View Full Version : Disobey a Traffic Control Device

Coming home from a movie I see a lone cop car in the middle of the road with nobody in it, right infront of C-station on Coddington next to I-80. While I didn't think much of it I went around the car which wasn't blocking the whole lane. I cautiously drive a few more feet and see a cop running after towards my car. I open my door (window doesn't roll down) and he freaks: "What are you doing? Did you not see that cop car in the road? What's that usually mean?" Um.. Not sure I figured... "Yeah! Now me give your license!" After I give it to him, they stand infront of my car examining my lovely hood, while staring at me, so I stare back and smile. Another cop gives my license back and I sign the citation, $69? They can suck my ball sack, because after I turn around a whole line of traffic is behind me driving slowly around the car before they recieve their tickets.
Maybe I'm just a dumbass but nobody ever told me that a cop car meant, DO NOT ENTER. IMO their should have been a cop standing their directing traffic because I couldn't even see anything ahead of the cop car, and I'm sure everybody else got let off with a warning.
Also, my parents just drove by their on their way home and said now it's all blocked off starting at the bypass. Bullshit
By the way there was an accident on intersection on Coddington and A street, 1 block from my house. A bike was demolished on the side of the road and a car had the front end smashed about 20 yards in front of it. Looked pretty bad once you got around the cop car.

32 views and nobody has an opinion? Should I have known better or would you have done the same?

I saw the accident scene, moments after it happened and then a while later. The first firetruck was just pulling up to the accident when I came by the first time. A cop was already there and made it impossible to go north on Coddington.
The second time I came through from the north like you; the cop car was sitting on the street near the stop&rob, all it's lights on and blinking. Of course you don't go around any emergency vehicle that is on the road like that. I wouldn't doubt that there is a law on the books about it.
Would have you gone around the vehicle if it was an ambulance? A fire truck? A S.W.A.T. team van?
The cop is in the right, even if his car is poorly positioned, it means stop and figure out a different route.

I hung a right, then a left to 24th St. FWIW and avoided the ticket.

Yeah I guess, but the 6 other cars behind me didn't think so. I didn't actually see the accident, but sometimes when you see an accident there is a cop directiing you around it. I figured same thing except for nobody directing traffic

if the cops lights were on that you passed, you deserve it, if the lights were not on then i think differently

Where did you learn that a cop car meant do not pass? He was hardly blocking the lane, half way into another road which went right. I was never taught that a stopped cop meant a violation if you went around it, not sure where you guys learned this but i've drove up on accidents and such before, every otehr time there was a cop directing traffic around or telling people to go a different way. If there were multiple cars there I would know that meant road block, this was one car blocking half the lane.

If the car is in a position that would normally cause it to be in an accident do not go around it. Half blocking the road qualifies. Unless he moved the car between when you and I were there the car was straddling the yellow lines in the center, perpendicular to the flow of traffic.
I learned that in Drivers Ed.

The easiest way to remember is that the only emergency vehicles you stand a chance of being able to pass while they are stopped on the road with thier lights on are cops. 99% of the time they will have thier yellow flashers directing traffic to go to thier right or left. NEVER pass an ambulance or fire truck that's stopped on the road with lights on unless directed by an officer. It will save you time and money in tickets, let alone not endanger the people doing thier thing from those vehicles.

Common sense fails you. Do you think he ran out of gas on the way to the donut shop? Ignorance of the law does not get you out of a ticket. Just pay it and be done with it. I'm sure the cop would rather not have had to write you a ticket and just deal with the accident scene.

I'm having a hard time understanding whats going on... Because i've seen cops pull people over on the road... lights flashing and all.. Is everyone suppose to stop and find another route because someone is getting ass raped by a cop for doing 5 over? I've gone around those tons of times and seen everyone and their dog do the same.. LIke i said maybe i'm not understanding what happened.

From the sounds of it. There was a cop in the middle of the road.
When a cop has someone pulled over, you can obviously tell they have someone pulled over.

He was one of the 15 police officers there, the one car which was the only thing in my view at the time had nobody in it, lights flashing on top, so i slowly steer 2 feet to the left and notice 1 of the 15 cops standing around the curve start running towards my car, and yeah i've seen plenty of accident with cop cars infront of the scene and i just drove around them like everyone else was doing

Usually someone is pulled over on the SIDE of the road...

Don't cops have cones and safety stuff they are supposed to put out to let you know the road is closed.

My got her first speeding ticket in her life about a month ago. She got stopped by one of those cops who jump out in front of your car and just signal you down a side street so you can park and get your ticket. Well, since the cop had an orange vest on, and all he did was point down the street, I guess she thought he was just a construction worker signaling her for a detour or something, because she turned as instructed and just kept on going down the road on her way.

Dude were the police...we break into that ****, ohh good idea ok lets give this kid a ticket I'm STARVING!" look on his face.

there was no firetruck when I arrived, and there was more of a curve, keep in mind I didn't see all of the commotion around the curve until I got around the cop car, and I went to the left, it was mostly blocking the right of the lane, only had to get about a foot over to avoid it

Why would you go around a cop car parked in the middle of the ****ing road with its god damned lights on anyways?
You deserve a ticket just for being an inattentive dumbass twat.

You made that sound like..."Why would you drive through a cop baracade you stupid idiot" it was a cop car... Not a "Do Not Enter" sign
I've driven around them PLENTY of times, just the other times their giving someone a ticket, or waving me to go around them, this time nobody was in it or around it.

30th July 2008, 12:51 AM
So, the big question, was the cop car pointed with traffic as if he pulled someone over? Or was it pointed perpendicular to traffic flow like the pic above?
302fox5
30th July 2008, 12:57 AM
yeah he was perpendicular, as if he was kinda "blocking traffic" i guess but still, everyone went around it, I was just the first one and got a ticket for it, everyone one else get off with a verbal warning

30th July 2008, 12:58 AM
There was no firetruck or ambulance when I got to the scene either, and from where his car was parked you couldn't see anything, and it wasn't so in the middle of the road, almost as if he was turning to go to the gas station but stopped before his whole car was in the other road

You can tell the 6 other trucks that followed me. I don't think I was the worst considering I was driving away waving my ticket and shaking my head at them, and they drove by me anyway

thats just them being dumb and it turns into their problem at that point. but im going to have to go with everyone else. you see a cop car in the street with its lights on...dont go around it....but IMO i probably would have done the same if he wasnt positioned directly in the middle of the street. which you said he wasnt.
