View Full Version : WL: 1995 Eclipse GSX 'Molly'

Everyone knows the history of this car, it's been ridden like a Clydesdale in a one horse town. I originally bought it to just fix quick and flip, but there's no way I'll end up with a quick job. I have decided to keep it as a intermediate term project car, good chance to learn some new tricks in the import world.
Specs:
1995 GSX
5 speed
112k
Leather interior
Pretty clean overall
Current mods:
6 bolt swapped
16g turbo
HKS cams
Greddy BOV
Large FMIC
Assorted gauges/Blitz turbo timer
3" Turbo back
2GB front bumper
Aftermarket clutch (Centerforce I believe)
Current issues:
Some miss-matched wiring/2g sensors
Possible/likely bent valves
Stock head bolts re-installed, not very trustworthy
Current plan:
Pull the head for new head bolts (ARP) and inspect what all's going on in there. Access the damage from there.
OEM or minor step up valves/guides/seals
Fix up the wiring, order plug and play 6 bolt into 2g harness if it's not too hacked.
Parts ordered so far: ARP headbolts
Immediate plans after the car is running:
190/255lph fuel pump
One or two size bigger injectors
DSMlink
White TE37 reps
Goal: Respectable, clean street car. No straight line performance goals, just want it to be a decent cruiser. Not really planning on making much more power, just want to make it more reliable.
Progress will likely be slow, but consistent. I'll update with lots of pictures accordingly.

Found the ARP headstuds on STM for $89, going to call and cancel my order on the OEM ones I ordered tomorrow. Also found Supertech valve guides at $62 each for intake and exhaust sets. I take it Supertech makes a pretty good product? They also have a pretty good valve stem seal kit on STM. Still shopping and pricing out valves.

Yeah, most Honda guys at least use Supertech and have good things to say about them. Especially for the price.

I had a supertech valve/spring set, and some cam set I dont remember what brand and I take that back it wasnt for my h22 it was for my b16 teggy. anyways with the valve train I had it was supposed to be good for 9k rpm, I would deff recomend supertech. Just do a google search for reveiws

Jason: Get a FPR?? Tard lol
Kyle, a 190 would suit that 16g fine.
Id do some diagnosing before ordering valves. If they are fine, it saves you having to pull the head to replace the Head bolts. You just do them one by one. Then you dont have to buy another HG either lol.
Also, I thought it had 650cc injectors? Those match up about perfect to the 16g also.
Ecmlink v3 and TE 37's ftw.

Highly advise pulling the head and putting some arps in there along with a oem vr4 mls headgasket. You can get the headgasket from Bruce at parts dinosaur for like 49.99. Shoot it with some copper spray and lug on them arps till around 100 ft lbs and you should never have a problem. Also +1 on burntz statement of getting an FPR. If your going to mod the thing you may as well do it correctly from the start. Trust me as I was a broke highschool kid trying to build a car out of my league and ran out of money. If you half ass **** it will not last, ending up costing you more to do it 3-4 times the half ass way than if you just did it correct the first time. Definately dont mind wrenching on dsm's if you ever need any help!
Burntz
21st March 2010, 07:43 PM
the stock headgasket will be fine for whatever that 16g can throw at it, and he's not going to push it to its limits anyways.
He doesn't have to pull the head to put the arps in either, unless they're the stud/nut kind. Just start from the center and replace them one by one in the correct pattern. 100 ft/lbs sounds a bit excessive too, I know oem specs on my supra were 75-80 ft/lbs. Correction, they were 55 ft/lbs lol but thats why every headgasket in a 7m failed. 75 was correct. Id think 90 would be about right.

As soon as I get my DD situation figured out I'll start ordering parts. First on my list is the ARP studs. I've got some time off this week so I'm going to pull the VC off tomorrow, see what I've got and pull the head later this week. I'll update accordingly.

Without any fine tuning, so almost guranteed there was more than enough knock than anyone would prefer to have in a tune. Boost isnt what kills headgaskets or stretch headbolts/studs... Its mainly knock. (in the exception of extremely high boost on large framed turbos)

OK I'm looking for opinions here. I priced out the parts I can get at work since I get a discount on them.
Felpro headbolt set: $32.99 @ 20% discount $26.40
Felpro valve stem seal kit: $28.99 @ 20% discount $23.20
I also found Melling valves, but I can't get them at discount since they have to be vendor ordered.
$8.99 a piece for intake side $72 for the set
$15.99 for exhaust side $128 for the set
Sooo on valves $200 for the set for Melling OEM's.
I talked to Beans, and I think I'm going to run the Felpro head bolts and save the cash there. The less money I spend, the sooner I can get it all back together.

So lets say that in a perfect world (IE: not mine) I pop the VC and everything looks good. Compression test it and it comes up with decent results. I can replace the head bolts one at a time without actually removing the head? Just pull one, replace it with new, torque it down and move on?

Small update, replaced all the vac lines, got all the fuel lines and FPR set up, and replaced all the bad IC couplers with Semi Radiator Hose. I need to pick up a couple more T-bolt clamps to get the IC setup completely done. As it sits, I have a couple more sensors to solder and heat shrink then I'm done. I should be getting to those tonight or tomorrow, and I'll pick up more clamps tomorrow.
Past that it's just about waiting for a used DSMlink v2 or v3 to come along used. I already have the money saved and waiting. Then put the hood/headlights/bumper back on and I'll be ready to roll.

Honestly I'm in no rush to finish it. I just want to do it right.
Nicer .. yes. It'll be quite awhile before I consider that car "nice". As for faster, I guess that'll depend. What are you planning on making powerwise with your setup?

I scan craigslist nation wide, the link forums and tuners every 2-3 nights. No one wants to sell them apart from their ECU packages.
