Good point, generally they simply transfer and absorb power...

parasitic loss through the drivetrain...? Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought a manual ate up ~15% and an auto ~20-25%.
As much as I hate auto's though, I think you should stick with it Ali, cuz I know you'll get the itch to boost it and keeping stalled auto + not losing boost = win

It = Ali's automocar
'd = would
be more fun = subjective assessment of the level of pleasure derived from said automocar
and = a coordinating conjunction which links the two participles "be" in addition to "make"
make = produce
more = a higher value, in this case, a number. A number of what, you might ask? Keep reading to find out!
power = in this case, horsepower as measured at the drive wheels which would turn the drums on a dynamometer
Wherefore doth I sayeth such a sentenceth? Ah, because a car with a manual transmission will suffer less parasitic loss through heat and friction in said transmission than the same car would with an automatic transmission. I didn't say it would be faster with a manual. That'd be silly.
All I said was that his car would subjectively be more fun and provide a larger numerical value representative of the quantitative amount of Rear Wheel Horsepower on the dynamometer chart if it were equipped with a manually shifted transmission as opposed to an automatically shifted transmission, but in fewer words.
Hope that helps, sweeties. :)
86Shelby
5th October 2009, 06:40 PM
Oh, so you mean the manual transmission would absorb less power that the engine has already produced. I still don't see how it produces any more power... ;)
regal403
5th October 2009, 07:02 PM
You consider "it" = engine. You're talking engine dynos.
I am saying "it" = car. I'm talking chassis dynos.

you are saying that it has more power transferred to the rear wheels, thats different than making more power.
No, I said it'd be more fun and make more power with a manual. I think I have made myself clear on what each of those words meant in context.
-Would the engine produce the same number of horsepower on an engine dyno? Obviously, since the transmission is not included in such an experiment.
-Would the car produce the same number of horsepower on a chassis dyno with an automatic as compared to a manual? Obviously not, due to frictional losses.
regal403
5th October 2009, 07:37 PM
Case in point: Hillbilly.
His car made 475 hp at the rear wheels with a Super T-10.
His car made 406 hp with a TH400.
It ran quicker with the TH400, and is more bulletproof.
It's always a good move to lose WHP.
Less power = more traction.

Ya know, with the offset of those wheels, a stock width 12 bolt just might be about perfect. Either that or an 8.5" from an early 70's A-body. Can't remember who off the top of my head, but there's a couple companies that make the correct control arms to bolt them in.
Iceman does and the local outfit Baseline suspension also. Kevin at baseline is also gonna have out a control arm to bolt up an 8.8 ford soon. Which anyone who's stupid will tell you is a better choice than a 9" or a 12 bolt. :Thumb:

I know it's been done a few times, but I'm honestly suprised more people don't adapt the 8.8 into these cars. They're lighter than the 9", at least as plentiful (if not more), can be built plenty strong, and Foxes had basically the same suspension design as the G-bodies, so the basic layout for all the mounts is already in place. They have a bit more aftermarket support too, if I'm not mistaken. Get one from a Fox chassis Lincoln or Thunderbird and I'd bet the width is pretty darn close too.

Your motor mount halfs don't match up well. I see reason to be concerned. What are the two motor mount halves designed for?

Ali, why don't you just cut the back ear off of the engine side of your mounts and weld it back on so it fits closer. If you machine a bushing it still has the potential to bend the bolt.

You can go several ways with your uppers. Ideally, you'd want some adjustable ones, but if that rear was built right, you shouldn't really need them. So you could just get some standard ones with poly bushings for pretty cheap, or box your uppers to match the lowers and put new bushings in them. Or upgrade to spherical bushings to match the lowers but still retain some articulation. Personaly I'm not a big fan of the solid mounts on those arms as they will allow almost no articulation of the suspension. Fine for a track only car, but our "tracks" aren't exactly the smoothest sometimes. But we'll figure something out.
