I just heard about this tailgate failure thing today. Here's a blog article about it:
http://themagsreport.blogspot.com/2007/10/tundragate.html
Note, the guy says he has had Tacos and a T-100 in the past and not had problems but the Tundras gate fails. So it isn't just domestic truck guys over abusing the Tundra's tailgate. There are lots of other good things out there like how the tailgate lift assist system will cause the tailgate to fall off while you're driving if it isn't latched Good stuff. Here's a thread with pictures of a failed tailgate

Quite obviously, Toyota did not design the tailgate properly on the Tundra. Not only that- they hyped how light and easy to close it was when they launched the Tundra- seems like it's that way because it's made of tinfoil. On the heels of the camshaft failures and the transmission problems they've experienced, I am only left to ponder one question- what's for lunch tomorrow?

The owner of that truck said that there was a golf cart loaded on the tailgate and his 17 year old daughter was driving the truck way too fast over a bumpy dirt road
200Lbs or so may not be that much just sitting on the gate, but get that much mass moving and you can generate some serious force. Sure you would feel comfortable gently loading 200Lbs on your tailgate, but would you drop the weight onto the tail gate from a couple feet?

I've done **** like that countless times with all different kinds of Chevy's & Fords. No problems.
The best is setting a washer and dryer on the tailgate while ramping over intersections till they catch enough air to fly off. lol
**** Toyota.

So far there are 513 people who have signed a petition after having tailgate problems.
http://www.petitiononline.com/Kwasted/petition.html
Many owners of the new Tundra are experiencing tailgate failures at an alarming rate. Verifiable reports and photographs have been published on Toyota internet forums that recount both structural failures and tailgates actually coming off while the vehicles are in motion.

The tailgate on my dads '03 chevy bent like a little ***** just like that. His new taco hasn't and it's taken some abuse. Thats pretty funny about the tundra though, definately a design flaw that i'm sure they'll correct. Ford has definately had a pretty good amount of design flaws in the past lol

ford and chevy have been developing 1/2 tons for a long time now though. how long has toyota been in the 1/2 ton market? i think they are doing just fine.
i would buy the toyota if i didnt need to do any heavy towing or anything.
for any real pickup work i would buy nothing but chevy though.

ford should just lower the tire pressure instead of actually changing the suspension so it doesnt roll over as often! oh wait...they did?

Ok so a couple flaws come up with in the first year of Toyota becoming a full size truck. Big deal. Ford and Chevy have been making full size trucks for years and have had there flaws, but when toyota finally decides to get into the game all there failures are pointed and laughed at. Toyota will be back and will rule that ASS!!!!!!!!

It's not Ford's fault Firestone can't make a safe tire. lol

No, it's not Ford's nor Firestone's fault that soccer moms are driving vehicles they can't handle and they don't know how to react in the event of a blow out. Explorers never rolled over because of flat tires, they rolled over due to noobs that don't know what to do when they got flat tires.

I dont' feel that being new to the market should be an acceptable excuse for a shitty product.
The reason i hate toyota is probably obvious but ill come out on this one. I fear for the american automakers. While the tundra might be made here in the states under the same conditions as GM's and Fords. They have a good leg up on our makers because they aren't tangled up in unions,Then with the rest of toyota's products produced overseas at a fraction of the cost of US products, it makes staying in the market with higher labor cost very hard. IN the end toyota has an the ablity to slowly squeeze US manufactures into bankruptcy. Which at htis point is the best thing for them but not the best teh economy.
I preferr US domination in well everything... toyota.. reducing our dominance bothers me.

ford lowered the reccomended tire pressure on a firestone tire. its fords fault.
4 cam torino
7th November 2007, 09:48 PM
I will say again, no one at Ford did anything to cause a vehicle with a blown tire to roll over. In addition to this, they only dropped the pressure a few PSI. How many people do you know that drop the pressure on their tires for more traction? They aren't blowing tires out are they? A few PSI sin't going to generate enough heat to cause tire failure unless the tire is faulty

I have driven an Exploder crazily and never rolled it (crank the wheels and jam the brakes on gravel to scare the **** out the passengers). I think some people just don't know how to drive.

I drive a Bronco II like a Formula 1 car every day. It has recall Firestones on it. Literally, I bought it from someone that worked at Ford and yanked some brand new recall tires and put them on it.

I drive it hard and I never check the pressure in them. ****, I've had two punctures and kept driving it around for a few days while just putting some more air in the tire each morning.

so dropping it from 35 to 26 is a few psi?
