Every self respecting Redneck really needs to have a jacked up 4x4 in order for his life to be complete. I am no different.

I first built this truck a couple of years ago out of about 4 pickups that we had accumulated. While the cab is an '85, the average model year of this truck is 1976. It was inspired by an old green '74 Chevy K20 that Dad had back when I was a kid and we both dearly loved.
Power is provided by a '69 12.5:1 .040 over 427 Big Block. That is why I run it on Propane since the octane is considerably higher than gas.

I've always wanted to find a better body to put on it since it's sooo rusty. I put it together with what I had at the time, though. Thanks to SCR, I found a decent body and since the weather is gonna be nice I thought I'd get started on the swap.
I had to wait a while to snag this tag number.

Anyone got a grille for a '77 GMC?
http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk117/fmstruck/100_0150.jpg
It's far from perfect, but the cab is not rusty at all. Corners and rockers are good and floor pans are good.

You can't see it, but the front fenders are rusty. I know it's been painted and I think someone put el cheapo or used fenders on it. Maybe they hit a deer or something, I don't know.

6th February 2009, 04:11 AM
My plan is to put another pair of el cheapo fenders on it, and paint it desert camo tan like a CUCV. Perhaps flat black, I don't know.

I scored a gauge cluster, an unbroken dash pad and a GMC grille from another buddy the other night so I installed all of that stuff. Apparently at some point the Start circuit of the ignition switch flamed out, so some moron decided it would be easier to hack in a pushbutton instead of replacing the ignition switch. I fixed that too.
The headliner was falling down, so I went to Wal Mart and got some tan material and re-covered it. The glue never works, so I used paper fasteners like these to hold it up. You just push them through and bend them over.
http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk117/fmstruck/ct2-25_brads.jpg
I also cut the hole in the floor for the Tcase shifter. The hump in the floor is way different than my old truck, so I had to bend the snot out of the shifter to make it work.

I never said there was anything wrong with it, but it had 3 sleeves already and would have taken 8 sleeves to make it a good one again. Since we had a good 454 block, it seemed the better part of wisdom to use it since we had no car to match the numbers of the 427 block, and thus no sentimental attatchment to it.

It makes sence to do what you did, I probly would have done the same thing.
About the only advantage to keeping the 427 would be 4 bolt mains, but I suppose the 454 might be a 4 bolt to. Would have cost more than it was worth to put 8 sleeves in to.
Hillbilly

I put sleeves in myself, and they're like $30 bucks and you can cut them in half and use on sleeve for 2 cylinders... and this particular car I'm talking about was one that was done where I work, not by me but another guy there who he's friends with... so it was cheaper in this situation. But yes, its normally like $100 to install a sleeve and hone the cylinder.

So lets see 496 with 4.56 axles. Are you trying to make me spend more money? You know I can't be on the short end of the stick. Hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, I guess its time for twin turbo on propane.

The California title was signed by the guy I bought it from. Unfortunately, I did not notice that until 6 months later and he moved. :doubt:

Update:
Motor is together in Long Block form and the valve train is together. I guess we decked more off of the block and planed more off the heads than I thought since the intake doesn't fit. Off to Schmidt Machine to have a bunch shaved off. No, Marty, no pictures. It's all bagged up and put away till I have time to finish it.

I wanted to put serpentine drive on the front, but the kit from GM is like $800 so I had to pass until I found this set of plates from Kwik Performance that takes a the serpentine mounts from a small block and adapts them to a big block.

You also have to remember to get a water pump for a 92^ 454 or it will be spinning backward and pumping no water.
Here's the link to the Kit.

Wow, what a moron. Me, that is. I got it running and got owned by the 3 keyway timing set. It ran, but wouldn't pull an old lady off a stool. I knew something wasn't right so I pulled the water pump and timing cover off and sure enough I had lined up the 0 keyway with the top gear instead of the 0 mark about 3 teeth away. It's a wonder it ran at all.

Martin
fmstruck
29th May 2009, 04:40 PM
Well I think they run about the same. I think the cubic inches make up for the fact that the 427 is 12.5:1. It seems kinda big, dumb and lazy though and not crispy like the 427 was.

Where are we at on this. I know your smarter than me but hank ran 1000 times better with more intial. Your old 427 had way more cylinder pressure so you didn't have as much intial timing because your mixture would fire much more quickly. I suggest bumping your timing to 25 and test driving to see if it makes a difference. Hank was big fat and lazy but now runs so much better I can't believe that was the only change.
fmstruck
8th June 2009, 12:05 PM
I bumped it up a bunch the other day. I don't really know how much, I just grabbed the dist and gave it a tug, but it runs a bunch better. I think I need to limit the total like you did.
