"Oh, im an engineer at kiewit"

we have this kid on the board who, as far as i know is a business college drop out, calling himself an engineer.
Now to the average person this may not seem like an offense at all. but to an engineering major, and not even an engineer in training yet, this is ridiculous.

i worked with engineers. i live with an engineer.

Spencer,
You have not graduated college. You have no degree. You are working with engineers and technicians that do have degrees. They make more money than you, they have been there longer.
No one here is going to believe that you have seniority over them.
Next time you ask for something from them, tell them to do it or they will get fired. I bet you will be the one fired. Make sense how you work FOR them?
At my old job i took orders from a senior project manager (certified professional electrical engineer). He took his orders from the the CEO and the president of the company.
So tell me, where do you fit into that equation?

It is a title that you earn. Saying you are an engineer in a room of engineers will get people pissed off at you. it trivializes what they have accomplished.

"tell them to do it or they will get fired"
you need to work on your people skills.
pretty sure if i need something ASAP I get it. Plain and simple, because if they slow me down they slow the company down.
for example, since you dont get it
If we have a 999 That is going to be set on the Benica Bridge, but before that i need to know the ground bearing pressure at full load and maxium boom, if they dont get me that information it could potentially stop the job. know how much money we would lose if we had to stop a job completely? not to mention what that would do to our backlog.
so tell me where seniority or making more money than me has anything to do with that?
also, how can anyone fire someone in another company...?
Do you not ****ing get it?

i dont think anyone believes you spencer.
also, as far as the firing thing. Hypothetical situations have never been your forte, so let me explain them to you.
When someone suggests to do something that seems outrageous or extremely out there it is usually to prove a point.
A easy example is:
Bob - "My ford is indestructible"
Steve - "Oh yeah, well why dont you run it into a wall at 70mph?"
The above example illustrates that the truck, is in fact not indestructible, and it does so in a hypothetical situation. And the bonus to this being a hypothetical situation is that it can be shown with out any harm coming to the truck.

i have never heard of a maintenance engineer before, so i thought i would look it up. while it appears no formal training is available for it, some companies do use the title, for various things.
from the kiewit website
The Maintenance Engineer will provide field and shop maintenance coordination and assistance on heavy equipment, monitor and schedule routine maintenance; log and maintain industry required recordkeeping. Follow all company safety policies and guidelines. Keep shop area organized and clean, maintain all tools in safe condition. Understand and follow satate and local regulations, such as those governing the disposal of hazardous waste. Keep current on company policy and manufacturer service bulletins. Document work performed using computer terminal and maintenance software. Maintain accurate vehicle/equipment history files. Attend company and manufacturer sponsored training classes. Miscellaneous other duties as assigned.

Yeah, I took that too, I actually had another class in the Journalism Department as well, Honors Seminar Freshman year. But nothing from the English department, still. The Advanced Grammar class from high school's credit did score me sophomore standing a semester early which was a nice bonus at registration time. i never said anything about anyone being uneducated dumb****s, nor did i imply it.
youre not a CFO. im not saying im an engineer. im not an engineer. im working hard to become one though.
my point is that i dont even declare myself as an engineer. i really really really want to be one.
when i get there (probably 10 years from now) im going to wear that title proud. because i will feel like i have earned it.
its not about making people feel stupid. its not about talking down to people.
i guess you might not understand. its my whole life. its all i do. i study all the time. to be an engineer. i put everything i have into it. when i get there i want to be proud of it. yeah, the money will be nice, but i will be an engineer. an electrical engineer.
sorry if it means a lot to me and i dont want other people trivializing what i am putting everything i have into.
if you cant understand that i have no other means of explaining it to you.
