View Full Version : Long term Hillbilly truck build up "Frank" soon to be "hank"

As a farm kid I always wanted a truck that could go anywhere, pull anything, and have enough tool and lights to fix most anything. I am slowly pieceing this truck together with the 454/400 I bought on sunday.
This is the plan
74-78 chevy 3/4 ton 4x4
The current one I am looking at is rough but has a 44/ff14 with 4.10s. This should be a OK start.
The chassis will get:
ord steering box support and hydraulic steering assist
4" lift front springs rear flip kit
ord shakle kit
Front and rear locker (most likely get 4.56s sooner or later)
Bobbed rear frame
Body:
Cut front fenders to clear 36" humvee tires.http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/36-12-50-16-5-GOODYEAR-HUMMER-H1-4-TIRES-85-90-TREAD_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trkparmsZ72Q3a1205Q7c39Q3 a1Q7c66Q3a2Q7c65Q3a12Q7c240Q3a1318QQ_trksidZp3286Q 2ec0Q2em14QQhashZitem170264433674QQitemZ1702644336 74
Replace rockers with 2X3 square tubbing
rino lined cab floor, door bottoms
A/C of course
am/fm/sirus/cd, cb, scanner etc
Flatbed: Since I will be bobbing the frame the box will be too long. This gives me a chance to build a good flatbed. This will include; 80 or 100 gallon propane tank, oxygen bottle for oxy/propane torch, built in tool boxes for chains/straps/shacles, cpl tool box for hand tools, 5th wheel ball, head ache rack for forward & rear facing lights. Pipe vise and bench vice. inset angle iron for holding pipe true.
Will add a welder but still undecided if it will be vehicle engine driven or self contained.
DriveTrain
454: Starting with the current 80k marshall rebuild with unknow compression or heads. I will do the standard intake cam and exhaust and to a $100 rebuild with new gaskets/bearing inspection/new oil pump/timing chain and pretty black paint. Cam will be gmpp truck cam 202/210 duration 468./.485 lift 110 ls. Intake weiand street warrior(ports depending on heads) and cheap 1 3/4 headers and 2/14 duals. Looking for high 400s in torque and low 300s for hp. Power range 1000-4000. Most likely start using the q-jet but go to propane. 100 amp nip alternator from a johndeere.
Th400: filter change and flush (only has 2k on it). Keep current tight converter for mpg(ha) and pulling. Trans cooler the size of texas
np203:inspect and repair as needed.
This will be a long project but in the end it should be good for moab or farm work.

I used to own a '74 3/4 ton 4X4 350/400 auto... I loved that truck and did **** with it I never thought possible. The day before my wedding the U-Joints broke and sent the driveshaft through the tranny and floor board of the truck. I hobbled together a shitty trans and sold it to buy my wife a new car... Sad, I know...
Still wish I owned it, Heck, I still wish I owned my 2000 Z71 too and it's gone. My Sierra is ok but its a roached out turd that's just gonna have to get me by until I can afford better.
There is just something about a good truck that can put a guy at rest. It's like having a best freind... Sure they **** you off once in a while but you just can't get enough of em... damn I need a new truck! :(
Hillbilly
7th October 2008, 01:06 PM
I don't like new trucks. I like trucks that get 8 mpg but have no payment and cost 1500 for a major repair. Insurance is cheap and if they are rusty they can go farther cause you can't hurt them.
Hillbilly
7th October 2008, 01:13 PM
Think about this. If you don't have a 580 payment (what my wife truck is) you can put in a 165 extra gallons of fuel. That doesn't include taxes or ins.

82355
7th October 2008, 10:20 PM
That really isn't a bad idea. Travis (what was his last name?) did that to an old 3/4 ton. It was pretty decent. What is wrong with EFI, and LT1's are probably getting pretty cheap.
Martin
Hillbilly
7th October 2008, 10:52 PM
Why? I have a running bbc? Small blocks don't have the 70mph burnout torque I long for. Plus then my car and truck will have one of the finest engines ever developed. LT1 are you on crack? Too hard to get parts. Optispark, duh. Bet they LOVE water. Plus efi is for the guys that can't figure out propane.
82355
7th October 2008, 10:53 PM
The later redesign isn't so bad. How about trying to find a TBI setup for the BBC?
Martin
Hillbilly
8th October 2008, 10:07 AM
once again, why? See propane is half of a propane/oxy torch. Propane is k.i.s.s. I work on broken new **** everyday I want simple. Like it doesn't have spark cause there is something wrong with the ignition and it doesn't have fuel cause it has something wrong with the fuel system. None of this lan connection b.s. Plus I am not swapping tbi on to it. I want 8.1 power in a 70s truck, I can build it. Plus if I get too much more **** I will put the camaro engine in it and drag the sled out the other end.
Hillbilly
8th October 2008, 02:38 PM

82355
8th October 2008, 05:43 PM
I like EFI. I never use to, it just kind of grew on me. Besides, can you really call TBI technology?
82355
8th October 2008, 05:48 PM
I think what I really like is the integration of certain newer technologies with old technology. An EFI sbc in a 1995 K1500 = meh, an EFI (pronounced "effie" to all you Tauras fans) 454 in a 1979 K30 = ****in' sweet!

It is the same truck. I drove it in teh winter months the last 2-3 years. its a pretty decent truck and your geting a good buy for $500. i wish i knew he was selling it, i would have bought it. it has 4.10's in it. tranny was serviced maybe 500 miles ago. motor runs well. it stinks inside.

Picture this, you are having your plane fixed and out comes the mechanic. He is wearing cutoffs and work boots with his socks pulled up and a greasey seed corn hat and has pliers on his belt. What would you think? Its ok though cause most spray pilots are farmers with wings (scary). He has his a and P. We were at his house and I bet there was 6-8 trucks in various stages of death.

To me the frame work would seem easier. Especially if you were going with a one inch body lift. You can stand next to the frame (with the body off), channeling would require leaning over. Plus EVERYONE who ever gets in the backseat is going to ***** and moan to you.

I am not sure who is responsible for building my front seat or if it is a GM thing. I know I have seen it in several Chevrolets (88 Suburban, 94 Blazer, 94 K2500) but it is a set of GM bucket seats on individual tracks that fully recline. Between the seats is a bench seat. The back of the seat folds down and has a wooden console between two armrests on the back. It also has two cupholders and three cassette tape slots. I'll take some pictures when I get home. I would imagine you have seen one like it before. Most comfortable pickup seat I have ever sat in.

An epiphany is the sudden realization or comprehension of the (larger) essence or meaning of something. The term is used in either a philosophical or literal sense to signify that the claimant has "found the last piece of the puzzle and now sees the whole picture," or has new information or experience, often insignificant by itself, that illuminates a deeper or numinous foundational frame of reference.

Yes it had a couple hundred rooms (80 in my graduating class), Always had shoes (but prefer red wing boots) my feet are sensitive to rocks sticks and such, I do wear bibs now and again I think they are nice. I went to maude roussue kinder-3rd grade then 5-6th grade. My dad was a accountant at miller and moore. My mom was the head nurse of surgery at st elizabeths. Dad moved home to farm my moms dads ground, parents got divorced. Moved back to lincoln with mom. Dad started farming his dads. Mom married a farmer and moved back to fairbury. Moved in with my father at 16. Lived in lincoln and the country. Country is better.
