Enough with the Jeeps already! Finally going to get back to my roots and build another K5. I scoured a few salvage yards and found this jewel. It's got some rust, but not a lot and is structurally sound. It is pre dented which is always a nice feature so I don't have to feel bad when I lean this one against the same tree down at Tuttle that I've leaned everything else that I own.

http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk117/fmstruck/0725091118a_295216.jpg

I cleaned it up and out today after I got it home and the floors are in really good shape. I'll post more pics later.
Plans are to lift it 4" with a lift I got from Frank the multicolored Hillbilly ride. Eventually I would like it to be on 38s but probably on 33s or whatever I can find for now. I have a pair of 4.56 geared 3/4T axles that will replace the weak 10 bolts. The same donor will provide a decent 350 sbc. Trans and Tcase will be SM465 and 205.
Hopefully this will be somewhat of a carbon copy of my 77 K5. I miss it dearly.

There a mulitple fails in this thread.
1. No name? Common even "ol blue" would be something.
2. You miss the brown one after owning it twice? Fail It wasn't THAT rusty
to many others to talk about.

fmstruck
27th July 2009, 03:29 PM
1. I'm sure it will acquire a name at some point. I have to see what kind of personality it has first.
2. Technically I only owned the brown one once.
3. You don't know what you've got till it's gone.

Installed a stereo and some 6x9s. Got my Beadlocks in all 4 tires. Bolted down the LP tank. I welded the spider gears in the rear end, so that only leaves clearancing the front driveshaft and it'll be ready for the trail.
Pics tomorrow.

Propane tank takes up most of the cargo area. Not real pleased with this tank. I may have to scrounge for another.

This is my nice one. I have some other trucks for beating on. I thought of putting my big block and some 3/4t axles in but these ones are rebulit, the rear has new bearings and a posi carrier, and all new ball joints/ bearings and u joints in the front. I don't want to put in old used 3/4t axles to replace my brand new 1/2t axles when I wouldn't need the strength anyway. The 12 bolt and D44 are plenty for putting around.

Nothing photo-worthy, but I did get my title issue resolved. I ended up getting an Assembled Vehicle title. What a fiasco! It's a really long, but kinda funny story actually. Suffice it to say, I had to go back to the Sherriff's office 3 times before we got the inspection right. I sent my paperwork in to the State offices twice, because they misinformed me. I ended up changing a door on the drivers side so that I had VIN displayed that matched one of the titles I was turning in. (I have since replaced that door with the one that belongs on the truck.)
The only real problem I see, is that now every time a law enforcement official runs my plate, it comes back to a 2009 Assembled Vehicle and not a 1984 Chevy K5. I have already been pulled over once in Fairbury because of it. No other reason. I had to explain it all to the officer. He still doesn't understand.

I didn't realize TBI was that desirable. I guess if you don't have a carb that is tuned correctly that's half the problem. Do you guys just like the way TBI performs when the truck isn't flat? I like the Truck avenger on my 86 so far. Seems to run good. I lifted the front of the truck up with the air jack at work to about a 45 deg angle and it was still idling perfect.

I've have to clean the PCV passage on several cars and trucks with TBI. Along with replacing injectors, ignition modules, pickup assembly's in the dist, map sensors, tps sensors, etc. It's probably because the shop I work at specializes in GM stuff, so we see a lot of those cars and trucks. You're right though compared to some stuff they seem to be pretty low maintenance.

Didn't know that. What was the difference in the GVWR? was it the 6 bolt "heavy half" K20/2500 vs. the 8 lug K20/2500? I'm pretty sure I've seen them, but did they make 8 lug SF14 bolts? I have seen some newer 88-up K2500's with 6 bolt axles and semi floaters, but never payed that much attention really.

What the easiest way to tell the 8 lug SF14 vs the 8 lug FF14? It seems like the FF14's Ive seen have bigger/wider brake drums when viewed from the rear. I guess the rear cover would be bigger also. Anything else to identify them quickly?

A semi floater will be flat at the drum like a 12bolt/10bolt. A full floater will have a hub sticking out through the wheel with eight 1/2" bolts (3/4' head) retaining the axle.

That is the hub on a full floater.

It's a giant piece of ****... It is a LWB stepside, thats ugly as ****. It doesnt run, and the body is just sitting on the frame not bolted down at all. I have my camera at work, I'll get some tomorrow. I don't want to speculate to much, but I think the whole body is pretty much original. It all matches pretty good if it was pieced together.

When did they start using the hyd clutches? Theres an '81 GMC K1500 with a 4 speed out there to. It should have a 465/208? Not sure if he would part it out it's still a pretty complete truck.

They used SM465/NP205 combos with fixed yokes from 1973 to '79 (except for some very rare '74 and '75s that had optional SM465/NP203 combos). These used a short 10 spline output shaft, a coupler sleave, a figure 8 adapter housing pattern, and a male 10 spline input shaft on the NP205 In 1980 they used rear slip yokes except for crew cabs. In 1981 everything besides K30s began using a long 32 spline output shaft with an NP208. The NP208 has the generic round 6 bolt pattern, and uses a female input shaft, eliminating the weak coupler sleave. In 1985 the entire line up switched to hydraulic clutches. Also in 1985, K30s began using the same long 32 spline output shaft as the other trucks, but still retained the NP205, except with the round 6 bolt pattern and a female input shaft. The K5, K20 crew cabs, and Suburbans switched from the NP208 to the NP241 in 1989. Any other questions?

I was wrong about a few things... the thing doesn't even have a motor/trans or t/case in it. I thought it has a trans and t/case, it has pedals and a 4 speed steering column, but thats it. I think someone bought the trans/tcase a couple years ago while I wasn't working there full time. It has the SF14 bolt, and a corp 10 bolt front. Looks like an older frame to me but why would it have a SF14 in the rear? When did they star using those? I know the 10 bolt is possible if its a 78 and newer frame. I got a closeup of Martins emblem also.

I think the only thing worth a crap is the axles and the hood, maybe the grill is reusable. Cab is rusted, as you can see every body panel is dented or rusted, ect. I tallked to him today. Not for you... sorry:( I asked him if he'd let me take the axles from it for my 86 but he says he's gonna put the axles under his 79 GMC. Pisses me off to, I know that thing will sit there forever. He was surprised it didn't have a trans or t/case too, I guess when you have like 10 trucks and a whole freaking lot full of junk cars you forget stuff.
