View Full Version : Need some engine advice!

So a couple of months ago I started my car and it started to make like the sound an engine makes when it is starved for oil kinda like when you change your oil it has that sound until the fresh oil gets thru the oil pump and in the engine.
so i check the oil and it is full but still is making that sound really quietly.then i took it to the dealership to have it checked out and they said i just got some bad gas and to put some fuel injector cleaner in it. I kinda questioned their theory
it kinda went away for a while but i changed my oil about 900 miles ago and it is doing it again so i ask someone at work (I work at Saturn) and they think that since i am running Mobil 1 and a fram toughguard oil filter that it is filtering to much and thats why it is starving for oil when it first starts
but i just was wondering if this sounds about right to you guys and is my engine probably going to be ****ed in the long run?

first off ditch the fram.

i've really never heard of filtering it too much...
but i suppose it could be true. it doesn't hurt to through some injection fluid and some other cleaners in there just to be safe though either.

What does your oil pressure look like?
When it comes to engine noises involving oil I tend to go with the theory that if it's making noise it's too late.

so true its not even funny, hence y I drove my car back when I knew it was going to do more damage than I thought was done at the time, but still knew at the begining that it would ruin everything, and.... it did

I have no idea if this applies to the SOHC 4.6's, but the DOHC 4.6's are known to have worn hydraulic timing chain tensioners or whatever the hell you call em after mileage. Basically your car will sound like it has "the tick" when you first start it up, because the tensioners are worn and don't apply pressure right away, which makes the chain noisy for a second.
Like I said, I don't know if this applies to 16v's too. :dunno: My Cobra did it pretty bad on start up. One to ask about this that knows a lot more would be Thomas. Believe it or not, this chain noise sounds identical to an engine tick. It had me freaked out before I dug into the problem.

Filtering too much? Yeah, something like that. Get an oil filter from the dealer and put that on the car. Once you've done this, the noise will be gone.

hahaha one of the best dealer bs theories ever, bad gas.
Is it more of a knock or tick?

I'm serious about the oil filter Spencer. I know it sounds like some crazy bullshit, but it's not. I had to use dealer oil filters on my Mitsubishi to keep it from making the ole rocker arm tick.

that is ****ing wacky, they should flow FAR more than required, course i dont know **** about mitsu's but on this motor? sounds unrealistic.

ok thanks for the input guys!
1st i am going to put a motorcraft oil filter on it and try that since that one is the one i used to use
then try the hydraulic timing chain tensioners
but if all the above fails then i am going back to where i got the car and see about my extended warrenty but i know it won't be easy to get them to pay for anything expect maybey a light bulb

From what I hear Fram is not a good oil filter just by the way the paper is designed to sit inside it. Also, supposedly the Toughguard filter is too restrictive, and a valve thinks the filter is plugged up, so instead of starving the engine for oil, the valve shuts and bypasses the filter.

yea ive heard if u dont use a mitsu filter on most the mitsu products they been known to blow up and its not covered in warranty at least in new products its better to just stick with a factory filter

most what i have heard of with dsm's and using a fram is that they are more prone to lifter tick. people "say" its due to the design of the oil drainback on fram filters. and no filter in the world is going to keep a 2g 7bolt from walking. icefire would know better than me on the deal with the fram. although i have had friends with the 3rd revision lifters and have still had them tick. also have had friends try the atf added to oil trick and that hasnt worked either. although i dont know how i would feel adding atf.
if i was you, i would throw on a oil pressure gauge. if you see the gauge jump or fluctuate up and down everytime it knocks then you know your bearings are in GREAT shape and nothing is wrong.

my oil filter is the size of a lawn mower's oil filter
this is something that people debate over alot. some people say small filters are better cause they offer higher oil pressure than larger filters where larger ones offer more effective area to filter. some people even wrap band clamps around large oil filters to help them prevent distorting/flexing. i personally run the large size filter aka old style honda brand filters on my cars. the new style filter is small about the size of your subaru filter.

this seems to be the general concensus. i had a friend that tried the 3000gt vr4 lifters and no luck and then the 3rd revision lifters and they stayed quite for a couple thousand miles and then got loud like usual.

Yeah I've ran the revised lifters in a few cars and they all ticked eventually. I've tried the oil filter thing before but I honestly can't remember the results. It probably did stop but I forgot I was testing it or something and changed back to a wix filter. :) Oh well, I've got a whole box of mitsubishi filters right now that I can test with.
Unless it's really bad I usually don't notice anymore. With the revised lifters they still tick but it seems to be much quieter than some of the early versions. I've heard a few early 1G's that tick loud!

i do definitely agree that the revised lifter's ticking is less than 15 yr old stock lifters that have been used and abused. but it does seem impossible to totally get rid of the tick. surprisingly i had one friend that had a 1g with a motor he got from olstons and his you could just BARELY here ticking with the hood up. it was quieter than my friends cars with the revised lifters. my friends that have the revised lifters had good luck when they were just spinning 7 grand. but after they turned the rev limiters to 8 grand they started to tick more.
what do you think of the wix filter? i heard its actually a good filter and have used them in my families cars but have always used the oem in my own cars.

i dont know where to start commenting :ohnoes:...............btw the wix and mitsu filters are by far the best on dsm's the one way check valve is the key to keep some oil psi to reduce oil starvation on start up

for the money you would spend or less to have a dealer do a test for you, you could just buy an autometer gauge and do a test yourself everytime you drive your car.

not if its not factory some companys even been know to void if ur oil isn't changed with original brand etc not saying every company does it but there are some cases in which they can prove by doing a test to the oil that it will void the warranty and its been to court blah blah and many people lost

I have even heard of some companys voiding peoples warrenty because they are running a k&n air filter saying that the oil based air filter leaks oil into the mass air meters on the wires inside causeing them to fry

I'm pretty sure you would go back and sue the oil manufacturer at that point if it could be proven that their oil didn't hold up to what it was supposed to.
I'm betting they're pretty extreme case though where people tried running 30k mile oil changes or something. There are a lot of dumb people out there.

If the filter and oil carry the ASE (ASN? don't remember) designation, then it has passed the certification tests and is legally covered by warranty.
