can a sho even get to 185? with a lack of aerodynamics and power i'm surprised one can even hit 150, if that. I know with the proper amount of power (not necessarily from an LS1) an FD can hit 200 on the stock gears, but that's insane, to overcome the downforce generated by the car in stock form, an FD needs 500+ to reach 200. there is no way a sho can hold itself on the road at those speeds without a LOT of help. and then you have to overcome the fact that it's not a very aerodynamic car.

I think the SHO is more areodynamic than you think. With a good list of bolt-on's, a SHO can do 150 mph.
Some examples of Cd
Lamborghini Diablo - .31
Lamborghini Murcielago - .33
89-91 SHO - .33
Ferrari F40 - .34
Ferrari Testarossa - .36
This SHO pictured has been clocked at 175mph in the Silver State Classic and still pulling. It has some help with downforce. Pat, the owner, has a dyno of 520whp on the car. He uses 9" wide rims up front with race rubber and when I drove it around Second Creek Raceway, while coming on the front straight, I floored it and spun the tires up to redline.

No, not RWD or AWD, but still fun.
The red Viper in the picture actually raced Pat on the way to PPIR on I-25. Pat's SHO had his track wheels/tires, tools, jack, jackstands, cooler, and other misc stuff in it and after the race, the owner of the Viper took the stall next to us to ask what was done to the car... I later had a ride that day in that Viper, as well as the yellow F430 and maroon 911 Turbo. Earlier in the day, a blue 360 Modena hit the wall... Not sure on the speed, but we normally carried about 105 around the turn when we ran it.

congrats, but I would like to know how he figured out teh CD on the sho, cuz I don't think there is anyway it is that aerodynamic, or produces that much downforce, maybe the one in that picture thanks to the spoiler and front lip and the way the front is lowere significantly more than the rear. creating a better shape for the air to push down. But what's the CD on a stock sho?

This (http://www.shotimes.com/php-bin/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&mode=thread&order=0&thold=0&sid=27) is where I got the Cd for the SHO.
I'm not sure how long it took as I wasn't driving it at the time. I do know that the car can really pull though (with MAJOR torque steer... ripping you into the next lane at 90mph, don't ask how I know).
One things these little motors do well is run up top. The 520whp is almost 630 at the crank... For the most part, Pat runs on street gas with water/injection (like me). The car has mostly been built for the road courses (orginally built for the Silver State Classic), but has run some AutoX in it. I think his best time he has run at Bandimere on a 90+ F day (and only one run that day) was a 13.2 at 116. If you've seen the video I posted with his SHO a week or so ago, you'll see that he comes off the line as if he were driving the kids to school and shifts softly as he's shredded 3rd gear before.
ps pikes peak for the win! i've got family in the springs, i love travelling there. going up over fall break actually.
I loved Pikes Peak... then they closed it. I know it was purchased privately and talks of reopening it for track days, but I haven't kept up with it in the last year. When will you be that way?? I am in CO about 5 days every month. If you REALLY wanted, I'm sure that if we were there the same time, I'm sure I could talk Pat into letting me give you a ride in the car above ('cause I'm sure that's all you're thinking about:rofl:).
I'm sure Gary M. (lives in the Springs) could give you better information about the SHO. IIRC, he used to be an engineer at Ford at the time and wrote the altitude timing tables for the car. I had him shim my transmission to handle more power. He's also working on an extremely clean build of an SVO Mustang sitting right underneath his boosted SHO that hasn't moved in years.

Jeff Sparkman pulled these numbers for the '89-91 cars out of the cobwebs: Cd (coefficient of drag) 0.38 and frontal area 23.2 sq. ft.
Someone (who prefers to remain anonymous) later mailed me, and claims to of worked directly with wind tunnel testing of an '89 SHO. They report the Cd to be .33 and confirmed the frontal area number above.
I love how he wants to remain annonymous. No offense, but i'll go with the

A byproduct of downforce will increase Cd, however, a Hummer isn't falling in that category:rofl:. I'm sure you weren't trying to say that...
I am not arguing either way with the SHO. It's be widely known on the SHO Forum that the Cd is actually decent (some of the older SHO guys were actually involved with Ford at the time), but I don't really pay that much attention. I'll never go that fast... I won't risk it illegally and I don't have enough safety equipment to try it on any type of course. I never raced Pat's

Heat, high altitude, poor driving (granny shifting) and FWD pig will do that to you. (There have been SHO's knocking on the 12 second door with far less power). Pat, like me, enjoys turns, so his fun is had there.

Now add another 4,000 ft altitude on that and see what it runs...
I've already stated that he wasn't driving to beat the car. NHRA altitude corrections it at around 12.41 @ 122.5 mph (with the lesser correction factor). Even though people know altitude causes power loss, many do not realize the extent of it (more so NA and SC). My last dyno had a correction factor of .24 in Fort Collins (which is lower in altitude than Denver).

I have been around 175mph in my car before, and it had a LOT left. But a completely stock 220hp manual trans SHO is only good for 144mph.
there is no way a sho can hold itself on the road at those speeds without a LOT of help.
The stock SHO came with z-rated tires, stiffer springs and dampers, and held to the road quite well at 140+, much better than many of it's contemporaries. My car is lowered, with stiffer aftermarket suspension, and handles high speed very well.
congrats, but I would like to know how he figured out teh CD on the sho, cuz I don't think there is anyway it is that aerodynamic, But what's the CD on a stock sho?

Quoted from Edmunds.com: "With an aerodynamic drag coefficient of only 0.29, the Sable was one of the slickest cars in the world"
Here is the full article: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Features/articleId=46007
Granted, the Taurus was slightly different than the Sable. The later model SHO's were cited as having a cd of .32, and the 96-99 models were lower still (I believe). I have numerous articles from MT, CD, HR, etc etc that agree with the low .30's cd number. In addition, many modded SHO's are lowered a number of inches, which will decrease their frontal area, adding to their ability to cut through the atmosphere quite well.
I can not speak for certain regarding the SHO pictured, but a SHO with less power (450whp) than that one holds a few records with the ECTA (the east coast landspeed organization, they run at the 'Maxton Mile). The particular car has ran a best of 170 or so in the standing mile, right on par with a C6 Z06 and Ford GT. I can only assume that the 520whp one would do even better. My goal, for my turbocharged car, is to break 180 in the mile next time out. Due to my much more generous TQ curve (in comparison to the centrifugal SC cars), I think I will reach my goal.

Bench racing? I simply answered your qeustion: "520 hp can take it to 175? how well is it still pulling and at what distance did it make that in how much time?"
I have personally seen a lesser powered car do 170 in the standing mile. An extra 60-70whp will certainly increase it's speed. And I have personally witnessed a number of Vipers (none stock) run the mile and half-mile. A 95 Viper with 520whp will likely not run much over 170 in the mile. Granted, the SORC has elevation as a factor, but a VERY well built 04 Viper (609 rwhp 609 rwtq) ran 178 there last year. The forced induction Vipers do very well. There has never been an FD at the SORC to my knowledge. But I have seen some running at Bonneville.
