if his does have a ported blower and upper and lower pullied, its fast, and if its an 01+ it has 373 gears, they launch good too.

Grills, head lights, taillights, turn signals, cargo lamp, wheels (if stock which this said these were not). In addition to this, the blower case, MAF, and intake tract pieces, and gears. Probably missed something.

I'm pretty sure Brook is referring to actual track times that were run with each vehicle in stock form. I have a stack of 13.5 time slips. The slightly better 13.5's were even on hot laps. It's even run multiple 13.5's on different tracks.
Cobra Commander
15th November 2007, 08:56 AM
That is what I was speaking of. ^^
My only point was that LS1's are considered a very quick out of the box car, so I don't see how anyone can say the Lightning (01-04 at least) isn't all that quick when Bards, for example, has ran within a tenth of CJ's.
Their trap speeds are a different story though. It's kinda hard to throw a brick through the wind and expect it to be aerodynamic.

why are the 99-00 slower? No blower?
Slightly revised lower intake and blower designs. 80mm MAF vs. 90 mm MAF, and obviously different intake tract plumbing corresponding to each. 3.55's vs. 3.73's. Steel driveshaft vs Aluminum driveshaft. That's all the speed stuff.
99-00 had egg crate type grills compared to the charcoal colored horizontal bar grills in the newer ones. 99-00 had standard F-150 corners, head lights, cargo lamp, and taillights, plus on the 99-00 trucks the reverse lights were on the center rib of the taillights where as on the 01+ F-150s the reverse lamps on those were in the top rib of the taillights. The 01+ Lightnings have the nice completely transparent headlight lenses, clear corners, LED third brake light/cargo lamp, clear tails which if switched out like I did require usage of the 01+ red tails that have the top positioned back up light. 99-00's had decent wheels, 01-02 had ugly huge spoke block wheels, 03-04 had FTW wheels. 03-04 had stiffer springs in the back that make the rear end sit higher but give it 400 lbs more payload (800 for the 99-02 and 1200 for the 03-04). 03-04 also have heads that are revised for more spark plug thread engagement.
At some point Goodyear actually changed the tread compound in the tires too but at this point I'm going to guess that there are no Lightnings that still have the stock tires on them and if they do they're old and hard as **** tractionless junk anyway. My truck hooks real good with the tires on the back now. I really wish I would have rotated them before I was there for Americuirse. The current back tires were on the front then.

The transmissions aren't all that bad from what I've heard, but there are cheap little upgrades to them.
The weak link is the rods. Surprise surprise. Oh, and the 01-02ish spark plug threads.

The Lightnings got better than normal pistons so no breaking ring lands which is the first thing to go in an N/A mod motor but they still have crappy rods. I think the rods are the weakest link followed by the trans probably. It's a decent trans but not greatly over built by any means I don't think. You can get into the 11's though with the stock bottom end and trans I'm pretty sure.

Lightning powered Mustangs are ****ing retarded. Not retarded cool, retarded as in really ****ing dumb and any one that builds one should just be smacked in the head.
I still want a sleeper as hell 1st gen Lightning. Make it look mostly stock even with the hood popped. I'm sure the stock intake would be somewhat limiting but some extrude honing and things like that I'm sure would help it out. Build the hell out of a 351W engine and plumb all the nitrous I could find into the underside of the intake so it couldn't be easily seen. Some good heads with any incriminating markings removed and maybe even stock type markings recreated. Some over the top **** like that. Stocking looking engine that makes 700+ HP on the bottle. It'd be sweet. If I were going to build something that was mostly for general fun and straight line I think that would be it.

Ya, it really sucks that those engines are at a stopping point pretty quickly once you start bolting pulleys and exhaust on them. 400whp jumps up there pretty quick. :(

I have had this idea for, let's see, I've had my truck three and a half years, so I'm going to say I've had this idea for 4 years now. If I remember correctly I think most first gens had dual tanks. Run pump gas in one tank with it's own pump, when you were ready to spray flip the switch to turn on the spray which also flips you to the other tank which you have full of race gas and it's own pump. I was originally looking for a 1st gen and had lots of ideas to go with the already expressed ideas but I couldn't find a nice truck for a reasonable amount of money so I went and got a 2nd gen.

Yep. My dad filled his rear tank with 100 octane from that west O U-Stop years back when they still had it. He always thought he was cool when he had two different tanks with two different fuels.

I'd even repaint the tops of whatever fuel injectors I ended up running to make them look like they were still the stock injectors. Maybe it would be possible to stick the guts from a 42 lb injector into the plastic shell of a 24 lb or whatever first gens came with. That'd probably work better than paint.
Damn, if only I had money, the Torino could be done, I could have my GXP swapped Chevette, and my crazy stock looking 1st gen lightning, and some of the oh so many other great ideas I have.

it has a lil bit more oversteer then i remember....
