View Full Version : good affordable way to get a posi rear

i hate hate hate that the rear end is open. especially since the 4wd doesnt work for the moment. but aside from that its just annoying as ** when i'm in 2wd and some water is on the ground and i get one wheel spinning because i'm a little heavy off the line.

its a 94 Grand cherokee laredo with the auto and 231 transfer case (2wd, PT4Hi, PT4Lo) if memory serves me correctly it has a D35 rear end but i havent been underneath the thing to verify yet.

i know some people use Lockrite but are they really 800 bucks like i'm finding? i've seen a few others, including this one that arent as expensive:

Don't be silly, you can't make a Lincoln Locker with a Clarke welder. ;)


Isn't there a factory LSD that you could grab and transfer some parts? Or even just swap the axles?

explain the difference. i was under the assumption a LSD has a certain load at which it releases, and a locker is 100% locked all the time.

being as this is a daily an LSD would be ideal, unless a locker won't hurt anything being daily driven.

That's pretty much it. I was just curious which one you were wanting. I like the concept of the Detroit TruTrac, but I don't know if they make them for your axle.

Supposedly some ZJs came with an LSD in the rear, could just find one and swap axles. Or the Aussie locker is a popular choice.

Ratchet locker?

I don't know if they make them for a jeep differential, a friend of mine has one in his '85 chevy k10.

I swapped in an auburn LSD into my open 10 bolt. It was only around $300 and took about 2 hours. I'd take that route. Idk if they make them for Jeeps though.

gears instead of clutches... no worn out parts. :Thumb:

Those lockers are a little harsh, by that I mean they will pop and bang a little just because of their design, but for the money they are the best mod you can make to a 4x4 vehicle.

You will need to "learn" to drive a lunchbox style locker a little bit. They are supposed to be pretty soft with an auto though. I was going to buy two aussies for my Jeep and drive it everyday on the street.

By learn I mean, don't be in the throttle around corners...unless you are trying to get sideways.

ur seeing it all wrong thundy.

all cars are on equal plane. and that plane is: if i buy it, i want it. nothing else really matters. when i "upgrade" i plan to upgrade to somethign with an existing warranty. like a year old car from the auction with the factory warranty still intact. that kind of thing.

what i mean though is as a daily that probably won't see much off road use, is it still worth it to do something that harsh? or should i find a factory lsd and go with that? yes i'm lifting it, but only because i'm of the belief jeep should have added 2" to these vehicles before they ever left the assembly line. if i was building it for an off road rig, i'd be doing a long arm kit, not spacers. i just don't want to install something i regret a month down the road

If you want it to drive as though nothing has changed, put a LSD in it. The biggest thing you will notice is that if you are in a parking lot or rounding a corner and are coasting, when you get back on the throttle it will feel as though the transmission upshifted because it always drives off the inside tire. Along with that, if you let off while cornering, it will feel as though the trans downshifted because it switches to the other set of drive teeth.

I did. Like I said, they'll pop and bang some. They take a little getting used to, but overall, worth it.

I now own said locker and love the **** outta it. I drive it every single day and really don't think it's bad at all. You just have to learn a little bit different way to navigate turns. the only time I even notice it anymore is when I'm at a stop sign turning and have to get going quickly to get out of the way of traffic. It was also pretty much the first time I had ever opened up a rear end and did anything in the way of gears, and I still found the install to be very simple. But they do have a factory lsd option for the d35 as well which, imo, would probably be a better choice if your main concern is snow.
