Bought this a couple days ago, figured I'd make a work log for it. It's a 1987 S10 with a fresh 355 sbc. The motor has an Edelbrock 234 244 .488 .510 lift cam, Holley strip dominator intake, Holley 4160 carb, shorty headers, 2.5" duals dumped behind the cab with some Thrush Turbos. It's mated to a th350 w/ shift kit, trans cooler and Hurst Quarter Stick Shifter. It also has a Competition Engineering 4-Link with 3 way adjustable coilovers. The body is nearly perfect with only a nickel sized hole in the passenger side cab corner. I got a hell of a deal on it by buying it without the wheels he had on it.(it showed up on two steelies, one keystone classic, and some other random wheel)

Here are some pics of when Whody Towing showed up with it:Thumb:

A little update: we were trying to get this running decent and discovered #4 cylinder was weak. Took off the valve cover and there was a broken valve spring. So I took the head in and later found out the heads were assembled incorrectly. So then I had to take the other head in to get fixed. Basically the valves weren't seating and it was prettymuch drinking oil. I have the heads back and they are on the truck and it runs again. Just have to get the Carb dialed in and it will be good to go.

Oh ya and I just ordered a new x pipe with cutouts for it.

Got the xpipe and cutouts put on today, it sounds pretty good. The driveshaft loop screwed everything up because it is right where I wanted the x to go. Also, there was some weird coating on the exhaust pipe that made all of my welds look like dogshit. Doing exhaust on a lowered truck without a lift is a huge PITA!!!!!!!!!!!! That is all

Finally had some time today to get this thing all cleaned up. Took it into work and detailed the inside and washed it. Then I went back home and eraser wheeled all the glue from when I took the moldings off. Then I decided to see what the paint looked like after some wax. It was pretty faded and starting to blister on the hood. Ended up putting 3 coats of NXT on it and it turned out surprisingly good!

This was just after 1 coat

I'm planning on painting the box and bumpers either tomorrow or Tuesday. I've also got some 5% tint coming for it. I'm also planning on putting the "sport" mirrors on it so I don't have these huge chrome ones. I can't decide what I want to do with the grill and headlight bezels. Either get all new chrome ones or paint it all black. idk.

-Auburn LSD :ohnoes:
-Rod ends and jam nuts to make an alternator bracket
-new tranny filter and pan gasket
-fuel cell gas cap (some trickster decided to steal mine)
-sent the starter off to get rebuilt

picked up a parts truck pretty cheap. All it needed was a clutch but I pulled a bunch of stuff I needed off it. The only thing I still need is the rear end. 2.5/5 Speed so if anyone needs anything let me know

Since I'm such a broke ho, I haven't really got much accomplished on this money pit the last couple weeks. Right now I've got the body work on the box, tailgate, and rollpan 99% done and it should be painted either Tuesday or Wednesday. For the last 2 days I've been rolling around with no box on the truck, its pretty rediculous looking  not to mention there is literally NO weight over the rear axle so it spins FOREVER haha. I also figured out why it ran like dogshit down low. I looked up the specs on my intake and it is rated at 4500-7600 rpm, which really does me no good when I shift at 5500. So, eventually I will be picking up an Eddy RPM Air Gap and mate it to a street avenger 670 holley.

For how beat up this thing was, I'm pretty happy with the results

For those who didn't see my other thread, the 4 link took a **** on me. Both pieces of boxed tubing which are welded to the frame and hold the front rod ends cracked. I damn near lost the whole rear end going down the road.

Sooo, tonight I started tearing it all down and getting it ready to rebuild and reinforce. I'm trying to save all the brackets so I took my sweet time with a cutoff wheel to cut the old brackets off the boxed tubing. Right now I've got everything ground smooth and ready to go. I'm doing it all at our shop because that is where our big 240 VAC Lincoln welder is. I'm not taking a chance using a smaller welder. When I'm done, it will be pretty solid.

Well, I got the 4 link all finished up Saturday afternoon. It turned out pretty good. I don't think I will have a problem with it breaking this time.
http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm93/99eldoradoetc/1c684998.jpg

On a side note, I'm pretty sure I broke another valve spring. I can't seem to get it to run above 3k. I thought it just wasn't getting enough fuel after the intake swap, so I went up 2 sizes in jets and that didn't help one bit. So, I've been wanting a nice set of heads for a while so I think this is the perfect time to order some. Tomorrow I will be ordering some Brodix IK 180's with 1.470 dual springs that are good to .575 lift, ARP 134-3601 head bolts, fel-pro gaskets (1206,1003,1404), new plugs and Accel Superstock wires. I'm pretty excited. Hopefully I can get them in this weekend.

Those should be good heads. Going back to the single plane? What is your converter again? How long till you break the axle?

Jesse
6th July 2010, 11:58 AM
I believe it still has a stock torque converter, that is what the previous owner said. A 2500-3000 stall will probably be my next mod, but I am kind of thinking about building a nice 700r4 so I can have OD. I am planning on keeping the dual plane for now. And I believe the rear end should be fine as long as I stay away from slicks.

Oh, and I finally got my heads ordered today. My stupid debit card had a 1k limit on it so it took a while for my bank to change it:pissed:. So now they should be here by Wednesday or Thursday which gives me enough time to get them in for next weekend:woot:. The only thing that I'm worried about is setting the valve lash. I don't have a lot of experience with valvetrain and I don't want to screw it up. Is it the same for all small blocks? Or specific to my heads/cam setup? I might just have one of my dad's friends come over and help if its not easy enough to explain over the internet.

I know when I did it on my old car (Not a small block, but I would assume it'd be similar), I just searched for the clearance that you check in between the valve stems and lifters, IIRC. Then you adjust it untiil you have the right clearance for each valve. You check it with a feeler gauge. There should be a DIY somewhere on an S10 forum.

If it was a mech that would be right but its a hyd. I do the Exhaust Opening Intake Closing method on both. Meaning if the exhaust is opening you adjust the intake and vise versa. I roll the push rod between my fingers until I can just feel a slight drag on the push rod and usually go back and forth to be sure. Then I tighten the nut a 1/4 turn. This usually helps prevent valve float for a bit. On one dirt car I built I actually lash the hyd with a .003 feeler gauge to prevent lifter pump up on the required weak springs. Its easy. Pm me and I will give you my number if you need help.

I know everyone thinks I am a prick, which I am, but strighten out why you did what you did. First a open spacer on a dual plane makes it loose torque and gain horsepower but thats what you had with the single plane. Second That aircleaner is far to short. You need a 14 by 3 at least to get the amount of air into that engine you could use. Pitch the spacer and get a nice 2" drop from speedway and run a real aircleaner. Do I have to come over and help you? Forget the braded line it costs more and isn't any better than push loc.

Ha, its funny that you say that because I already took the spacer off. The aircleaner that is on there is a 14 x 3. Once I get a cowl hood I will put a bigger filter in it. I just don't have the hood clearance right now.

It's a definite possibility. I still can't decide what I want to do for a trans. The TH350 that is in it is fine, but I'm getting about 8mpg and revving it to 3k going 65 down the highway with 3.42 gears. I think I went through 35 gallons of 91 this weekend.

Its has dished pistons, what compression does it have? I would say you could run 89 if you didn't drive like a complete idiot (I have a hard time with that too). Still 200 has less of a 1 2 jump and they came in lots of stuff like montes and things. I would find a cheap driver and worry about converters and rearends.

Haven't really done anything to it besides a new March alternator bracket because I was throwing the belt off at high RPM's with my home-made one. I ran a tank of cheap gas through it this weekend. I don't like it. Going back to 91. Half the time I can't even get it started, and it likes to die at low rpms when going around corners. It could just be Cortland's shitty gas, they are notorious for having water seep into the underground tanks.
I've lived in Cortland for my whole life, minus a year or so after highschool when I moved to Lincoln with a couple buddies. I got in trouble, lost my license, and had to move home:lol:. And yes, I know Roger. My dad has painted numerous tractors for him. He's a little goofy.

When its hotter than 4 mother ****ers you can't run e10 in some vehicles. Try it this fall, it should be better.

I agree Roger is a little goofy. My grandpa and his dad were best friends. They lived 3 miles from my house and used to take me fishing when I was like 8 they were 18. He had the first vehicle I ever heard (or paid attention to) with glass packs. Since he had a twin instead of getting 2 cars there dad went to the ford dealer and told them to order a new truck. I think it was a 85-6 F150 4x4 302 4 speed and they ordered it with a am radio so they could put in a pioneer and it had box speaker behind the seat. Pretty cool when your listening to RATT and rattling pipes at age 8. When they went on dates one of them would drive a Packard they got running in H.S. shop class. If you think he is goofy you should meet Ron he is tighter than bark on a tree.

These motors aren't built to rev to 6500 like LS1's. I don't even like revving it past 5k. A 4k stall would be pointless.

So what let go?

The rings are fried and there is a possibility that the cam went flat. That would explain the backfiring out the carb. I haven't had the ambition to work on it this week so the motor isn't even out yet.

Hillbilly
19th August 2010, 10:10 AM
That motor with the right parts (nothing special) will spin 7200 all day long, mods turn that engine 8900. My bet is it is just the cam and if there is a ring problem its cause the cam ate the pistons. Start looking for a 87 block for a factory roller cam set up. Are you going to try this time or are you happy with weaksuck?

Jesse
19th August 2010, 05:59 PM
I know you are going to be disappointed, but I'm saving up for a nice daily so I'm not going crazy with this rebuild. I was happy with the power it made before. With a stall it should be even more fun.
If the block is screwed up, then yes I will look into a roller setup. If not, I will just throw in another hydraulic cam.

Finally got some work done on the S10 today. Motor and trans are out and separated. Hopefully I can get it all torn down tomorrow so I can get some parts ordered.

-Lunati Voodoo 233/241 .504/.525 Cam w/ lifters
-Redneck Performance 3k stall
-Accel cap and rotor
plus gaskets, rings, maybe bearings, and I'm sure there will be other stuff. I'm also going to paint the block, powerwash everything, and clean up some wiring.

stay away from the 700's if your going to have power, or if you want to spend 2k+ for one to last. i have about 420ish hp thats been infront of TCI's streetfighter for only about a year and a half and 4k miles and its done dealing.

I will find out tomorrow after work. I'm hoping its nothing major, but its getting new rings and a cam for sure. I decided to stick with the th-350. The only reason I was considering a 700-r4 was because of gas mileage. Now that I'm putting a stall in, it probably won't see quite as much daily driving anymore so I'm not too worried about it.
That sucks your trans is smoked, I thought TCI made some pretty good stuff.

yep, i just got a th400 built thats goin in when i do my 4 link/9", so that with 4.10's should be just as shitty on mileage. but hey, well see. im getting 15 now.

how big of tire do you have in back?

drivability with that stall will be fine. just keep a good cooler on it.

Jesse
23rd August 2010, 01:17 AM
Just some 275/60/15 bfg radial t/a's. I plan on going bigger because I'm sure I will have traction issues after the stall. But after some sticky tires, the 10 bolt will be a ticking time bomb. Ugh, its a never ending cycle with this thing.

I would just go 1.5 rockers. 1.6 just a way to get more of what you have. Most of the time they make the same power and 1.5s are easier on cams and valve springs.

Got quite a bit accomplished tonight. Everything is out except the crank and rods/pistons. I'm guessing the retard that built this motor either put the rings in wrong, or went out and beat the **** out of it without breaking it in. Yes, the new one is 233/241 .504/.525 110lsa, which is just slightly shorter duration but a little more lift than the old one.

Ha, it should be TONS better now. I wish I would have done a compression check before I tore it apart. With the rings lined up the way they were, it was probably leaking down like a s.o.b.

So you have short TC bolts but bolted the bellhousing up anyways?

Its easier to mate the tranny to the motor with the converter already in the trans like in the first pic. Then you don't have to wrestle with the tranny to get the splines lined up and the slots on the converter lined up with the input shaft. All you have to do is turn the motor over to get to all the converter bolts. I could be wrong, but it seemed like the most viable option to me.

It has a performer rpm air gap on it now. I was already planning on putting my old single plane back on. When I was back home this weekend and went to take it out of the box, I remembered it had a stripped carb stud, so I started looking at single planes in Jegs. I have it narrowed down to the Team G or The Victor Jr. What would be better? I think I'm done with this 9:1 compression and flat tapped cam nonsense also. What is the highest compression I can safely run on 91 octane?

The HP was still rising all the way to red line, never dropped.
Well, I misread the dyno graph. The torque is still rising all the way to redline, but the hp starts dropping off at around 4500. I shut down at 5500 all three runs. I discovered I had a bent axle on the dyno so it was vibrating like crazy.

Why not just fix the threads? It is easy and mostly cheap. What demon does it have? How good are the springs on the heads? How big is the exhaust?

Eh, I thought about it, just never did it. Its a Holley strip dominator which I figured was a little too big for my application judging by the RPM range (4500-7600.) The carb is a 750 speed demon, vac sec. The springs are 1.47 duals, good to .575 lift. It has shorty headers with 2.5" duals all the way back. I honestly think it is the compression that is killing me. I seem to have all the right parts to make 350+whp, except those shitty pistons. I am kicking myself in the head right now for not doing it when I had the motor all apart last fall.

Did you happen to race a black convertible fox body i think he said on 84th street.

No, wasn't me. It was probably that turd 305 s10 with the bravada grill that's always ricing up O street.
What spring is in the vac sec?
I honestly have no clue. It's straight out of the box. My AFR's were around 13.5 on the dyno.

so whats the issue? Are you bogging? get a spring kit for that vac secondary. I have the stiffest one (black) and i still have to stretch it out on occasion because it comes in a bit too soon. before you worry about your compression, get yoru carb tuned. jets/squirters/springs/carb cams/power valves

The problem is it only put down 275 hp.

Change the spring to at least a plain. Posted via Mobile Device

haha.. boy ooh boy. still i dont see lower compression being the cause of the low hp numbers.

Compression moves the curve up or down but doesn't change the peak. Change the sec spring to AT LEAST a plain. It is air flow related, like a restriction or cam out of time. Start by opening the secondarys sooner since it is at such a low rpm. FYI this has nothing to do with a/f.

You change that spring yet?

I just took it out, and unless BG doesn't mark their springs from the factory, it already has a plain in it. I just got a spring kit and I am changing it as we speak. What should I look for as far as driveability? Will I be able to feel a difference?

Edit: tension-wise the stock spring feels like a tall yellow, but is a little shorter.

You would take it to 2500 in gear and smash the **** out the pedal. If it bogs the spring is too little, if not try a lighter one till it bogs. What does your BG sheet say about adjustment of the vs?

page 11 or this manual

Shows the chart that lists the plain spring as being standard. I would at least go to the tall yellow. The plain isn't all the way open till 8160 rpm.

Nice, I will do some tuning after work. That should make a huge difference. Thanks Ebke.

Went from tall yellow, to short yellow, to the white spring this afternoon and it never bogged. I ended up leaving the white spring in. I was doing second gear pulls because 1st spins so much. It feels a little better.

You really need to tune this. Posted via Mobile Device

I know, a proper tune would surely wake this motor up. I need to get the 8.8 rear in first. This 10 bolt has a bent axle and it vibrates like crazy on the dyno.
