My freind is rebuilding a 427 tall deck motor. He shaved .0012 of the top of the block, and is going to use 6.535 with a stock crank. Also he using GM 781 oval port heads. He wants to run three-ring pistons insted of a four-ring piston. His question is what height of piston should he run? The motor is going to go in an 85 k20 Chevy 4x4, he wants to make it reliable, and make some decent power. Also what cam do you think he should run?

Piston should be a 1.785 Pin height for 0 deck in a 427T. I would look at a cam in the 214/224 @ .050 duration hyd. If he is smart he would go hyd roller though. Of course I believe trucks should have truck cams to use the stock drivetrain.

Looks like a stock 427 piston will work at .020 in the hole. I would consider a 454 crank to allow more cubes and a more common 454 piston. He does know that it will be a ***** to get a intake right?

Yeah it was running when he bought it with an edelbrock intake with spacers should he stay away from the spacers on the intake?

The spacers are fine most just used to be rect port only. I would seriously consider a 454 or 4.25 stroke crank. What exhaust does it have? I wonder if the headers would hit the floor pan because of the taller deck.
