Anyhow here's the deal. I only have my explorer right now as my other is a bike. :( So ANY help is very very appreciated.

Basically here' the low down. I have driven my explorer for hte last two years with no problems ticks or noises. Well I had a routine service done today and they checked the transfer case. Well the fluid that ran out was honestly like a liquid silver color and very fine no chunks or particales. Well we drained it and put in fresh ATF. About an hour later I was testing out my 4x4 to make sure it was engaging after seeing the fluid earlier and and the lights light up but when I went to go the car wouldn't move at all. I tried 4HI, 4LO and Auto. I shifted through all the gears includiong reverse with no luck. Well every time I put it into park it makes a grinding noise now also but still doesn't move. It does go into park though I believe. Right now I got it towed and it's sitting outside. :(

Any ideas?

UPDATES:

Transmission fluid looks great and smells normal, vehicle also can be rolled while in park.

um it can roll in park? thats prolly not good. sounds to me you need a new or need to rebuild your tranfer case.

Helpful hints that tell you if your transfer case is bad:
The best way to check is to have your repair shop drain the fluid. Check for the following:
- Is there any fluid? *
- Does the fluid smell “burnt?” *
- Is the fluid silvery in color? *- Are there metal pieces in the fluid? *

Just read this

I'd just rebuild it cost alot less than getting a new one. unless you can find a good used one really cheap to get by with.

$800 new and $250-500 used with 25-70k miles. Rebuild kit is $130 but I have never done one before. Anyone want to help? :D

i know on gm vehicles they had a sensor for the 4wd. and on my 96 silverado it went out so when i shifted into 4wd it wouldnt engage b/c the sensor was out. i dunno if it could be the same as the ford. but definately something to look into. b/c if its just a sensor. replace the sensor and u have 4wd.

Here's an update. I checked all fluids in the differentials and transfer case to make sure they are topped off. I tried pushing the car around in each gear and I could. I tried turning the driveshaft by hand under the car and the front and rear are still linked together. I tested 4LO, 4HI, and Auto. With the igition On but the car shut off I could hear the shift motor working while turning the selector. I noticed that when I shift the car into park from shifting through the gears that I hear a kind of gear grinding to a stop sound. However if I go from park to nuetral without trying the other gears it doesn't grind. The vehicle still isn't moving but can be pushed around even in park. I have checked fuses also. What's next? What does this sound like? Please help.

I knew a guy that HAD a exploder and some thing went wrong and all I know is when he pulled the t case off and he had a broken shaft in the t case

Reaper
20th October 2007, 07:55 PM
i have been seeing alot of similar probelms that have been $39 shift forks in the t-case

have you even taken the t-case off yet?

im thinking you should just take it out and see what it is. i was thinking it sounded like a broken shaft too... except the fact it still sounds like you can get it in gears, i dunno. take it off. i have all of tomorow off so maybe ill stop by. give me a call if you want.

i didn't read through except the first couple post but the same thing happened on my 97 explorer sport, and i was able to push it while in park and drive with the ignition off. come to find out the tranny went out, it was replaced under warranty but now my t case is making noises and its gonna be about 150 to replace the gear inside to fix it...
