on the way home, met a mustang at a red light. turned green, drove as usual, on the way up to the speed limit at about 20mph he got on it, so i got on it and went to about 50mph. the speed limit was 45mph. cop pulls behind me, the mustang hits the brakes and turns into a neighborhood, the cop pulls me over, didn't clock me, just said i would be getting a ticket for engaging in a speed contest and must appear in court.
sooo...is there anything i can do? should i plead guilty or not not guilty? i have all points on my license, havent had any major tickets in the last year. what kind of fine (if any) am i looking at?

contact the city att. and settle out of court. Explain you were doing 50mph and would like a 5mph speeding ticket or the option to take stop class (assuming you have this option available) otherwise you are going to plead not guilty and take her to court and waste the cities time nad money trying to prove you were engaged in a speed contest.

They won't give you a speeding ticket without having speed clocked....I tried today with the city attorney with my little run in with them.
Brad - PM me with which officer it was.

See if you can take a 15mph over or anything else. Engaging in a speed contest is a nice way to state "drag racing". The ticket really isn't that expensive and its only one point off your record. But it will **** you on your insurance. I kinna had the same thing happen to me three years ago. I actually couldn't get insurance from a lot of carriers. I am still paying for it!! Little did I know that most insurance companies look 5 years back.

well i'm listed under the 'rents for insurance and they've been with State Farm and qualified for some kinda thing where none of the cars insured can be dropped. so i'm safe there. I'm just gonna plead not-guilty, explain it wasn't a contest of speed bc the speed limit was never broke, as i shut down at the speed limit and stayed there while the other car kept on it WOT slicing thru traffic. we'll see where that takes me

I imagine that will get you no where, whether you went over the speed limit or not, the judge would still see it as a contest

very true, to "drag race" you don't need to even break the speed limit just a FYI

Did you rat all of us out? A professional officer like this one has been highly trained in the art of interigation and can suck information out of you without you even knowing. they say things like..."Nice car." or, "That ricer stuff is really lame don't you agree?" The next thing you know your at the Motel 6 with your pants down and they are pulling away in the Crown Vic with a list of names. I've seen it a 100 times.

Mits3kGT
26th June 2008, 06:14 PM
i'm just going to tell the judge i'm pleading not-guilty (i've been given advice on trying to string court out as long as possible). I'll be assigned another day for the hearing or w/e
then i'm just going to say we weren't engaged in a contest of speed, as the speed limit was never broken by myself. I never "chirped" my tires, as i have AWD. The car next to me, squeeled his tires and he was in the act of racing. I simply drove to the speed limit, and retained it until i was pulled over.

get someone you trust to go with you, if the cop shows up just have the person say that you're not into racing, any sort of aliby helps, unless you have a prior for something related to street racing, such as another speed contest, excesive speeding, reckless/willful reckless driving, in which case you're probably screwed if the cop shows up, but yeah, good luck
