Cobra Commander

For those of you who missed out on the conversation, we are doing a challenge with Hibs to take two Fox Bodies and build two totally different powerplants under $2,000 (in engine modifications) to see which one produces more power and runs faster. He is running off the theory that 5.0s are the best bang for the buck in the performance world (which undoubtedly has a huge aftermarket). We on the other hand are converting a 6-bolt 4G63 into a RWD application and stuffing it in this 1979 Cobra, formally a 2.3 Turbo car.
Here are some pictures to catch you up on the car. It was picked up in Albion, Ne out in a pasture. The car had been sitting there since 1993. I'm currently freshening up the exterior just to make it a little more presentable. Obviously I'm not finished.

You know, for some reason I just realized your pulling a non-functional turbo 4 banger and putting in a fully functioning 4 banger with a wider/cheaper variety of aftermarket parts. For some reason my mind though you were pulling a 5.0 (even though I know you weren't).
I now love this project. :woot:

On my Daytona, the hatch cylinder is connected to the hatch latch with a rod, like the doors. Should be able to just pop the rod off the cylinder or hatch latch and release it manually.

or if you want brand new ones:
http://www.rx7store.net/product_p/bosch%201600cc.htm
roo
10th May 2010, 06:06 AM
I've found the 1600cc injectors for $75 each new but if we were going to spend that kind of money I would step up to the blue max injectors for better idle.
Being a budget build I'm trying to track down the 150 or 160 lb Crown Vic injectors instead of spending $400 on injectors. I got a part number and found a place that sells that injector part number for $35 each but I need to get confirmation that it's the right injector since they don't give any specifics on their site.

Oh lord... this will never happen. The GTP was single handedly designed by god him self. He also put each car together by hand (no tools at all) and said this shall be the fastest race car in north america. The epicenter will be located in Norfolk Nebraska where one special person will hold true all the ideals and mastery of launching the automatic race transmission and how FWD SC'd GP's will own the road.

Cobra Commander

Lol @ Josh.
The $2,000 is for engine mods I believe. I'm categorizing the K-member as part of the RWD conversion since it will aid in making more room for all of the turbo & exhaust piping.
We really shouldn't have much into the rest of the car. Most everything we are picking up for the suspension is either used or going to be self fabricated. Hell even most of our fuel system will be used items. I'm sure we'll have a complete breakdown of every single modification and price once it is near completion.

Ya we'll have to see what gearing this car requires once the power is put down. I'd like to get it as close to redline through the traps as possible, so we'll obviously need a gear change of some kind eventually.

Unless it is an all out drag car only, I just don't see the point in putting an automatic in a car. I just don't care for them, I prefer driving a manual. I know it will be better for at the strip, but what perchentage of the time will this car be at a drag strip if it does get up and running??? I'd rather the car be at a slight disadvantage for 1% of its use, and enjoyable for the other 99% of its use.

Did my answer come off as the voice of reason for the T5?
Martin
No you didn't and thats why I questioned your choice. Im mainly going by your usual opinions of things. They tend to make sense and be rational. And why the t5?

How about the interior? You aren't really going to throw it all away are you? Clean it up, and put it back in.
Martin
Interior is beyond reusable even if I wanted to. All of the mice ****/****/nest put aside, most of the front half was still ruined by the sunroof seal allowing buckets of water to pour down on the seats, dash, and carpet for countless years. The seat rails were completely rusted.
It's probably going to spend a good time at the track. The cool thing about this setup is that we can keep pushing it further and further after the 5.0 ass kicking is over with. I'd really like to see how fast we can get this 4G63 to go.

As long as the 4G63 actually makes it in there and runs, I'll be content. Just wish it had a T5 instead of TH350.
Martin
Why?
Unless it is an all out drag car only, I just don't see the point in putting an automatic in a car. I just don't care for them, I prefer driving a manual. I know it will be better for at the strip, but what perchentage of the time will this car be at a drag strip if it does get up and running??? I'd rather the car be at a slight disadvantage for 1% of its use, and enjoyable for the other 99% of its use.
Martin
this is EXACTLY what i've been saying for years. spot on.

With slow cars, driving a manual is way more fun, it actually makes the car seem faster. When you're talking fast cars, especially boosted ones, autos are very fun.
Spoken from experience.

I agree 100% and I don't see how people think "fast" autos cars aren't fun.

^^ its called personal preference. i've driven quick auto's before. (i'm talking 12s, 11s. not 14s) and i still prefer manual. maybe i'm partially a control freak. i just like the control you get from a stick shift. or maybe i'm gay because i like the way it feels.

Whatever happened to the turbo clutch... I think it was a TH350 or something like that with a clutch in place of the converter.

Decent. I can definitely understand personal preference, sticks are fun. I don't agree with the control argument though. My auto is under complete control of me, with no "automatic" anything.

yeah the control thing goes along with the preference.
don't get me wrong the ferrari was still fun. i just finished the drive and went "hmm. wish it was a 6spd manual." <3 Lebanon

Some piece of ass 90hp beater - give me a manual!
Something pumping real power - give me a real transmission: automatic.

So in other words, all street legal cars (no matter how fast they are) shouldn't be equipped with an automatic transmission which allows more consistency? I get it. I think?

No throttle stops, just a foot-print gas peddle.
