Well I at least am starting to gather parts, so I guess it's time for me to make one of these.

Bought the car from a guy in Florida, had a hell of a time getting it shipped up here, but it did eventually make it's way down here.

Navy Blue Metallic, 59k miles, black leather, t-tops, etc.

Plans are :
-Beef up the drivetrain (9'' rear, TH350 reverse manual with tbrake)
-Nitrous
-Suspension and sticky tires

The only work that's been done so far is putting new brake pads and rotors on it all around, an oil change, and removal of the strut brace. However I have already purchased a nitrous kit, wheels and tires are on the way and should arrive friday, and I will purchase the rear when I have the funds.

I was going to buy the rear first thing but I forgot to factor in the cost of registration into my budget, and then I found a deal on the wheels/tires that I just couldn't pass up, same with the nitrous...so I spent about $1800 already and need to save up a tad more before I drop another 2 grand on the rear :S

anyway i'll get some pics up when I get a chance

Slicks and skinnies are here!!! :woot:

15x10 weld draglites with 11.5x27 QTP slicks, and 15x3.5 on the front with MT FrontRunners

I had them shipped to my office and they still need a good cleaning so no pics just yet, but i'll take some when I get home

spoonraker
16th July 2009, 10:33 AM
yeah, since there was a smudge on my bill of sale they actually called the seller and he told them the real purchased price, they threatened to arrest me for tax fraud and everything.

if I would have just known they were gonna call I could have easily just told him what price to say, but oh well

I have yet to see or hear this car, wat mods were previously done to the car?

spoonraker
16th July 2009, 01:34 PM
Ahh yeah forgot to list that...

Mods that were on the car when I bought it:
-rear lower control arms
-subframe connectors
-panhard bar
-255 lph fuel pump
-mac mid length headers
-****** catback w/ 3'' cutout (always open cause I don't have the cover)
-hotcam
-lid
-3800 stall converter and tranny cooler

i'll get some pics today since the car is actually somewhat clean right now

haha yeah I didn't wash it for forever since it was sitting outside at the mercy of my neighbor's ****ing cottonwood tree. In one day it would look like **** so I let it go until I finally got around to clearing out a spot in the garage for it.

spoonraker

God damnit, I need to grind my calipers a bit more for these draglites to fit. Even though the previous owner ground them for draglites already mine are 2'' wider and apparently that means they don't fit the same.

cole
17th July 2009, 02:17 PM
whats the backspacing on them?

spoonraker
17th July 2009, 03:12 PM
That's what ls1tech said the ideal BS is for a 10'' wheel, and they fit great when they were on. I just need a bit more grinding so they don't rub.

cole
17th July 2009, 03:16 PM
thats what i thought, too...hence, "odd"

spoonraker
17th July 2009, 03:26 PM
have you never heard of having to gring the calipers a bit to get 15'' wheels to fit? Its required for almost all 15'' wheels. Ahmad did his for his summit stars. I think right now only bogart makes a 15'' wheel specifically designed to clear fbody brakes.

cole
17th July 2009, 04:38 PM
oh yes

ls1 brakes are gay...there are some people who have actually lt1 rear brake swaps to get certain wheels to fit (greg weld, etc.)

Thunder

centerline telstars are supposed to be a pretty close fit.

17th July 2009, 05:50 PM
Telstars are the worst wheels to buy for a forth gen. Everybody i asked said dont even waste your time trying to them to fit. I have LT1 rear calipers already so i should be better off when i get drag wheels.:woot:

I didn't get mine balanced, never had any problems...

Then why does your car not run and his does?

spoonraker
18th July 2009, 09:55 PM
god damn you have to grind more off the calipers than I would have imagined. The slicks are on, and they spin...sort of. Still plenty of grinding at least on one side, and I haven't even attempted fitting the skinnies yet. :S

spoonraker
19th July 2009, 05:31 PM
Ok well the calipers are finally ground down enough and after rolling the car down the driveway and back up and taking the wheels off to double check rubbing I can now see that I have to cut off my bump stop mounts...ugh... getting close though.

If the front brakes are going to be this bad then I'm going to just leave the stock tires on the front until I have money saved up for a set of drag brakes that will clear the wheels without issue.

grind grind grind grind...after doing this and realizing just how much material you have to actually take off, I'm gonna save up my money for real drag brakes that will clear the wheels without modification. I sure am not doing this with my front ones, so the skinnies will have to wait. At the point when I took these pictures I still wasn't even close to having done enough...I put the wheels on and they didn't even budge. Now they spin but I have to chop off the bump stops for clearance :S

oh you silly noobscicle... you don't need to grind much off the front, its mostly the corners and the back... plus the lettering thats embossed on the caliper. PBR australia was causing issues with my wheels, ground it off and they were fittin fine.

spoonraker
19th July 2009, 06:30 PM
You have 8'' wheels mine are 10'', also yours are Summit and not Weld. Trust me I've been marking them up and only grinding down where it's rubbing. I also already removed the bumpstops, but I still have to chop off the mounts because they were rubbing the inside of the tire.

****'s lame. Anybody know what sort of brakes I could buy that would clearance the 15'' draglites without any grinding or spacers?

srt-4_uk
19th July 2009, 06:32 PM
V6 camEro brakes any smaller?

spoonraker
19th July 2009, 06:38 PM
Probably not, but I dunno. I've heard LT1 brakes have better clearance, but I've never definitively heard anybody say they'll fit 15'' wheels without any modification.

Thunder
19th July 2009, 07:04 PM
yes LT1 brakes clear.

way to pick out odd 10" wheels

if you want to try a couple of wheel spacers, i have 2

spoonraker
19th July 2009, 07:23 PM
I have wheel spacers for the front, but I'd prefer to not run them. I just made a thread on LS1tech asking what the best option is for brakes that will clear 15'' rims front and back without modification, I'll see what they say.

spoonraker
2nd August 2009, 04:22 AM
I sold the wheels/tires because they were just too big of a pain to fit and I didn't want to destroy my brake system. I'll be replacing my ground-to-hell calipers and spending the money on some wheels that will fit directly with no brake modification. Probably Bogarts, and as an added bonus, they are considerably lighter than the Welds previously.

I'm going to shift my focus back to beefing up the drivetrain. First thing I need to buy is a rear end. I've been talking to several people about buying a used 12 bolt or 9'', but I guess if nothing happens I'll bite the bullet and buy something new.

After that I'm going to install the nitrous. I just need some safety stuff and accessories.
Nitrous shopping list :
-Fuel pressure safety switch
-Window switch
-Bottle heater
-Might pick up a remote opener
-Purge

3rd August 2009, 08:22 PM
I finally went and picked up a T45 socket so I could finish removing my back seat. Maybe now it's actually big enough for people with legs to sit back there. Except there's no more seatbelts. Oh well...

http://s87301718.onlinehome.us/images/camaro-worklog/2009-08-03/6.jpg

With me driving I need to drop all the weight I can in the car, plus after seeing the job the previous owner did attempting to install an a-pillar gauge pod I thought it would be a good idea to check out his wiring of the aftermarket fuel pump... :ohnoes:

Here is my fuel pump relay. Yes it is grounded to a thin floating chunk of metal that is not a direct part of the unibody, and yes it is attached with velcro that the glue has since melted off of and it is now just dangling by the wires

http://s87301718.onlinehome.us/images/camaro-worklog/2009-08-03/1.jpg

This is a giant hole cut in the trunk floor so he could gain access to the fuel tank without dropping it. Lazy, however fine with me...except all he did to cover the giant hole was duct tape the piece of metal back on...

http://s87301718.onlinehome.us/images/camaro-worklog/2009-08-03/2.jpg

more random wiring mess...

http://s87301718.onlinehome.us/images/camaro-worklog/2009-08-03/4.jpg

Not sure what these wires are for, but I'm guessing it was for an amplifier or something that used to be in the car

http://s87301718.onlinehome.us/images/camaro-worklog/2009-08-03/5.jpg

Guess I have some re-wiring to do

just got off the phone with the guy sellin the strange rear and it's gonna be mine. just need to figure out which is cheaper an 800+ mile round trip drive, or the shipping from branson, MO to here. if I picked it up i'd take the camaro and stay for a big cruise event they have comin up, so it would probably be a lot cheaper to ship it cause that's $200+ in gas

Burntz
4th August 2009, 03:32 PM
ship it, get it in asap.

Sucks about the wiring, might as well go through, do it nice and neat so you don't have to worry about it. I'd drill / tap some mounting holes for the cover to get to the tank so its a bit more secure.

Btw, If you ever need a lighter guy that still knows how to drive, sign me up :D

I have officially purchased a rear end...finally.

Strange 12-bolt, spool, 35 spline axles, 4.10 gears (gonna swap in some 3.70s), LCA relocation brackets, and 0 miles after a rebuild. $1600 :woot:

Should be here either friday or monday.

I also found a good deal on an NX remote nitrous bottle opener, so I bought that. Oh and I got some mounting brackets for the bottle, so just need some more nitrous safety stuff and slicks and I'm ready to go pretty fast.

And I'll probably be buying a big suspension kit from the same guy with the rear end. Midwest chassis adjustable tq arm, adjustable panhard, and adjustable LCAs, boxed SFCs. I can't afford it until I get paid next, but he said he'd hold it for me so :woot:

If anybody wants a good deal on a nice motor the guy is also selling a 2008 LS3 shortblock with 4XXX miles on it, plus heads for $2300

I went to remove my front sway bar and it looks like the previous owner failed miserably trying to put it back on at some point...

Should be simple. There's two mounts with two bolts each, the endlinks were already disconnected...I get to the last bolt and this is what I find...

http://s87301718.onlinehome.us/images/camaro-worklog/2009-08-10/1.jpg

I guess now I have to remove not just the swaybar and bushings, but the entire driver's side mount along with it at the same time. Or maybe I'll just cut the bar out.

Slikrider
10th August 2009, 07:53 PM
You really tore that interior up........you really don't care about the looks of this thing or what?

Should at least fix the handle to the center console, the rip in the leather, and take those hideous exhaust tips off.

spoonraker

I bought the car in a rather haggard state. The tear in the seat, messed up center console, busted kick panel, shitty gauge pod install, and scary fuel pump install were all the previous owner's work. And apparently he had some fun with the sway bar as well. I plan on fixing or replacing the seat, fixing the center console, and replacing most of the interior that I took out after I'm done cleaning up the wiring and installing the nitrous. The only thing on the interior that I'll keep out is the rear seat backrest.

Slikrider
10th August 2009, 09:11 PM
Ya, that sounds like a good idea. A nasty inside just isn't appealing to me, no matter how fast the car is.

spoonraker
10th August 2009, 09:19 PM
Well yeah, that's the part you see all the time while driving it. The seat really bothers me, but it's just not a priority right now with me being so close to having the nitrous ready. I've got a lot of good drivetrain parts on the way and then all I'll need is some safety switches for the nitrous to work.

I'm thinking of ditching the radio and fabricating a switch panel for the nitrous in it's place. All the speakers are blown to **** and you can hardly hear anything over the engine anyway. Or maybe I'll just buy a cheap single din head unit and use the cubby hole that all the radio install kits for formely 1.5/2 DIN stereo cars come with to build a panel over.

My car has only cosmetic issues. These are cheap and easy fixes. It's still the most desireable year with great options, low miles, and decent mods. $7k for my car is a steal even if it needs a few hundred bucks into the interior and a good buffing. It may look a bit tired but it still ran down your shiny car didn't it? :) Im not trying to say anybody's car is worth a certain amount, but they just don't pull the same prices they used to and a lot of people still think they're made of gold. There's a reason why there are so many around, I wasn't even looking for one this one was just so cheap I decided to go for it.

Anyway, I know my car is no show candidate, I never thought I had a chance at a trophy I just wanted to have fun and donate some money to the cause. I have my priorities in order on my car, and making it show worthy isn't at the top of the list. I paid for what I wanted and nothing I didn't need.

Well let me get my cam installed then wei'll run'em again so then its a bit more fair since you have a cam and mine is stock (even though its only a hotcam it still helped you get me by 1.5 cars max) Maybe we could even run'em again a couple more times to see if i can pull on you with a good launch.

oh, and i wasn't hatin on your car...i just remembered the arguement between you and purplemx3 with both of the camaros.

For those of you wondering why my rear end isn't here yet, the guy for some reason isn't able to cash my money order. He said every place keeps telling him that they've been seeing a lot of fraudulent money orders and they won't cash it. He's gonna try a credit union tomorrow, but if that fails he's just gonna mail the money orders back, I'll get my money back, and we'll have to do a wire transfer or something. I wish the guy just had PayPal. Oh well..it's still comin, just delayed. I'm still hoping it's here by this weekend.

Ok well as you all know I destroyed my drivers side t top. I acquired a replacement, but I didn't want to carry around another key just to lock that one t top so I swapped the lock from the broken one to the new one.

If anybody ever needs to do this, here's how.

Time required : 10 minutes
Tools required : Phillips screwdriver, small flat head screwdriver or a knife or anything that you can pry tiny retainer clips out with.

-Remove the screws that hold the trim on, there's 1 on each side...

http://s87301718.onlinehome.us/images/camaro-worklog/2009-08-16/1.JPG

http://s87301718.onlinehome.us/images/camaro-worklog/2009-08-16/2.JPG

-Remove the retainer clip or whatever it's called that holds the handle on

http://s87301718.onlinehome.us/images/camaro-worklog/2009-08-16/3.JPG

-When you go to pull off the trim make sure you detach this area otherwise you could break the plastic and it won't reseat properly

http://s87301718.onlinehome.us/images/camaro-worklog/2009-08-16/4.JPG

-here's what the guts should look like (only hopefully yours are less rusty)

http://s87301718.onlinehome.us/images/camaro-worklog/2009-08-16/5.JPG

-remove the retaining clip from under the lock. This one was very easy, I just used the screwdriver handle to pull it out.

http://s87301718.onlinehome.us/images/camaro-worklog/2009-08-16/6.JPG

-pull the lock out

http://s87301718.onlinehome.us/images/camaro-worklog/2009-08-16/7.JPG

-Put the new lock in place (it will only go in one way, so don't worry you can't screw this up), and reassemble everything in the opposite order you took it apart.

Also I finally got all my payment problems figured out for my damn rear end. Assuming that my second round of money orders don't get lost in the mail I should have some goodies coming pretty soon.

-Strange 12 bolt, 35 spline axles, 4.10 gears (will change to 3.70), LCA relocation brackets
-Midwest Chassis and Performance adjustable panhard bar

spoonraker
20th August 2009, 09:28 AM
I got a sweet deal on all of this, couldn't pass it up. Otherwise I probably would have done just the rear and used the suspension money to get slicks. I spent a lot less than it costs for a new Strange 12 bolt for this whole package, and all the suspension is brand new still in box, and the rear is straight out of a shop from a rebuild.

Here's the mod list one more time for tonight.

Hotcam (poopy cam)
Mac Mid-length headers (blah)
Lid
Tubular mild steel LCAs
Tubular mild steel diamond-style subframe connectors
Some sort aftermarket panhard bar (gonna take a guess and say tubular mild steel)
3800 stall converter with a trans cooler
Little bit of weight reduction (back seat rest, front sway bar, spare tire/jack)
street tires
my 350 lb fat ass behind the wheel

...drumroll...

8.245 @ 87.08 (2.032 60')

Finally beat my 8.33 on the very last run of the night, and yes I have a slip for this one.

I was getting slower every run and finally I figured out that I just wasn't doing a good enough job of knocking the sand off my tires on the burnouts. Once I did that and figured out a good launch speed I started getting back to the 8.30s quick. My last runs were 8.451, 8.406, 8.393 and finally I got the 8.245

I'm happy with the car. It got better mileage on the trip out than I thought, ran hard all night, and made it home just fine wasn't even all that hot.

I got as good of a launch as I think is possible on those street tires. Nose came up and I gave it just enough gas to stay on the edge of traction but keep the power on so it didn't come down. Figure you can probably take a tenth or two off with a really good launch on slicks, but who knows how much you'll lose because of the power difference. You shoulda come :(

I don't know what it is with me and shipping, but I always have issues or delays it seems like.

The guy I bought all my rear and suspension from works on an oil pipeline and he got called out of town so the stuff hasn't shipped yet. All the suspension and the rear end is sitting in a speed shop in springfield missouri. The good news is that he's going to have the shop send out all the suspension pieces for free right away, I'll probably have them friday (not holding my breath). I was gonna wait and ship it all together, but it's been so long I just wanna see somethin before I go nuts.

The rear hasn't shipped yet because he is out of crates after shipping his motor and transmission, and with him being out of town just hasn't been able to get it crated up. Anyway, he's refunding me $200 (I only paid $100 for shipping), and I'm going to just call the shop directly and work with them to get it sent out.

So yeah, kind of a shitty update, but I still do have a rear end and a bunch of suspension "on the way"...

You seriously took your sway bar out for weight reduction??? You must be a moron!

The primary reason for removing the front sway bar was to help weight transfer on launches, the weight reduction is just a bonus.

Everybody says it ruins the handling, but it's a freakin drag car, what do I care? Plus an fbody with no front sway bar still handles just as well as my daily driver Saturn does with everything stock.

Ok I jumped the gun a bit. The diff cover was already dented, I just forgot about Brad telling me that when I bought it, it's been 3 months after all.

And the little brass cap was actually damaged by me when I went over it with a wire brush. I guess it was just temporary to cover the ABS sensor, which I'm not gonna use anyway. So it's probably a good thing I busted it, because if it broke that easily with a wire brush it would definitely have broken open bouncing around under the car. Now I just need to buy a bolt to seal off that hole.

All is well.

I think I'm cursed or something. Midwest Chassis had to machine new bushings for my suspension since they ran out, so I finally just got them today despite ordering them weeks ago. However, they forgot to ship me the rod ends for my LCAs, so I'm still waiting on those.

Sold the 12-bolt. I figured since I'm not going to get to run the car until winter is done, and I still needed to put a lot more money into the 12-bolt to get the right gears and a new diff cover, and finally because I sold it for more than I paid for it, why not? Now I'll just save up over winter and get a new 9'' like I planned on originally.

I bought 01SOMs NX nitrous kit and accessory package, thanks for the great deal!

NX wet kit, I'll be spraying a 150 shot.

I also took advantage of black friday sales and bought an HSW MicroEDGE nitrous controller. Has a built in window switch, TPS/WOT switch, AFR switch, and a ton more features. Really a great unit, especially for $120.

So here's where I'm at so far...

Have:
-SFCs, LCAs, panhard bar, and tq arm
-Complete nitrous kit with all safety accessories required

Will buy before Spring:
-Wheels/slicks
-9'' Rear

I'm hoping to have enough money to get a cage before Spring too, so it'll be legal at the track. If not, I won't be able to spray.

The nitrous kit and the accessory kit are both still new in box so hopefully i have all the fittings and crap.

I think the only thing I'm missing is a WOT/TPS switch, but the MicroEdge controller might have one built in, i'll have to read the manual. Also, I would like to put in a wideband, it's certainly not necessary just something I want to do.

Ok time to bump this thread...

Well it's finally starting to get nice enough to drive the Camaro again. I've decided that I'm completely changing the direction of the Camaro. It's no longer going to be an all out drag car. I'm going to keep it with a complete interior, keeping the stereo, and all that. I already sold the TH400 and I'm just going to stick with the 4L60E, it should hold up fine to the power I'll be making. I'm going to stick with the 10 bolt until it pops, I think with the auto it'll last quite a while and I like the idea of keeping the $2500 in my pocket as long as I can. I'm still going to install all the suspension pieces I have and I'm still going to install the nitrous. I'll be going drag radials instead of slicks.

The basic plan is to make it a nice clean drivable car that is still pretty quick. I just kind of a realized that having a super serious drag car just isn't within my means right now. I don't want to buy a truck and trailer, and I don't want to spend the $6k+ that I would have to in order to get the car where I wanted it. I'll be doing lots of small cosmetic stuff because the car is admittedly a bit rough right now.

Upcoming:
-Tune (needs it baaaaad)
-Electric cutout
-Suspension upgrades finally being installed
-Misc cosmetic stuff
-Nitrous install

I got my new lid and bellows today. I'm going to clean the MAF and air filter before putting it all back together. Also I'll probably change the plugs soon. I've also started on the suspension, I'll have the LCAs on today at least, and the panhard bar and tq arm are ready to go on next.

Also I finally ordered a set of wheels. I went with the racestar industries drag star wheel. LINK (http://www.racestarindustries.com/catalog.html) 15x10 rear and 15x3.75 fronts. MT ET Street DRs on the back and not sure yet what I'm gonna put on the front. If I can't find a cheap alternative like a VW tire or something I'll just buy the MT frontrunners.

If anybody is looking for a good street/strip wheel for an fbody I would suggest racestar industries. They are by FAR the cheapest direct fit (no grinding required) wheel for an fbody. For all four wheels, lugs, washers, and stems and shipping it was $699. When I called race star the owner gave me the number to one of his vendors in maryland that gave me a discount, probably saved me about $130 over the direct price.

oh and brook I still haven't completely scraped off the number on the windshield. **** is hard to get off but I'm working through it slowly with a credit card whenever I put gas in the car

Update:

http://imgur.com/PEdSz.jpg

Still needs centercaps put on, and I need to adjust the LCAs to center the wheels a bit better, but I think it's a major improvement.

btw I highly recommend big red tire for all your tire mounting needs, they did a great job for me. I told them the back tires might not fit because of the bumpstops and wheel well and if they rubbed to just take them off and put the stockers back on so I can drive home and mess with it. Instead, they pulled out an air hammer and cutoff wheel and chopped the bumpstops off for me and helped me give the suspension a really quick adjustment just to make them fit in there, only charged me $10 for all that extra work.

And Brook, two of the three numbers are still on the windshield.
