many college friends because she spent all her time studying.

Her father listened then asked, "How is your friend Audrey doing?" She replied, "Audrey is barely getting by. All she takes are easy classes, she never studies, and she barely has a 2.0 GPA. She is
so popular on campus; college for her is a blast. She's always invited to all the parties, and lots of times she doesn't even show up for classes because she's too hung over."

Her father asked her, "Why don't you go to the Dean's office and ask him to deduct a 1.0 off your GPA and give it to your friend Audrey, who only has a 2.0. That way you will both have a 3.0 GPA
and certainly that would be a fair and equal distribution of GPA.

"The daughter, visibly shocked by her father's suggestion, angrily fired back, "That's a crazy idea. How would that be fair? I've worked really hard for my grades! I've invested a lot of time, and
a lot of hard work. Audrey has done next to nothing toward her degree. She played while I worked my tail off!"

The father slowly smiled, winked and said gently "Welcome to the Republican Party.

some people out there really do need help.
not everyone has the same aptitude.
thats a pretty shitty analogy i think. i dont think you can say GPA and salary are the same.

BossRoss
29th November 2007, 11:25 PM
you're right. my high school gpa gauranteed me a job of 75,000 a year. but yet i passed it up. b/c once i get an associates in the same field i will be making around 125,00/year working for cabela's in their networking dept. up in omaha.

dave
30th November 2007, 12:10 PM
i dont understand if you are agreeing with me or being sarcastic.

your following statements don't seem to strengthen or weaken the analogy of gpa to money.

dave
30th November 2007, 12:15 PM
my problem with the analogy is this:
everyone starts out with a 4.0 and that is the maximum gpa you can ever recieve.

no one starts out with a $1 million salary.
everyone starts out with $0, and they work their way up.
that being said, everyone has a particular aptitude. some people have low aptitude and will only get $15-20k per year.

i dont think i need to say any more, because its obvious that the 2 can not be related as a metric for accomplishment.

MadmaX
30th November 2007, 12:15 PM
yeah.

Sometimes life is fair(someone sacrifices and works hard and gets a good gpa), sometimes it's not(you're just a genius and everything's easy).

dave
30th November 2007, 12:17 PM
also, a 4.0 in quilt studies isnt the same as a 4.0 in quantum physics.

MadmaX
30th November 2007, 12:19 PM
should the quantum physicist help compensate the quilter once they're out in the real world?

dave
30th November 2007, 12:21 PM
that wont be necessary. by this 'joke' the quilter will be well compensated in the form of their 4.0.

spoonraker
30th November 2007, 12:30 PM
I have a PHD in quilting and I make $2.4mil/year

MadmaX
30th November 2007, 12:35 PM
well you owe it to the physicist that he make a fair wage.

will that be a check or would you like to sign a bank draft.

spoonraker
30th November 2007, 12:48 PM
I will pay him in quilts, as you may suspect I have quite a collection. I made a quilt out of SHOs once, it's uglier than **** but surprisingly warm.

dave
30th November 2007, 07:28 PM
so i think we can all agree this joke is dumb and not applicable.

coop
30th November 2007, 08:24 PM
its completely applicable....cuz now we know how logically thinking republicans are.....ive learned a lot

They are similar in that they both show accomplishment. You dont start out with a 4.0 GPA, before school you have no GPA, the first class you take, if you dont do homework, tests, etc. you will have a GPA of zero. And there is a limit to money like there is GPA, you can only have so much money before it becomes meaningless, thats your 4.0. I will agree that GPA is not always a good representation of how hard someone works given different majors, but given different parts of the world and different economies a dollar amount isnt either. There will always be people with and people without. If I thought rich ppl were gonna share all their **** with me I wouldnt be in college right now. If everyone had that attitude, productivity would suck.

What is important to people determines what they will do. To some people its important to have 24" rims on their '87 celebrity and to others its important to have a good investment portfolio. But to say that the guy with the investment should be paying money to the guy with the 24s is bullshit. Yeah, the smarter people are gonna have more money in the end, maybe someone who doesnt have much money should take a look at the actions of someone that does instead of bitching that someone else has more than they do.

MadmaX
4th December 2007, 04:03 PM
..yeah. well. that's never gonna happen...

anyway, i think the joke itself is actually mis-representative of conservatives in general. It isn't that we all don't want to help the less fortunate, many(statistically, most) of us would rather take it on ourselves, rather than rely on a governmental system that's guaranteed to be inefficient and comparatively ineffective.
