Well here we are again. Another racing season has come to an end so its time to work on the projects I have let go. Its time to Get old red back in fine shape for winter. The main project is swapping in the 383 we raced last year in the factory stock. Its a 180 dart head, 9 to 1, 6" rod 383. I will keeping the edelbrock eps, the holley truck avenger 670 and the headers and duals already on the truck.
The truck is a 1984 K10 (1/2 ton 4x4 for you stupid people)
2.5 inch lift
Rebuilt 1988 700r4 transgo shift kit, more clutches and a beast
200 over stock converter (approx 1550)
rebuilt 208 transfercase
axles are gm corp 10 bolts with 4.10s.
Front axle has a trutrax
Rear has a detroit and superior axles
The chassis has a ORD, steering box brace, sway bar disconnect
Looking to slowly start buying new sheet metal for it as soon as I see where this divorce thing is going to do with my income.

Got the 383 torn down to the short block and cleaned up a little. Have to change springs and studs for the mild cam its getting. Looked pretty good for 25+ shows.

Picked up all the tin and parts to make it stockish again. Checked cam to rod clearance and looked at it with a beer in my hand.

No one knows what those numbers actually mean; even the people who designed it. Where does it fall in the race cam fraction scale? 1/4? 3/8? 1/2? IIRC RV cam is usually around 5/8 race, right?
Hillbilly
29th October 2009, 08:08 AM
I would say 1/16th race cam.

Hillbilly

It will be one of the most overbuilt truck engines ever. It used to see 6500+ every night for 30 times a night for 20+ show. Still has cross hatches in the cylinders.

I was expecting 20' long smokey burn outs. Doesn't do that but pulls real hard down the road. Pulls hills easy. Have to do a little timing/jetting to make sure its at its best.

Found a good deal on a tpi setup seriously considering the swap and then having the shop tune the pig. I think the injectors are a little small but we will see.

Has been kinda sitting but since I am still fighting a EGT problem on the k30 (and its heater sucks balls) I went back to driving it. Pussed out and had a local shop replace the heater mode switch when simple trouble shooting didn't find the problem. Drove it to lincoln and decided the 6 mpg may need some attention. Going to get a 180 thermostat after work and maybe order a strip kit for the truck avenger. Also sometime this week it is getting new dual exhaust since the current mufflers are rusting/cracking and I wanted to go to 2.5" anyway. Should check the timing and talk the shop boys into letting me spend a day tuning the rattlely old 383. Note to self,6" rod 383s with 1" CH pistons sound like a 6.2 and maybe aren't meant for DD duty. That reminds me time to check the oil.

Just never got too it. Brackets were going to be a pain in the ass. I will just tune the holley. Heck it may get sold if I sell my house. Then I will get a 8100 3/4 ton.

It runs like 100% better. Tuned the crusing for 15.5 to 1 afr but if you touch the pedal it goes back to 14.7 then on down to 12.5 wot. No hicups. Hoping for 10+ mpg Woot! Also considering TBI but I really don't want to work that hard. We will see.
