well motor finally got here today. and loaded it off the pallet signed the frieght bill and it was on. i scored an authentic silvia floor mat which was on the pallet. seems that everything i needed was included(even a fuel pump and a driveshaft). i would later learn that the skyline driveshaft is longer than the oem automatic.

so the plan was to remove the transmission and move that first and come back for the engine.i had it dropped off at a local autozone and the manager was cool about it.

i also scored the oem intercooler and pipes. iam going with a bigger unit so are there any takers??

the 20 is fine, he got a steal on it, I doubt he wants to build a high hp track beast, I think he just wants something fun to play with and mod. and for what he paid for the motor I think he will get everything he wants out of the 20

not like Ive ever owned a swapped 240 or anything though....

yea but consider the different level of involvement and cost for doing an rb swap vs an sr. d

supersayianjim
7th February 2009, 07:20 PM
i went with the 20 cause of price(a steal at $800.00 for the set) and the fact that it drops right in using only a 20 crossmember(which iam in the process of getting) and the s-13 is more rb20ish of the other 3.

oh and the 20 is a great motor, revs nice and high in stock form, the 25 would just put out a bit more low torque, 26 is over priced in my opinion for a street car if ur not building something amazing, and you'd have to make sure u got the correct gen of 26 for the crank girdle thingy...

supersayianjim
8th February 2009, 10:09 AM
well last night i began stripping the engine down of stuff. i think i know why it was so cheap. this isnt my first imported motor. but it has a lot of oxidation(due to sea salt) so i need to get rid of this ****. does anyone have any recommendations as to what to use?? or do i have to sand everything??

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/oxidizedintake.jpg

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/oemalt.jpg

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/alt2.jpg

iam going to get the altenator and starter rebuilt(as finding a new one would be impossible) iam sure they work but for piece of mind later down the road.

there is a light coat of rust on the teeth of the pulley damper.

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/rustonpulley.jpg

and i removed and kept the belts. iam hoping to go to autozone or a parts store and match the size with another car model(likely nissan)

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/oembeltsold.jpg

heres the small stocker turbo. there is little shaft play but feels solid.
http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/thestockblowdryer.jpg

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/turbooutlet.jpg

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/oem02housing.jpg

i would like to upgrade to a bigger turbo before i get the car running. but that also means bigger injectors and a afc, tunning. want to just get it running and keep it simple for now. iam going to fun a nismo fpr,and a bigger intercooler and piping, along with 3" exhaust so hopefully that will give the stock hp a bump.

then i took a peek at the timing belt. youre supposted to change it out but it looks healthy and solid. the water pump is behind the belt so i dont know if i can change one without the other"yet".

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/takingapeekatthetimingbelt.jpg

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/healthylookingtimingbelt.jpg

the swap also came with the engine id plate

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/badgecomparison.jpg

and here is the ac condensor setup for the skyline. very different fron the 240. is there a way to get these plugs moved to the 240 to make the ac work??

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/skylineachookup.jpg

and the powersteering pump. there are 3 hoses(anyone know where the 3rd goes??) doesn anyone have any picke of a stock 240(s13) powersteering pump setup and where the hoses go?? greatly appreciated..

well it's been a wile but finally back on track to getting thsi thing started. my vans tranny took a dump on easter sunday. so ive been bumming and walking ever since. i will do it but i hate walking everywhere (not like n.y.c. where i can hop a train to where i need to go).

since my last post i addressed a few issues. as far as the oxidation of my metal (from the sea salt) i got these dremel bits.
http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/usethesetopolishmyalum.jpg

they do the job,but run out fast. i didn't get rid of all of the ox,but it looks much better than before. i also put in some spark plugs(from a z31 300zx turbo) perfect fit. and the same size as the ones that came with the motor.
http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/oldoemsparkplugs.jpg

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/notsurethecodenowpfr11aithink.jpg

i also mounted my clutch pedal and got a cheapo master cylinder from advance(oem is $150.00) the clutch slave is the exact one used in the 300zxtt(z32). and i got a steel braided swap clutch line(sweet)
http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/3pedalsnow.jpg

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/officallya5spdnow.jpg

and i got my full 3" exhaust also(from turbo dump-back) good looking welds(not bad for ebay) running a test pipe cause there is no smog inspection downhere. mounting was fairly easy(brought 2 new hangars)
http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/layingthepipe.jpg

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/notbadqualityfor2500.jpg

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/yeahitslong.jpg

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/mounted.jpg

i also installed my turbo timer(using a z32tt harness). next up was switching out the front crossmember as the 240 one will not hold the rb20.
it started out easy but tunred out to be a pain. getting those new steering rack bushlings on.
http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/switchingframes.jpg
the 240 frame was gunked up bad
http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/dirty240frame.jpg

and finally i had to switch over the powersteering lines to a later car.
http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/s-14powersteeringsetup.jpg

now ready for downpipe and tranny.
http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/waitingforengineanddownpipe.jpg

and were rocking and ready for the rb. i will be done next week. as iam waiting on 2 more packages(the harness from carl h) and (timing belt, fpr, seals) from a store in cali. everything else on the car is done EXCEPT. i have to cut the bumber support to fit the intercooler. but i will do that when the engine is in. ready to go ALMOST.

well yesterday put some stuff on
-nismo fpr
-oem thermostat
-new water pump
-was going to change timig belt(but they sent me the wrong one)

i think i finally got this powersteering setup complete.
http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/insidepsp.jpg
i have to take out these tabs in the back to eliminate the 4wd steering. then i had to go to westlake(they never have the right bolt) and cut to fit and torque down(fine thread)
http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/toolonglineme.jpg

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/cutbolttosize.jpg

and this is whats it replacing.

finished product
http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/pspfabbed.jpg

then quickly it was a fpr swap
http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/nismoownsoem.jpg

and on to the water pump. i had to take the damper off so i had to rent a puller real quick.
http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/hadtorentadamperpuller.jpg

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/oeoldtimingbelt.jpg

the old water pump had it
http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/idlertension.jpg
i used the dremel and polish brush to clean this up

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/cleanshinealmost.jpg

and i was test fitting the radiator for a look at how i would run my intercooler piping.
http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/testfitting.jpg

and finally my night got ****ed up when i realized they sent me the wrong timing belt.

supersayianjim
3rd May 2009, 03:12 PM
so i had to use the timing belt that came with the engine(its in good shape) due to me getting the wrong one shipped to me. iam going to also get tensionsers and iam going to chang the belt myself later with the engine in the car(i have to move the ic and rad etc). but its not hard at all switching out.
http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/reusedoriginalbeltfornow.jpg
and buttoned and belted up
http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/buttonedandbeltedup.jpg

well been working on the car for the last few dayz. and i thought mounting this intercooler would be a breeze(man it wasnt) the only really cutting tool i have is my trusty air cutter(from walmart $12.00) but the ***** is very relaible.

first i removed the bumper. iam running 2 half inch ic pipes i brought for my expo/dsm van. but my advice to anyone else is buy youre car specific kit.

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/bumperoffbeforeicfab.jpg

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/bunperoff2.jpg

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/bumpersupport.jpg
did some measurements and cut the support first. then i figured i would move onto the bumper itself. took like forever to cut this up.

and what i didn't take into account was that a high rpm cutting tool and plastic or rubber/paint. don't mix
http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/cuttingthebumpersmokyandhazardas.jpg

got really smokey really fast, made my eyes burn, but i had to get it done. opened the garage a few times(after turning off the noisy compressor) to air out this
http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/smokysituation.jpg

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/smoky2.jpg

then when i finally got that done. took some steal and was going to do the cheapo was and fad up some mounting brackets.
http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/fabbingicbrackets.jpg

that also took forever. cut one piece and gave up and went to lowes and got these.
http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/icbrackets2.jpg

still it wasn't working
http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/fabbingic2.jpg

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/fabbingic3.jpg

so i needed the piece after all.
http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/fabbingicbracketscomplete.jpg

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/fabbingic4.jpg

had this left over from my (supra days) and id use this for my bottom mounting brackets.
http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/copperhanger.jpg

SOME ISSUES that might hamper me(or maybe iam thinking too much about it..

-the oil pan. I know and small ding in an oil pan can cause pressure drop and cause a knock. when i got the motor the pan was fine. but some moving around on the pallet. and it got pushed up (a little) it looks worse in the pictures than it does in person.
http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/dingpan1.jpg

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/dingpan2.jpg

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/dingpan3.jpg

i tried to manver a screwdriver(bent) through the drain hole to try to push it back down. but that didnt go anywhere. i stabbed the pick up mesh(not hard) but got some more oil to come out. just wanted some opinions on how bad the pan looks?? if worse case i can get someone to weld it from the outside and pull it out.(cross fingers it will be okay)

-Tranny grease. i used white lithium grease on the throw out bearing and the clutch fork(is that okay) i thought there was also some other kind of grease for this?? but will the white lithium be okay??
http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/throwoutbearing.jpg

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/greasingclutchfork.jpg

also my clutch fork after i put the tranny on is compressed all the way in(like that when i took delivery or eng. is the clutch slave supposted to be compressed already or loose??(its not hooked up to the master yet.

and finally the heater hoses. is there a feed and return?? or can i use either top or bottom with the hoses from the engine??
http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/heaterlinestocar.jpg

slave should be compressed and your oil pan should be fine if its not dented all the way up to the pickup, and ive always used white lithium grease on my tob and clutch fork

supersayianjim

kool thanks. so what about the heater hoses?? is there a feed and return?? or it dosent matter which line is which..

matt
4th May 2009, 10:20 AM
I would pull the pan off and hammer it out, I had a civic hatch that had 1 small dent on the pan, and the dent just happened to be right where the oil pick up tube was and compressed it, and caused low oil pressure

supersayianjim
4th May 2009, 12:37 PM
my thoughts exactly. but this is common among imported engines. iam hoping there is no damage(or super minimum). iam planning on fixing the engine by doing this.

"they tack welded a bolt to the base of the pan and used a pull tool. they had to weld the bolt in three areas to straighten it out. They did this with the oil in the pan. it took 11/2hrs"

supersayianjim
4th May 2009, 12:46 PM

so my harness finally gets here(this is on monday). the guy sent it out on saturday from n.c.(priority mail really does work). so i get to work. start at 4pm on monday afternoon. work 24 hrs straight to tuesday afternoon and still not done. i need a radiator hose that ****ing fits.(the neck on the lower rb rad spout is weird).

anyway got most of the stuff done. had to have some help putting the actuall engine in the car. other than that this is a solo project.
tired to test the car and to get it to turn over but not yet. i have power to the fuel pump and the ecu. but when i turn the key the starter wont crank.

other than that i had to cut more under the battery tray cause clearance for the intercooler pipes wasnt enough.

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/steeringrackhitsthis.jpg
the steering column hits this part of the dump pipe. iam a moron to a point. instead of using my new die grinder(which was in the box till this happened)
i used my trusty dremel. then after a bit it fried(totally, and literally) so sparks were going off inside the thing.
http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/smokking.jpg

r.i.p. my dremel. maybe b&d makes garbage tools now. my cordless drill is stuck in the drill in position?? what happened to this company??

so i get the engine hooked up and ready yo go

and this ****ing hole gave me problems.
http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/stubbornhold.jpg

That's pretty basic wiring. You need to just go through it all and do it quality. Wire the the starter trigger into the ignition switch. Wire up a relay for your ignition power, and hook up your reverse light wire to the reverse sensor.

any clue as to where on the car might this stuff be??
-under dash
-fuse box(engine bay)
-fuse box in car

I haven't really read about your swap/car or the specifics, but if you can't figure out the oem wiring you can always wire up your own stuff. Test which wire coming off the ignition switch gets 12v only when the key is on start, tee into and run that wire to the small terminal on your starter.

well i finally got the damn car running (last thursday). seems i used a turbotimer harness for a (300zxtt) it wasnt compatable with my car but the wires hooked up. and the comp list listed (s13-guess in japan only).

so i finally go the thing running. first few daYZ had a vacuam leak or 2. but it still pulled.
http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/initialsetup.jpg

this was my initiaL setup. so i had to cut the ribbing in the hood.
http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/fabbingthehood.jpg

made the hood noticably lighter. i didn't install a rad fan(yet) ive been doing research and i think iam going with a large single one from a old school turbo diesel benz(from pick and pull)

also my exhaust had to get clocked by like 2 inches to be full 3 through.
http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/beforepipecorrection.jpg

and heres after. not bad for $20.00

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/aftercorrection2.jpg

my front sway bar is also hitting my oil pan(none told me that would happen. anyway i NEED some gauges. i would like to know if iam rich or lean. since i got my exhaust finished iam spitting flames periodically(which i think is the ****)

my swap is complete.

drives pretty good. had an overheating problem(in traffic) but i worked it out. its a sled out of the hole(19year old bushlings, and open diff) but an energy suspension master kit and a v-lsd should fix that.but from a roll iam a formadible foe!!

it does need a paint job but iam getting a real(real metal not that fiberglass ****)s13 front end. so the paint is going to be off for a while. thats the very last thing i will work on.
aside from the front end,i will do the suspension, and brake/lug modification.
but all in all its a great car. starts up all the time and aside from the dying brake pads trouble free(for now)!!

so finally after months of sartving and looking for a cheap s13 swap i hit jackpot. found it on craigslist in iowa(not far from dmi. for......

$500.00 jumped on it,and brought it 2 dayz later. went to pick it up and the guy was nice enough to help me hook it up. the fenders are noticably lighter than the 240sx ones. and the headlights are weird??

the high beams are h3 and the lows and fogs are (who the **** knows) havent found a size for them yet. luckily the low beams work. i have the double projector lights.

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/doubleprojector.jpg

i want to run hid's on the low beams but i have to find the size first. the fenders fit perfectly. and since he ran a sr the bumber support was already cut.

well it's time to update. iam way behind schedule. and iam approx 5-6 thousand away from finishing this to my liking(including a turbo upgrade, paint and what not). stashed it away for winter but still buying parts and getting ready for summer.

ordered a turbo dumppipe from e-gay. But it suck because it hits the steering rack because it's for a lhd car.

Also picked up an uncracked dashboard(thanks again p+p that is for a hud).

and as you can see from the side by side comparison, the 14 seats loves youre ass more.

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/1413seatcomparo.jpg

i switched the bolts and washers from the 13 and 14 to screw and fit. the swap itself wasn't hard just the fabbing of the seatbelt holes with the dremel was time consuming.

i recommend this upgrade for any 13 owner..

up next

-motor pull(for the proper r32 crossmember)i have a cefiro on it now
-turbo/fuel upgrade
-rear diff
-5 lug swap
-z32 upgrade..

well it's time to decide on the next clutch iam going to use.. when i got the car the clutch that came with it had a lot of meat left on it. so i let it stay.

now i have a slight rear main seal leak and i plan on pulling the motor next month(if i can find a r32 crossmember at a fair price). but heres the clutch that came with the car and that is in it now.. not slipping now or anything. just time for CHANGE..

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/anotherlift.jpg

i was looking at these 3 alternatives.. a gtr guy in canada said that this one had a heavy pp and it over time unbalanced the crankshaft(never heard that before though)

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=390174975576&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

and this one is a good clutch. but is hard on the drivetrain.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=390191646038&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

and i was looking at this one because it's namebrand. but i did want a ceramic disc.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=350277445795&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

any experence?? takers??

well i went with a f1 clutch kit(yeah i know).

so it was time to upgrade some stuff.

-the steering rack had had it so it had to be swapped with a "hicas" unit i got for $40.00 off craigslist(it looks brand new).

-got a full urethane kit
-a new oem oil pan'
-a n1 oil pump
-5 lug swap and a z32(front only) brake kit
-j-30 diff swap into s13 pumpkin
-z32 brake master cylinder
-hid 10,000 install
-wahlboro fuel pump install
-oil cooler kit
-rattle can the front end($20.00 a CAN)
-GTR GRILLE(for the oil cooler)
-fabb up a better intercooler mount..
-ss brake lines

so it's time to start the phase 2 of my project. these mods aren't intended on making it go faster(sans the lsd and bigger tires) but more efficently. new rack and bushlings etc. coilovers are going to come in the future as i don't have a grand to drop at a moments notice(would be nice though).

started off with the fuel pump.. nothing was wrong with my rb unit,it worked fine. but i do plan to upgrade later. so i got a wahl unit. i had one before on my mk3 supra. and it didn't work out so great(drank a lot of voltage). so iam hoping to have better luck this time..

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/oem240sxfuelpump.jpg

no it's not pee
http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/noitsnotpeeitsgas.jpg

and the finished product. wasn't hard. just had to splice 2 wires and push it down on the holder.

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/wahlpump.jpg

also picked up some z32 caps(front) and had some red paint left over so figured i'd give it a coat. a lot of it got nicked/chipped during install. so iam going to do again after there finally mounted and driving..

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/paintingthecaps.jpg

also cracked open my j30 diff.. iam going to use the s13 pumpkin as i don't want to **** around with the driveshaft and mounting points. i don't have the proper year axels(i have a post 95(i think) so iam going to use the 13 axels in the mean time..

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/takingoutj30lsd.jpg

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/readytocomeoutdiff.jpg

i also got a hid kit from these guys. https://www.ddmtuning.com/index.php?p=cart

shipping was slow as ****. but it was $50.00 total.. so the so the japs have some weird headlight bulbs. so i got a h1 and planned to fabb it to fit..

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/SL732086.jpg

got them in the low beam housing. but could not get them to point up as high as i needed them to. might have to remove the glare shield. but either way way better than halogen..

then it was off to the garage and jackstands(for a few weeks)

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/SL732097.jpg

needed these goodies bad.

all booted and end-linked up

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/newsteeringrackreadytoroll.jpg

got some rear blanks (se 5 lug) for $20.00 a piece.

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/newrotors.jpg

started on the bmc(really dirty). it's a automatic and from what i hear the auto booster has greater force than the manual one?? iam running z32 front and ss lines on all 4 and keeping the stock rears with a z32 bmc(well see what happens..)

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/240vsz32.jpg

this slowed me down for 2 days. this 5 SIDED HEX stopping progress. even the guys at autozone(where i got it from) didn't have one. i finally went to nissan and one of the techs had one.

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/a5sidedhexnut.jpg

got some assiatance on how the brake pads went in. as this is my first time doing brakes..

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/lockedandloaded.jpg

also had to borrow a socket for my front hub swap(apparently the mm isn't the same as on the rear)

22nd July 2010, 07:48 PM
well the ****ing g35(sedan) wheels don't fit upfront. so i have to track down some z32 wheels. and the diff is making a wining sound when i drive the thing. i already have it put back together but have to find time to post my build..

supersayianjim
25th July 2010, 05:22 PM
yes the benefits of not fitting youre wheels properly(offset is a *****).

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/SL732101.jpg

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/SL732102.jpg

and even with spacers(i would later find out). that the wheels would then clear the brakes. but would not turn(wtf).

supersayianjim
25th July 2010, 05:28 PM
so now it's time to pull the mill out..

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/pullingther.jpg

when using the picker you have to position the chain for an almost even weight transfer.. the tranny was tilted too far back to clear the front of the car. so i said **** it and just seperated them right there.

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/dropandheave.jpg

secured the tranny because i didn't want it running around the garage..

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/SL732105.jpg

now it's time to remove the clutch and flywheel. i got this chain wrench from autozone a year ago. a excellent purchase as this makes it so much easier(doing it alone) to torque and loosen up the bolts from the rear of the engine.

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/SL732106.jpg

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/SL732108.jpg

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/SL732109.jpg

the clutch looked chewed to ****. but it still held(barely)

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/SL732110.jpg

this looks much better

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/SL732111.jpg

and the rear main seal leak culprit. i think this block metal did a great job keeping out the leaking secrections..

supersayianjim
25th July 2010, 05:39 PM
now it's on to my nemesis from the last time i had this engine out. i was determined to beat this because i got a new oil pump(n1) and i wanted to change the front main seal before it started to leak.

the clearance behind the gear is so tight(more than 6 asian virgins) so the pullers in the store wouldn't fit. i could only get the head of a screwdriver behind it.

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/notenoughclearance-1.jpg

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/the****ingproblem-1.jpg

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/SL732115-1.jpg

i had a plan and would come back to this. going for something easier now.
i decided to dremel out the old pilot bushling. as the remover tool(i loaned one from the autostore) didn't fit.

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/oldpilotbushlingdidntcoop.jpg

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/dremeledthatbitch.jpg

supersayianjim

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/oldvsnew.jpg

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/yumminewrack.jpg

well i got this steering bushling replacement.

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/wenttoputthison.jpg

didn't know where it went. and can't imagine installing it with the engine in the car..

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/inthislocationanditkickedmyass.jpg

but this thing kicked my ass.. you have to turn the bolts at an exact angle(2 13 and 2 12mm) and it stripps so easily and it took forever to turn(air tools just made it worse). after an hr of loosening the bolts i just said **** it and just tightend them up.

so now onto the toe arms.. when things go right these presses are a gem to have..

now iam test mounting my oil cooler...

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/mountedoilcooler.jpg

wanted it around the gtr grille so the airflow can be functional..

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/SL732130.jpg

lookin good man, I love this thread. I am jealous. Also, Why did you go with the lame ass 17" g35 wheels? Get a set of the factory 18s like I had, they clear my brembos which I believe are bigger than the z32 brakes. I sold my 18s for 350 bucks.

supersayianjim

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/j-30leftkaright3.jpg

the j30 teeth are a little thicker. and i wanted the j30 gear ratio so i didn't keep the ka ring gear..(a ****ing problem)

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/SL732181.jpg

the rings i kept them in order that they came out in.. insert the diff in the pumpkin first then slide these in(way easier than putting in as a whole).

so i got a new oil pump and to install it i had to remove the timing belt cog. i tried when i got the engine to remove this. but it was tougher than balls. and the clearance behind is impossible to get a good puller behind. so were going to try to tap and die it.

never tapped and died and it's a good kit to have.

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/tappingandding.jpg

modified a puller with holes and crossed my fingers..

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/somuchforce.jpg

tighter than youre virgin cousin. and still no budge..

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/andthe****erstillwontcomeoff.jpg

****ing wow.. i was told by some to torch it and it would expand. then others said it would damage the crankshaft.. so i will put it back together get a new cog later on and cut this pos off..

going the easy route and using a tire, didn't need to flip the whole engine..

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/leanbacl.jpg

the bolts had to be taken out in sequence and put in sequence. i had my trusty rb fsm.

using the good stuff.

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/thegoodstuff.jpg

oil cooler tree adapter.

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/oilcoolertree.jpg

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/oilcoolerset-up.jpg

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/oilcoolerfan.jpg

well i removed the oil cooler kit. after a start up and it started to leak(even with teflon tape). and i don't wan't to loose my engine because my oiling kit is faulty. so i will have to rethink this oil cooler thing..

my horn sounded like ****. so i grounded it to a better location.

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/regroundedfannowtheywork.jpg

now on to the rear rotors..

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/SL732185.jpg

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/justneedtobleedthese.jpg

compressing in the rear brakes are a bit tricky.. they are screw type(not push type. like i learned the hard way.(had to cut out a brake(pusher) )

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/hadtocutoutthecheapoautozonebrakecapcompressor.jpg

but for the s13 rears you need this thing

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/thisdidthetrick.jpg

then you just twist and shout...

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/twistandshout.jpg

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/SL732215.jpg

now when you install these ****s there is a system to get these on.

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/SL732221.jpg

then you have to bleed

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/SL732222.jpg

now the progress stops.. even with front spacers(x2 each wheel) the wheels and tires don't turn.(**** it all)

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/damnneedotherfrontwheels.jpg

so iam on the hunt for z32 wheels. and in the mean time i would like to get an intercooler and i located a sc tranny i have to pick up tomorrow..

millertime

it's bushing, not bushling

DarkSlide
29th July 2010, 04:32 AM
you might not need z32 wheels depending on what version of the stock alloys you have if you have alloys. one variant clears the brakes.

supersayianjim
30th July 2010, 07:18 PM
it's not only clearing the brakes. it's also clearing the shock tower i need to also worry about..

supersayianjim
6th September 2010, 03:39 PM
well now it's time to finish this operation(this time). finally got some more funds
-some z32 brakes. and had to get a hold of some 225/50/16. as the 60's that came with the tires didn't mount. went to the junk yard and got 2.(the front left one is missing a cord and needs to be replaced shortly.

-also ordered a greddy oil cooler tree, a godspeed swaybar set, and a new icebox.

-so i went to u-pull-it and got another j-30 diff with the proper output shafts(the 3 sets of 2 bolts) like the 13 ones so iam going to use my 13 axels.

-i also ordered a front and rear underbrace, along with a rear upper bar.

supersayianjim
6th September 2010, 03:52 PM
iam all about the box(the other box)

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/boxshot.jpg

these are ****ing thick

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/****ingthick.jpg

had the same problem with this pumpkin like the last one as the ds bolts didn't want to move. but i got an app for that!!

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/sawthebastards.jpg

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/sawthe2.jpg

also picked these up as i need them to make the diff work.froze them overnight. just incase they didn't want to go in easy.

the 30 input shafts are longer. but other than that look just like the open ones(but you can't use the open ones on the j30)

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/j30tops13bottom.jpg

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/j-top.jpg

and finally got it together(needed new output seals). but ready to get stuck in.

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/newsealsandreadytorock-j30take2.jpg

didn't use a abs driveshaft either(like the myth says) and the thing fit perfectly.

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/beholdididitwithoutacustomdriveshaft.jpg

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/dosentlooktight2.jpg

had to dremel some plastic to get the rear bar to fit.

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/stiff.jpg

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/reallystiff.jpg

so still leary on doing brakes the first time. and after finding deposits in my line. i wanted some kind of better one man bleeder. so someone told me about this and id figure i would give it a whirl.

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/gotthistogettheairout.jpg

yummi new box..

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/newicebox.jpg

got front new oem lca's for 50(for the pair) so had to take the spindles off to hammer out the old bj.

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/takeitofftogetitoff.jpg

then it was onto mounting the swar bars. then i was in for a disappointment(luckily i didn't throw the stockers away)

the bigger bar was too close to the rb oil pan. even with the sr20store spacers.

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/2tight.jpg

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/2tight2.jpg

even using the supplied brackets and bushlings failed..

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/SL732291.jpg

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/swaybarbracket.jpg

so i had to go back to the stock bars with the urethane bushlings.

supersayianjim

and now back from under the knife..

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/finallyreadytoroll.jpg

my wheel fittiment issue is solved. i had to run 5mm(one each side) spacer in the front because the strut need a little more room. but other than that i can roll again

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/z32with5mmspacerfront.jpg

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/clearanceissuesolved.jpg

well didn't have any tires on the rear z32 wheels that were the right size(need 245/45/26) so iam running the g35's on the rear(true staggered). they never had a prob with the rear wheels as i didn't upgrade the brakes back there.

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/g3517sintherear.jpg

so i get to rolling and sriving around. a few bugs. i had to raise up the intercooler(still to damn low). but i get a fuel leak the next day(wtf). comming from the gas tank area. right around the neck.

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/leakyoring.jpg

this cocksucker want's to leak all of a sudden. so i go to auto parts stores here in town and none has ever seen anything like it(of coruse). so i get a roll of gasket material thinking it was a gasket gone bad.

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/droopingfueltnk.jpg

luckily it was a o-ring. but of course none of the auto shops had the size. had to go to ace hardware to find what i needed. took a few hrs but problem averted.

-DRIVING IMPRESSION-

-The car feels a little more bouncy now over bumps. iam thinking it's because i have that tall rear 17 inch tire. and prob because iam still rocking stock sway bars(maybe) but coilovers are next on the list.

although the front is hella low(intercooler will scrape). so kinda leary on dropping any further on the front. would like to make the bigger swap bars fit(maybe i can do the rears not sure on the front one).

-i like the j30 diff. the gears are way way different. and i can drive on the highway in 4th. i have to emiminate the top speed limiter as now i'd hit that with no pro it seems(118-120).

-the f1 racing(egay) clutch is really really good ****(so far). i got the 6 puck and it clamps like a mofo. have to ease it out,and it still clamps like a unit 2x the price. i recommend this clutch to anyone who needs good quality at a cheapo price(KEYWORD SO FAR-still breaking clutch in) but so far so good.

-the gas mileage has went down since i did these mods(maybe the 17inch tires). or prob the j30 diff. no specific numbers yet but the gauge moves more than before i did the lug swap

-the brakes are ****ing wow.. i did ceramic pads for the z32 in the front. and organic s13 pads in the rear. no fade really and i can stop on a dime. i also give credit to the pain free brake bleeding because of the "mighty vac" a good tool everyone should have.

all in all a good modification and aside from the wheel fittiment and the diff debacle wasn't hard to pull off.

thanks burntz!!

so iam running super rich. i mean like donald trump or jay-z rich. and i heard that under the hood if the temps are high and if a turbo engine dosen't get enough freah cool air then this will also aid in the car running rich. i notice this on a hot as **** sunny day.

not sure about the domstic guys. but the cars in japan use 2 methods to combat this.

-make or run a cool air induction box
-or run some ducting from the front of the car to the air cone or maf.

theres also the hood scoop method, but id rather not cut up my hood.

so i went to ace hardware and got some dryer ducting, the smallest diameter i could find. i was torn between aluminum and the vinyl that i got. but i went with the vinyl as it was cheaper and easier to bend.

first was to relocate this fuse box out of the way. now i could not do this mod if i was running a side feed intercooler(so benefit to the non side feed ones).

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/SL732359.jpg

then i got some saw bits from the clearance rack at advance auto.

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/SL732360.jpg

wasn't big enough though so i had to improvise

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/SL732361.jpg

then used a dremel to smooth things over, after using long nose pliers.

Iam missing my gt2871r cause again i ran out of money. and with the turbo i was realistically looking at putting down 380-390whp at 15-17psi.

But that didn't happen. with this list i was hoping for over 300whp with the addition of the oil cooler kit to aid the ceramic turbo and keep it from grenading at 15+psi.

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/onlythisonewouldfit.jpg

I also got an intercooler piping kit and wanted to raise the intercooler core a few inches higher to stop scraping on the ground.

wiring this stuff is a chore and a pain. the boost controller i brought used. the the seller tried to pull a fast one on the power cord. so i had to wait a week for it to come in. but i really didn't finish installing the damn unit till a month later..

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/boostcontrolerinstal.jpg

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/boostcontrolrins2.jpg

then for the z32 there was splicing the maf. the wiring diagrams i got were easy. i used butt connectors. but iam planning on sodering them(i suck at that) next week.

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/splicingthemafwires.jpg

Then along the line i noticed the diaframs in my front right capilar and in my real left were leaking brake fluid(not a safe deal).

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/leakycalipar.jpg

then i went to autozone for a swap cause it was under warranty. and i went to the junkyard and sourced a not so high mileage rear cap..

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/newfrontcap.jpg

so i brought some 2.5 intercooler piping from e-gay. i got this set before and i am very happy with it. the t-clamps are of high quality..

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330422501172&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

and i cut and raised my pipes and i made a better center bracket i raised it by min 4" and taller is better in this case.

unfortunately the o rings that come with the d injectors are too thick for a good seal. Luckily the rings from the ka engines are a direct fit.

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/oemonleft-d-bagonright.jpg

Then it was onto pulling the old injectors. Getting this effin intake manifold off with the engine in the car id doable. But it is not enjoyable..

Then it's removing the old injectors. i left the fuel rail attached for ease of install. Every time you pull off an injector some fuel will spew out. make sure to remove your gas cap to relieve pressure.

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/pullingtheoleinjectors.jpg

Some of the old o rings need to be pried out with a screwdriver.

how high does the load go on your tuning software? highest i see is 79...

here is a stock fuel map off an evo but added higher load capabilities since im making more power
http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k266/evane_01/fuelmap-1.jpg

usually on boosted cars you will have load up and over 100%

typically 100 and below is when the engine is in vacuum and no boost...when your at 0 vacuum and just getting into boost that will be when your at 100% load

millertime

On nistune when you load stock bin it will show over 100 load scale. When resize injectors it automatically adjust load and tp scales. I can adjust the load scales and always add more. Right now with blind basemap he is idling around 9 or 10. Hopefully can get down there soon and get it idling to actually attempt at a few pulls. PITA using nistune through eprom burner but it works.

Thats called kPa or a kiloPascal unit.

100kPa is converted to 1 bar of pressure or 14.5psi. This is the air pressure at sea level. So 200kPa would be converted to 14.5psi of positive pressure over sea level pressure.

what did you do with the KA?

millertime
13th December 2010, 06:30 PM
you either find unused vacuum nipples after the throttle body or make your own.
or you could t the BOV and your boost gauge together and run the boost controller off one of their sources. The BOV needs to be able to see vacuum, but the boost controller doesn't, and the boost gauge isn't that important if you know your ecu was set up right and the boost controller and wastegate is working properly. You definitely want the FPR and MAP sensor to have their own source.

edit: if you removed and blocked off your emissions components, you've probably got a few usable vacuum/boost source points.

then don't worry about that, I included it in case you did. Since you only have the FPR, just make sure it has it's own vacuum/boost source.

So after selling some dsm **** i had left over to a fellow in kc. We started talking about well... dsm stuff. and he mentioned the hx holset turbo's. Ive heard of these many times from the dsm guys who swear by them and the fact that dodge uses them.

So later i go do a short read on them. apparently they have a good spool and use minimum boost. So looking fo an alternative to a costly gt2871r. I looked on cl here in kc for one. and WTF!! i find one for $75.00. Internal wasgated also, because i don't want to run an external because the pain of more custom pipe(i try to keep that down). So i met the fellow and jewed him down to $60.00.EFFING YEA!!

So this turbo has no shaft play and looks good. if i had myy engine out now i would install it. But iam going to order a rebuild kit and play it safe.

the manifold side looks exactly like the stock rb one. I just need to fabb up a downpipe for the hotside looking at this.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230538894916&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

only problem is there is no divorce for the wastegate. So iam going to have to further customize it to fit.. But still cheaper than $1,300.00. this turbo should complement my 650cc injec well. and with my nistune and this side mount intake iam also planning on buying.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280605389025&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

I should be at my goal of about 380-400whp..

well it's been a while. been working 1st shift lately(i hate 1st shift). and haven't had the time to do anything really but **** and sleep aside from that.

and sadly because of a leaky seal and me being too busy to hear the gears go. the tranny on the wagon took a dump. so instead of dropping $500.00 coin(provided i could find a tranny). i sent my baby to the great scrapyard in the (ground) sky.

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/car%20picks%20and%20videos/sosad.jpg

it was a sad day, but they gave me a cool $530.00 for that wag. but on with the show...

supersayianjim
18th May 2011, 06:48 PM
so now iam ****ed. Untill the lex is done i have to use the rb as a daily.

And while trying to figure out the nistune wiring hookup, i was pressed for time and switched my injectors and maf back to stock(yes it's 180hp slow again).

And at the price of premium this $100 a week for gas is for the birds.. i plan on picking up another suby wagon around the end of the summer before winter. fuji heavy indusrties makes a good product, and i will buy again..

so heres a recap on what ive been doing..

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/371299522949_0_0.jpg

made a actual vent for better air flow. started out with vynil dryer ducting. But then went with alumn.

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/371299492229_0_0.jpg

now i'd like time to make my intake shield in the engine..

so after that ****-sucker carl h jipped me on a mail tune(i will never do that crap again. it was time to finally attempt to get **** started on tuning this damn thing. for a total package of $580.00 i got a nifty device called a nistune.

drop down menu, i can adjust my fuel maps, afr, yadda yadda. i still haven't had the time to sit down and read the manuals. and the fact i need my car to drive everyday. iam using it now as a monitoring tool.

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/nistunemonitoring.jpg

and the setup using my nifty laptop windshield mount.

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/incarsetup.jpg

But it wasn't all easy. Took me a week to get it hooked up, i was rushed and was reading the damn ecu pinout backwards..

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/rb20ecuwiringdiagram.jpg

so arter 3 splice attempts i finally got it.. the only bad thing is i have a pre odb car. so i had to splice a consult cable into the harness before the ecu, using this plug.

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/labeledplugwires.jpg

so i could get this adapter to my ecu

Carl H was always a cool guy when I talked to him. Weird.

He WAS a cool guy. He did my harness just fine. It was my chip service that went to the shitter. He couldn't get it right. Then wanted more money for more chips. His customer service turned to ****. I understand if you do a business on the side. But if you can't ever get back to your customers, try another field. Iam not one for dragging peoples names through the mud. But i feel i wasted $150.00 getting this chip tune.

Asked for a refund, and of course no.

supersayianjim
18th May 2011, 07:28 PM
so i got something that no s13 owners really get from what i can see.. SOME DAMN WEATHER-STRIPPING!!! 3 weeks from japan(ya overnighted)

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/newweatherstripping.jpg

can't really tell from this pic but it does seal better with the door closed, and it was an easy install.

supersayianjim
18th May 2011, 07:35 PM
so other than my oil cooler taking a dump on me(didn't put teflon tape on a thread). so i had a scare as the crankcase was drained. But luckily nothing to damage the engine..

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/oilspill-1.jpg

i spent a lot of money on this oil cooler setup so far so iam laying off it for now. But i might try it again. I have bad luck with oil coolers(on my supra,z32)But again spent so much coin on this setup..

so other than super bald front tires(getting replaced with 225/45/16 next week). and i think i will throw my 16's on the rear when i get some tread for them. the 17's are too bouncy. getting some coils next month.

supersayianjim
15th June 2011, 11:28 PM
so iam trying to test fit the hx on my rb before i go ahead with the install. and i hit a ****ing "****-block"

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/biggerthanstockintake.jpg

The stock intake tube isn't big enough for the ex. so now i need curved heavy duty l shaped, that is 3" dia on one end and 3".8m on the other. and 1ft and 2" long.

anyone has any suggestions??

supersayianjim
15th June 2011, 11:29 PM

supersayianjim
18th June 2011, 12:39 AM
so i finally got these damn things on. wasn't easy. Had no help, instructions, and i was on a time crunch.. :headchop:

so here we go. it's the patient.

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/thepatient.jpg

and heres the plan of action.

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/planofattack.jpg

the coils look sturdy. But then again this is my very first set so wtf do i know?? The fronts weren't hard to do/adjust. the backs i have to remove to spin the bottom part for height adjustment. Luckily i got the rears dead even on the first try.

heres the front oem units. They were heavy as ****

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/thebeatupstockers.jpg

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/thebeatupstockers2.jpg

the front coils were way lighter. So this takes off my lbs bottom line of the car also..

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/sbscomparo.jpg

supersayianjim
18th June 2011, 12:52 AM
so for reference i lined up my dinosaur oem units and the coils. the stockers really were gone.

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/sbscomparo2.jpg

and heres the rears

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/sbscomparo3.jpg

the lip on the rears was kinda longer. so i pionted them facing the tires. Hopefully this made no difference on things..

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/extralipontherearone.jpg

So i got the fronts installed first. looks like a good fit.

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/installed.jpg

installation is easy and dosen't take rocket science hence why i didn't do a walkthrough like that.

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/researchingthemathforthefront.jpg

But measurements were crucial, even though i still didn't know what i was doing.. Just wanted a length from the bottom of the fender to the ground..

and after some trial and error i think i got it. last i checked my rears were at

25 and a half.. and i got the fronts lower than that.(on friday afternoon before alignment)

heres pics of the car when i first put them on.(thursday night)

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/after1-1.jpg

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/after1-1.jpg

So i went to tires plus friday and got it aligned. Which you need to do anythime you eff with suspension components. and heres the before on the top and the after on the bottom..

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/alignmentsheetbeforeaft.jpg

looks like they did an effing great job. so tire wear shouldnt be an issue. and i am at a lowerd height where iam happy at. Yeah my bumper lip scrapes more now.But i corner better.

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/after2-1.jpg

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/after2-2-1.jpg

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/after2-3.jpg

So i didn't have time to set this dampening knobs. But there is some moderate bounce. Iam okay with it(for now). But so far the coils kick ass..

supersayianjim
18th June 2011, 03:20 PM
so while i was installing my coils, i noticed my exhaust pipe slot was getting singed badly.(i spit flames like the bad mother****er i am).

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/damnflames.jpg

so i thought "what mc-guvyer do" so i got some not so thick metal and fabbed up a shield..

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/flameshield.jpg

it's not jdm carbon fiber. But it's functional to keep my bumper from catching on fire...

supersayianjim
24th July 2011, 05:02 PM
well like i thought my turbo seal went out finally(on the coldside) so it's time for me to put this damn hx on. i want to do a rebuild on it. but the "lazy monsters' won't allow me.)

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/hxexposed.jpg

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/hxexposed2.jpg

supersayianjim
4th August 2011, 12:19 PM
so the minds at china have finally come up with a sudo-cheapo alternative to the $500+ front facing plenum solution.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/RB20DET-RB20-SKYLINE-R32-TURBO-INTAKE-MANIFOLD-PLENUM-/140587492484?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item20bbaae484

Called up godspeed a few times and talked to ken about this. apparently it will clear a s13 hood. and the plenum is made for the stock rb20 throttle body. if you want to run the q45 you need an adapter plate..

so iam on board. I picked up one this week.

iam going to recirc my bov on the hotside for easy access..

supersayianjim
28th August 2011, 01:58 PM
so haven't updated for a while. i did snag that intake plenum. installed it, didn't get it hosed up right so i removed it and put the stocker back on for the moment. i will come back to the plenum last...

so been busy with this (not so) excellent adventure to get this hx trubo finally bolted on.

my stock turbo was oil and water cooled. so i blocked off the water bolt going to the block. and i recirced a y assembly in the back of the engine block.

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/SANY0018.jpg

But, first i got the exhaust manifold off.. the gasket had pretty much had it. But the ports weren't cracked so this bad boy was reused..

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/SANY0015.jpg

and mani removed from the block

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/SANY0014.jpg

and heres a compaRO of the stocker..

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/SANY0014.jpg

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/sidebysidecomparo.jpg

so after running Around town, i couldn't find a oil feed line with a banjo on each end. so i had to use the oem unit. was careful not to overly bend and kink this damn thing..

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/SANY0025.jpg

the coolant line on the side of the block was a pain. i had to go to ace hardware and find a bolt to plug it up.(after spilling most of the damn rad coolant.

so it's now on to the main attraction.i have a guy at a local dealership that does all my welding and he knows his ****. super cheap and good welds.

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/SANY0021.jpg

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/SANY0022.jpg

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/SANY0024.jpg

i was very very pleased with the welding job and the fact that this cost me almost peanuts i can't beat it with a 12 inch weiner..

so it's time to bolt this bad boy. after a trip to autozone for some curved hose for the oil drain. i mount this. keep in mind i brought a oil hose kit from egay with the banjo bolt that i needed for the hx.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/M12x1-5-Turbo-Oil-Feed-Line-Kit-VOLVO-SAAB-TD04HL-36-/250878907458?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3a698c5442

essentally $28 beans for a freaking bolt.. WTF!!!!

MadmaX
28th August 2011, 02:12 PM
wtf indeed

supersayianjim
28th August 2011, 02:12 PM
so no going back now. time to keep this going.

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/SANY0026.jpg

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/SANY0027.jpg

so my next problem was getting a downpipe together..

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/dp1.jpg

crunched for time because of work and whatnot this dragged out a few days.
originally i got one made. but missed the flange for the rest of the exhaust by a few inches. so i drove around a few days with an open dp. loud as ****, but i did cound like a cummings truck..

so i finally got time i parked my car by my weld guy. and i carefully test fitted, while he welded the bend i needed for final clearance..

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/SANY0015-1.jpg

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/SANY0016-1.jpg

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/SANY0018-1.jpg

and finally some header wrap to keep the temps down.

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/SANY0019-1.jpg

sounds like a jet now. had to upgrade to pretty much all t clamps as ringworms don't like 15+psi.

well after i had some vacuam leaks since i didn't recirc my bov. since then i have fixed these things and the thing runs great.

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/SANY0032.jpg

had to use my 1jz ic pipe for this also.

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/SANY0034.jpg

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/SANY0033.jpg

so now pretty much iam done engine wise. just have to install my injectors/afm and have it tuned. and re attempt to install my intake plenum. want to keep the bottom end and not get so crazy.

supersayianjim
28th August 2011, 02:22 PM
best mod to this car evar!!!!!! my spool time has been moved back as expected. But i can easily get to 20 psi now, where the ceramic took for-****ing-ever.

it's kinda weird. it's like my car is faster than the mph it's showing?? my speedo is off by 6mph(more). But even when i monitor it with gps. 80 dosent feel like 80. and when i get to 100 it's like i have to put in more brake work to stop than before. i start to see spool at 2,500rpms. nit sure yet if my greddy ebc can controll the wastegate to regulate psi.

ive herd it can't. ive also heard that this turbo wouldn't spool past 15psi but that myth was busted. car is way faster attributted i think to just one bottle neck in the downpipe at the flange 3"<2.5" vs lots of downpipe restriction with my last stocker.

i didn't use my rebuild kit as i figured since there was no shaft play this turbo was good. and it is. i plan on getting a hx45 for my 1jz sometime next year.. these are good/cheap/proven turbos. and i recomment these to anyone in the market for an upgrade!!!

so iam ready for a tune tune tune. iam wanting to stick these 650cc's in so i can finally run some e85 and see what happens.

so if this engine dosen't blow up now iam just putting in $1,300 for some etc things and some paint and this will finally be done....

supersayianjim
28th August 2011, 02:35 PM
so i figured i would do a compression test to see where my engine is at now. maybe hve cause for concern, or i did this wrong.

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/compressiontest.jpg

so when i did this i removed the spark plug of the cylinder that i was testing, but left the other ones in. not sure if this would cause an issue as this video had all the plugs out.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fSTyn5Uuuiw

and also i had everything hooked up except the intercooler piping and disconnected the maf. did 4 short turnovers on each cylinder.\

front
1-92
2-100
3-90
4-90
5-90
6-102

kinda low as i hear a brand new rb has 160 across the board, ive also heard that some gauges read differently than others.

i know my ringlands aren't going out as there is never any oil in my cylinders(sans the bad old turbo). and the car sounds and feels strong. but is it dying?? hope not..

supersayianjim
7th September 2011, 11:41 PM
650cc injectors are in and car runs rich as ****. trying to use nistune to compensate. a good friend of mine couldn't get the tune finished due to running out of time and damn police interference..

Lepa
7th September 2011, 11:52 PM
Do another compression test and dump a little bit of oil in before testing it, if the numbers read higher it is infact your rings. 120 and lower would be a "worried" area. 140+ is ok depending on the compression of your motor.

^^i tried this a 2nd time with the tp open and the fuel pump disconnected. And read the same numbers. How much oil should I use? The chiltons said dump a teaspoon in there

So took leps advice today( no I didn't try extenze). I put some oil in my first cylinder, attached the compressor and...... 90psi dry 148 wet. So my ringlands on all 6 are weak, meaning I got 90psi to toasted. Maybe I will rebuild a new engine next year of get another jdm replacement? Either way iam gonna drive this till it blows up. The weird thing is the car still dosent smokes and still pulls\holds 22psi just fine. Maybe that's why last year I only did 185hp?

so tuning the nistune, and finally got a map smoothed out. v8 tiger tried to take a shot at it, and helped explain it a little better. didn't get to run the dyno yesterday:cry:

but car is running/pulling good today, although top wot is at 9.7afr(too rich).
next week hopefully i will get a good map ironed out.

So been a while. been focusing on getting a worthwile daily. after 2 duds(including a rhd suby leggy wagon). finally got something reliable. now time to take the rb off manditory daily duty.

so after the cyl compression test and 30k miles since my swap was complete. it's time for old reliable to get a rebuild this summer. But first i have to iron out some issues. notably with the boost..

so my turbo started leaking. didn't do a rebuild before i installed it because i didn't need one then. it needs one now. luckily my good friend and hx turbo guru austin had a hx30w kit.

But first, the fun stuff of getting it off. which with a 17mm cresent wrench makes life simpler.

so after a quick trip to nebraska, and a quick disassembly. the sludge build up was apparent..

mr austin happend to have a 22psi wastegate on hand.

i ordered a brand new garett unit. but thinking 22psi might be pushing it on the stock bottom end?? well the engine has seen worse..

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/supersayianjim/project%20s-rb/hx30wtake2.jpg

and hx30w TAKE 2. and now to fabb up and mount a RB25DET charge pipe. courtesy also of mr austin. Why rb25?? because the bov port isn't facing upwards and isn't making a hole in my damn hood. and finally reunited with my greddy type 2.

-new intercooler, the one on it now got bent
-looking for a pignose lip
-leak down test
-and making a diffuser for under the front bumper to protect the intercooler from those texas streets..

oh, and lookie here. scouted the kc junkyard and found a s13 with these babies. they look brand new. any silvia owner knows these can be a pain when they loose ground and stop working properly...

Why don't you get a greddy or even a freddy intake manifold?

Why don't you get a greddy or even a freddy intake manifold?

i have a freddy intake manifold(for sale in my f/s thread). too much hassle to put in . have to change the throttle cable, extend a plug or 2. i mean i have everything you need. just want to keep the intake stock for now,(for now).

so, it's update time. i seen this on a turbo z31 and decided to get it and use it because it would be better than some weak mesh to keep debris and bugs off my intake cone.

so i sold a maf to a fellow about a few weeks ago. and he informed me that you can swap an altenator from a 95-97 nissan quest/merc villager (yes ford did make nissans minivans. into ka engines and sr20's (with an adapter).

there is 110v to 100v (on the rb20 stocker). so an extra 10v can be had doing this and the plugs are the same and it's almost plug and play.. i was still having power issues even though my battery was new and my alt checked out. so this was worth a shot...

so i went to the junkyard and pulled a 95 merc villager alt for $25.00 beans..

http://i1062.photobucket.com/albums/t493/supersayianjim2/project%20s-rb%202/stockprerebuildquestalt.jpg

i then took it to a local shop that rebuilds alts. and that cost me $50.00 bones..

so i got it back all cleaned up and working like new.
First i had to drill out the bottom bracket hole, because the rb bolt is smaller than the ka bolt(which you will need one to make this work.) the ka bolt is also longer than the rb one.

http://i1062.photobucket.com/albums/t493/supersayianjim2/project%20s-rb%202/drilloutholetobigger.jpg

smaller rb bolt

http://i1062.photobucket.com/albums/t493/supersayianjim2/project%20s-rb%202/smallerrb20bolt.jpg

they have almost the same dimensions.

http://i1062.photobucket.com/albums/t493/supersayianjim2/project%20s-rb%202/questleftrb20right.jpg

the bottoms will fit in perfectly. the problem are the top adjusting bolts..

http://i1062.photobucket.com/albums/t493/supersayianjim2/project%20s-rb%202/questbracket.jpg

and heres the rb

http://i1062.photobucket.com/albums/t493/supersayianjim2/project%20s-rb%202/rbbracket.jpg

you can defitenly and easiily make the quest alt work but you need to do 2 things first..

you need to fabb up a bracket for the top adjustment screw..

to do this i eyeballed it and drilled 2 holes..

http://i1062.photobucket.com/albums/t493/supersayianjim2/project%20s-rb%202/thecustombracket.jpg

and viola. this is what your end result should look like.

http://i1062.photobucket.com/albums/t493/supersayianjim2/project%20s-rb%202/questaltmounted.jpg

the 2nd thing is you need to drill out or replace the positive battery cable hole..

http://i1062.photobucket.com/albums/t493/supersayianjim2/project%20s-rb%202/drilloutpositivecable.jpg

and heres what we have now..

http://i1062.photobucket.com/albums/t493/supersayianjim2/project%20s-rb%202/andtheendresult.jpg

what used to be 12.9 at idle has jumpped up to 13.9(yea).
