View Full Version : Weakest College Football Conference?

Well ... I've been watching ESPN a lot on my lunch break at work and I was wondering what anyone on here thought about the different major conferences in college football.
We all know the Big XII doesn't get any respect, but they have some competition this year as to whom the analysts are picking to be the worst.
I didn't add all the little conferences who I don't feel stand a chance to compete against the bigger schools for reasons like they don't have the schedules to compete against top notch opponents and prove themselves, such as Hawaii or they just don't have any schools that are worth a hoot.

The Big XII got a bad rap cause Oklahoma State ... they claimed to have the greatest offense of all time and then decided to blow ass this year so far. Herbstreit said the Big XII was weak because Nebraska lost. He gave kudos to USC for beating a tough Nebraska team, but later on in that same segment he said the Big XII was weaker than the Big 10 because Nebraska lost, something about how the game was a bigger blowout than the score showed. Gave us no credit for having one loss to the #1 team, no credit for playing with them for most of a half, no credit for having the lead at one point in time, no credit for looking like we were going to dominate them, no credit for anything. He's still a little butt hurt over the greatest teams ever being the '71 and '95 Nebraska teams instead of his '01 Miami and '04 USC teams.
I think the Big 10 took a **** this year because we all know Michigan's story, the biggest upset in college football history at home in front of 100,000 fans in maize and blue, the loss to Appalachian State, then the loss to Oregon, starting out 0-2. Then now having their only victory to Notre Dame, a team that looks as if it could actually go without winning a game this year.
Minnesota lost to Florida Atlantic ... Iowa lost to Iowa State, Northwestern lost to Duke, Illinois lost to Missouri (not really lost, gave the game away) ... the rest of the teams in the conference are unbeaten, but really haven't played anyone. Wisconsin is #9, but their crowning victory thus far is to Washington State, and Ohio St (#8) beat Washington.
The Big XII on the other hand, out of the "weak" BIG XII north, Missouri and Kansas are still unbeaten, Kansas State lost to a ranked #18 Auburn team, Nebraska lost to the #1 USC Trojans ... both Colorado and Iowa State are horrible this year, but still have managed to beat Colorado State and Iowa, both tough in state rivals.
Out of the south, we have Oklahoma who ass raped Miami, A&M who beat a tough Fresno State team and gets Miami next, Texas who beat a ranked TCU team and Texas Tech is still unbeaten, but still unproven. Then at the bottom of the south we have Baylor, who is well, Baylor. Oklahoma State lost to #13 Georgia and a unranked Troy, making the whole conference look bad in some people's eyes. Which baffles me, the rest of the conference isn't doing bad.
But we all know Nebraska gets no love, and it's starting to rub off on the rest of the Big XII, even the south, which ESPN usually loves.
I'm still unsure why Nebraska dropped from #14 to #24 after losing to the #1 team? Id we would have won, we would have moved from #14 to lets say #10, which USC would have dropped from #1 to most likely #8. ****ed up if you ask me.
As much as people hate the BCS, it somewhat levels out the playing field away from the biased polls which favor the SEC, PAC10 and Big 10 that the sports reporters love.

I agree that the Big 10 sucks ass this year. I'm seriously subjected to that **** here and none of the teams have shown anything impressive. They have all struggled mightily against some bad opponents.

The Big East has yet to be proven to even be mentioned with most the other conferences. They have a decent team or two, but that's about it.
I didn't mention the Sun Belt, WAC, Mountain West, Conference USA or Mid-American conferences either.

Umm ... they're not even close to what I'm talking about, IIRC both Doane and Wesleyan play in the NAIA and are in the Great Plains Athletic Conference. Sioux Falls is in they're conference and won the championship for the NAIA last year, so I wouldn't think they're in all that weak of a conference. And Wesleyan just beat Doane 46-7 last weekend.

But who's worse ... that's the question.
And how is the ACC not in the running? They're not full of powerhouses this year.

ACC is just flying under the radar. They shouldn't have been on the poll, not deserving of mention. They are probably worse than some of the others getting more votes but no one cares about them. I came into this thread to vote Big 10 and didn't even look at the other options.

Hey I played at Wesleyan. lol Sioux Falls should be D2. But yeah... I would say ACC or Big XII. The ACC is weak but so are we. The SEC has powerhouse teams, the Big 10 is on the rise now, the Pac 10 is golden with USC, Cal, Oregon. But I would say ACC cuz it's an open battle. Wake isn't going to win. FSU and Va Tech (with maybe BC) are the only 2 in it and they are struggling.

Meh ... Big 10 is still struggling I wouldn't rank them too high yet.
In my books ...

Big 10
ACC

I think Michigan finally figured it out and will start performing. Not great, but they will squeek out wins. Wisconsin will probably lose tomorrow, but they are a good team. Penn St., Mich St., Purdue, all are decent teams right now. I would say the Big 10 isn't too shabby right now. Started off real rocky though. I'm just stunned that USF is for real. They played good teams real close and beat West Virginia today... only because Pat White got hurt... but still.

Yeah Michigan is doing somewhat better, but I'm not sold on them yet. I think they'll still struggle this year a little more. Wisconsin hasn't played anyone worth a ****, the only team they've played with a winning record was The Citadel. Michigan State is maybe mediocre at best. I wouldn't expect greatness from them.
I also think people don't give the Big XII enough credit. Yeah the North has been weak for a while, but things are starting to change. Missouri as much as I hate to say it looks better, Kansas State has potential, we haven't totally ****ed ourselves yet. And then there's Oklahoma and Texas in the south, with A&M, Tech and OK St. who can perform.

Are you on crack? A decent team or two? Have you been watching football the last 4 years?
WVU, Rutgers, Louisville, and now South Florida. They're quickly becoming a dominant conference. And none of the shitty teams in that conference are pushovers. Cinci is 4-0, and they dominated Miami. Pitt is always a halfway decent team.
I vote that the ACC is by far the worst conference, with the Big 10 and Big 12 making a close tie for 2nd. With Miami and Florida St. both dropping off real hard the last few years, the ACC doesn't have any serious powerhouses(VTech MAYBE). Both the Big 10 and 12 have teams that have fallen flat on their face in pre-conference play, and are WAY overrated. The only REAL football conference is the SEC, which I'm sure we can come to a consensus agreement on.

USF is really the only team I think I underrated out of the ACC, but West Virginia, not impressive really, last year ... yeah, they looked good. But this year is a different story. WV has speed, but speed alone doesn't win you games. Louisville, they lost to a bad Syracuse team. Syracuse isn't known for much other than losing. UConn is leading the ACC, who have they played? Duke and Pitt ... those are some hardcore top teams. Rutgers could have a decent season, but then again, who do they play? I'll admit it, the ACC could be good, but they don't really ever play anyone to compare to. When your highlight win is a shaky Oregon St team out of the PAC 10, that's sad. If you look at the Big XII, we schedule good teams to play in the non-conference schedule to prove or show where we compare to other teams. Win or lose, we at least played a decent team most of the time.

you kept saying ACC, but i think you mean Big East ;). Have you forgotten that the Big East went 5-0 in bowl games last year?

The thing with WV is that speed DOES win them games. Look what happened with USF when Pat White got hurt. The Big East has horrible defenses, Rutgers, WV, and Louisville just score upwards of 40+ a game. Hard to lose while doing that. Though it is possible. The Big East can make a name for itself this year I think... though LU is suffering. But get Pat White healthy and they lose to Rutgers but otherwise don't lose the rest of the season.
The Big XII North may have more difficult teams than the south this year. lol OU got beat by Colorado though that was a total fluke, I watched most of that and it was one sided until I stopped apparently. K-St. is coming into their own a little, though not much, they just seem to always have Texas's number (their defense shows up for one game a year and that's it), but KU is legit putting up big numbers against subpar teams, us, Mizzou... Okie St. flat out blows this year... you can't lose to Troy by more than 20 and claim greatness. Texas will get beat at least 2 more times, A&M is off and on, and Tech just never plays anyone really hard non-conference and loses the in conference games.
I just love the way the talent is getting spread out in college football these days. Any team has a chance at any of the top dogs and they are coming out with upsets. It's fun to watch!
