You do know the rest of us want them too right? They aren't very common and unless you stumble on them they typically bring quite a bit. Mine was actually cheaper as a whole truck than most want for just a 60F.

I think I saw an episode on Extreme 4x4 that you can convert a normal D60 to be a steering axle.

I think it was a Corporate 14 that they did that to. Probably indestructable, but definitely cost prohibitive.

Yeah, that price doesn't seem outrageous, but it depends on what it looks like inside. If the gears are all rusted to ****, it is no more than a housing. Also, you do realize that is a Dual Rear Wheel axle, right? Meaning you will have to swap to single rear wheel hubs, or have those machined, or run H1 wheels.
Get a picture of the gears before you go any farther on the deal.
Martin
slownova
11th February 2011, 12:03 AM
It's just the front end? I don't get why he said dually or am I missing something? He said the gears look ok, I'd have to change the ratio anyway but I'm not sure. That's why I'm second guessing it.
82355
11th February 2011, 01:00 AM
Yeah, a dually front end is different than a single rear wheel front end. The wheel mounting flange is way farther out there.
Think about it. A dually front wheel has to be able to be swapped onto the rear axle of the truck. Otherwise you would have to carry two spares, and you wouldn't be able to rotate tires.

I was thinking rear end. All a 3 series carrier. Does the 4.56 use a carrier for only 4.56? It says 4.10,4.55,4.88 fit 4.10 carrier. What did the factory have?

i didn't mean anyone in this thread necessarily. i just figured he does it out of habit on scr now just because most of the people here don't understand "taller gears" or "lower gears" without having it spelled out.
Hillbilly
14th February 2011, 03:17 PM
What locker are you going with? Save the 4.56s and carrier I might be interested. I only spelled it out cause some people have a hard time with gear ratios. Richmond must make a 4.10 to fit the 4.56 carrier. I know if you look at lockers they have that as a call out. 14 bolts use 4.10 and 4.56 as the split as well.

14th February 2011, 03:27 PM
So is my thinking correct or not? Sorry I didn't really understand your post based off the link you sent.
Hillbilly
14th February 2011, 03:39 PM
OEM gm stuff <4.10 is one carrier and >4.56 is another. I guess buy the link richmond makes a 4.10 that fits the 4.56 carrier. I was just reading the notes at the bottom that list were the split is.
slownova
14th February 2011, 03:42 PM
Yea that's what I thought. It's just a thicker gear to make up for the 3 series carrier? Like I said I haven't messed with this stuff in some time. I was thinking bout doing front/rear air lockers. Maybe detroits? I'm not sure yet totally but if I find myself with a 4.56 and a carrier I'll let you know. Any suggestions?
Hillbilly
14th February 2011, 03:43 PM
Mine is just a lockrite and I am super happy. Detroit rear. I would regear the rear to 4.56s. I guess I don't know your plan but I sure wouldn't degear it.

A Chevrolet Dana 60 uses king pins instead of ball joints.
A Chevrolet Dana 60 has two studs on the inside of the passenger side leaf spring instead of a long u-bolt like a Dana 44 or 10 bolt.

No. Dana 44 front's used in 1973 through 1980ish used ball joints.
The earlier ones that had King Pins were also closed knuckles I believe.
That being said, anything older than 1973 is out of my realm of knowledge.
