alright i started this thing...
as of right now i have a basically bone stock truck with a super flex fan(lol) i got 31x10.50x15 tires on it, umm got start on the body work good lord theres alot...
just changed out the radiator got a brand newish one from four borthers. thats the most recent work i have done.
project ideas so far,
LIFT KIT
already got some machined heads not so great but they will work.
i know martin is gonna hate this idea but i wanna put a carb on it, or get the bigger injector kit more gas = empty wallet
lol
ummm okay
more stuff i am saving up to possibly get vortech heads if you guys think thats a bad idea let me know befor i buy em!!!
my plan is to have a pretty powerful motor when im done, i want to have the power off road as well as on.
basically i am taking any oppinions on my truck putting them together and seeing what i come up with.
hillbilly and martin you guys think im not listening but i am. i am researching the things you guys say and am thinking on it.

DO NOT remove the EFI. You will regret it later. I keep telling you, the engine should be your last concern. If you really want to lift it, and make it a decent off road rig, look into axles first. Look at John's (Hillbilly) truck. He has a very budget build, but spent it on important parts. He did go big block, but it is a very tame 454. Have you looked trough my Worklog or his? I would say try to duplicate what John did, you don't need to go huge. Also, is this a show car, or an off road rig? Because I am not sure how much body work you really want to do on something you are going to take off road.

some where in between rig and show to be honest i want to be able to clean it up from time to time but not strickly show i like to play in the mudd dont really do like rock climbing or anything like that would be fun to try though but from what i've seen those things get EXPENSIVE.
so start with axles work my way up to the engine....???
as for lift kit im thinking 8" what would i have to change drive train wise to make that fit??

See the dent under the latch? That is from a tree. See all the scratches on the shitty flat black paint? Those are from tree branches. You don't want a really nice body on an off road truck. It will just make you sad when you **** it up.

Did you see any of the pics from the recent Tuttle trip a bunch of members of this board went on? It really isn't that expensive. Also, I have mudded my whole life, and last weekend was the first time I have ever done the rocks. The rocks are much more fun than mudding. Unquestionably. I probably have $3,000 total in my piece of ****. I would guess that is about what John has into his K20, and Jake's K5 was probably way cheaper than that.

This truck has a 4" lift and 33" tires. It drives well and is easy on parts. It is very capable off road and is cheap to build. A new Rough Country 4" kit is about 300 bucks. Also the higher you go, obviously the more tipsy everything gets. 4" lift gives enough tire and ground clearance and keeps cg low.

Leave your tbi 350 alone for now. Do the rest and we will help you with the engine when the time comes. There is a vortec to tbi intake though. Prefer to lift and cut over super high lift. The best lift? I don't know. Jcwhitney has some nice kits for cheap though. my 4" was 300 with shocks.

I have 8" or something, and 36" Super Swampers. I want to get the same 37x12.50x16.5's that John has though when it comes time for new tires. I would say this kid should probably do 6" or 8". He wants to go tall, and that isn't horribly tall.

okay i think I've got a plan now.
1st and formost AXLES!!!!!!
2nd 8" lift probly from tuff country (damn those are cheap) but dont you get what you pay for?
3rd one million horsepower motor!!!!
lol
i woke up late and its all your fault martin!!!!! stupid snooze buttons anywayz!
Hillbilly

just to help you on your motor. Our buddy with the brown blazer only has a 305 yet broke 2 axles. Low range makes up some for lack of power.

I would do the first part and then evaluate how much moneyz you have. Million horsepower motors cost alot. Unless you want to be serious about mud drags I would build a truck motor (high torque). The blooms have a stroked 460 making 1000hp. It ain't no streeter. Plus those trucks can't be driven much or the springs go flat. Think of it as a drag car or a circle track car. The fuel will kill you.

He needs to ride along with someone the next time we go to Tuttle. One trip there will convert him. Oh, and John is right about the power, Jerry was getting after it with that 305 in that Blazer. The way he was going, it sure looked like he had a lot more power.

yeah im thinking just around 400-450 hp would be plenty for what i want to do, and i do realize that you don't need a ton of power for off roading,
however i will be entering mud drags so i have to have some kind of a show stopper lol

Those are my tips to get more out of your current engine. I would also change to a 180 thermostat to allow a bit more timing without ping.
I was thinking 1ton axles are a awsome idea but keep a look out for cheap 3/4ton stuff. A 1 ton uses a dana 60 and they go for 1000-1500 depending. I bought my whole 3/4 running and moving for $500. I am looking for a dana 60 too but will use my 44 till then. Remember a Front axle is full floating so if you brake a axle the tires will stay on.

A new A/C compressor is only like $100, and that is money well spent.

4x4 dually? Front hubs need too be machined or swapped to srw style. Don't know about the rear except the springs are narrower on a 1 ton so you will have to weld on new mounts. At least snag the front. How is the rest of the truck? What engine and trans? Crew?

possible that would have at least the front and trans/transfer case you need. I think I would still consider a 14 over a dana 70 just cause the parts are so cheap.

ok fellas called him went out there to pick up a radiator ended up buying a powerwasher too, we are going to try and do this tomorrow, i swear to god i told him he had three people that were interested, i just needed pics.
this is the info i have so far without seeing the truck. front end is a dana 60 rear end is a 14 bolt something or other. said the front end is in perfect shape. one of the rear fenders is broke on the box...
Bad news is he knows what everything is worth but he does sell me **** cheap so im going to talk him down as much as possible on this thing if it is in as good of shape as he says it is. believe me i am all over this **** trying to get those axles!!! oooo yeah and i got a 6" lift coming from his neighbor he said he would do it cheap!!! hes going the full 12" so i am totally excited!!!! were starting her off with a 6"lift and a 3" body lift that is my final decision as of now if i dont like the 6" lift im going to get the 8" i originally wanted!!!
oooooo happy day now myself and you guys can help me with the rest of my planning!!!!! thanks so far guys and im all over the dually and hopefully i can get it cheap and sell you all some of the parts!!!

What year is the truck? It should probably have a Dana 70 rear axle instead of a 14 FF, but I could be wrong. As for the front Dana 60, you realize you are going to have to buy new hubs for that to work, unless you want your wheels sticking clear out of the wheel wells.
Also, why a body lift???

What I really want is another NP540GD 5 speed like we had in our '84 C20. It's a close ratio 5 speed and 5th is 1:1. It splits up that awful gap between 3rd and 4th.

Somewhere in the harness in the engine compartment back near the firewall, there's a one wire weatherpack plug. Unplug that and set base timing at 0-5 degrees then plug the wire back together.
