View Full Version : Tick.. Tick..

Alright so when I bought my 3k VR4 it had a tick in the engine that got faster as the rpms rose. I took it out and had the timing belt replaced and the other general 60k maintenance. My mechanic took out and replaced a couple pulleys quoted as being the problem...

Well needless to say since I'm typing this it's not fixed... The tick is rather loud and almost louder than the engine! Again it still increases frequency as the rpms rise...

I take the car out again next Tuesday to have my window regulator replaced and a new PVC hose put in but what are your thoughts on the tick? I wanna go out there knowing what I'm talking about...

PS:
I am n00b because this is my first car I care about and actually wanna learn about it... I'm no mechanic...

Is the noise coming from the top or bottom of the engine? Possibly lifter tick :dunno:

did you change your oil? You'd better hope its not rod knock.

common problem in 3000GT's. The problem is the lash adjusted (lifters). The hole in them is small in the 91-98's and this causes oil to not flow smoothly. It in no way causes any damage to your engine what-so-ever its just annoying.

To solve the problem there are a few things you can try, first is to run Seafoam in the crank case, this will help get the gunk thats built up in the hole of the lash adjusters loose. You can also try running a lighter oil as well. To fix the problem just buy '99 Lash adjusters (lifters).

see the problem? Ours are on the right, the 99's are on the left. I cant stress this enough, but this does not cause any damage to your motor what-so-ever.

check 3si for a set of used '99 lash adjusters, you can pick them up pretty cheap. The instal is rather easy as well. For my VR4 i ran seafoam thru the crank case then changed oil to 10w40 Redline Full Synthetic (although any synthetic is ok, redline is expensive but my dad was a dealer so i can get it cheap). I only get the "tick" when my motor is cold, or when the oil is dirty (thats when i know when to change oil).

^this man speaks truth. My stealth was the same way until i ran synthetic and again only ticked when it was cold.

And one more thing to be aware of coming from one VR4 owner to another...

check the bottom of your oil pan..is it dented at all? If it is, stop driving and remove the pan and beat the dent out. The oil pickup is less then 1/8of an inch from the bottom and it can starve the motor of oil if it cannot flow properly, this is the #1 cause for spun bearings. If yours does have a "slight" dent, make sure you monitor your oil pressure. If it happens to be low, bang that dent out!! You dont want to waste a motor.

Its also a good idea to pull your Y-Pipe off and investigate the inside of it for oil. If there's oil in the intake Y-Pipe pull the hoses off from your turbo's and see which one or if both of them have oil in them as well, if they do your seals are shot and you need to rebuild the turbo/s.

Well see I'm torn about the car. I've loved the cars forever but I don't wanna dump all my money into... Worst case scenario I run the tranny into the ground and put it the garage for a couple years 'til I'm out of college and actually can make some money...

If so then it's back to my double digit hp Cavalier..... :headchop:

don't know if its been said becuase i didnt want to read a thread about a 3000gt

but i believe ur car has HLA's. if the ticking changes with rpm i'd bet its a stuck HLA. run different oil or just change them.

add a can of Seafoam into existing oil, run for ~300miles. Change oil to a full synthetic (i personally use Redline, but Castrol Syntec is what'd i recommend if you're not willing to spend the money on Redline). See if that helps. If it doesn't, then just deal with the ticking or buy '99 lifters (lash adjusters) and install them.
