My accord has a real bad surging problem (revs up to about 2k rpm and drops, over and over again) until it warms up. Ive tried adding coolant to it because that is usually the problem with these hondas but it still does it. Does anyone know what the problem could be? Or how to fix it?

Fast idle thermo valve. My girlfriends 88 LXi does the same thing. I messed with it in the past and it got better, now it just does it in the winter when it's cold, but I think that's due to her old injector seals are a nice big vacuum leak which you could check as well with some carb cleaner.
Heres a quote to help..
On the Fast Idle Thermo valve, there is a plate with two screws holding it on. Take the screws out, remove the plate and there is a spring loaded plunger inside with a ring around it holding it in place. There are two slots, one on each side of the ring. Use a small slot screwdriver to turn the ring and screw it back down into the valve cylinder.
What happens is the ring starts backing out and opens up the valve more and more causing the idle to slowly increase over time. This is what controls your idle before the motor warms up.

Could be a malfunctioning Idle Speed Controller

Just about every honda of the late 80s/early 90s does it... my g/fs LXi does it, her brothers 92 prelude does it, and his g/fs 92 accord does it.. lol From what i've read it's always either a combination of vacuum leaks/that fast idle thermo valve.

Agree. Vac leak, thermo valve, or ISC.

if the valve is bad it will do that

Or if there isnt coolant getting up to the TB it will do that thats why adding coolant works sometimes

Well it seems to have gotten worse. It still does it but now when its warmed up also. 1000 rpm to 1500 rpm and on and on. Is there any honda people on here that would want to look at it? Its starting to get real annoying.

Did you at least attempt to do what I said with the fast idle valve? Or check for vacuum leaks?

What year is it? if its a 3gee i almost guaranty its the fast idle valve. Its right on the back of the intake manifold and has 3 bolts and 2 coolant hoses going to it. You can take it off and take apart to spray carb or throttle body cleaner in it and just make sure its not stuck.

Yeah i tried that but it was on the front of the intake if im correct. I dont think it made a difference though.

1990, ill try that though. Do i have to take off the throttle body? Because there is not very much room behind the intake.
