Is it just the way the camera took the pic or is there some nasty camber going on with the front tires?

Fix it up. It needs a lot of work. The first thing I did was take out the pathetic little Grant steering wheel that was in it, and put the old steering wheel from my Suburban in it. Then I let the windows down for a couple weeks to air out the mouse **** stink. Gave it a real thorough cleaning, changed the oil, powerwashed the **** out of it (changed the color in the process), removed the old Pioneer tape deck that didn't work, and cut out the dash to install a new Pioneer deck (Walmart special).

First thing I did was remove the cheesy bug deflector and power wash the **** out of the whole thing. It was originally a brown pickup, then someone did a little bit of shitty bodywork (it was full of mud), and painted it white. When I got to power washing it, the white paint peeled right off, so I blew it all off and took it down to the primer. Some places the primer came off too, revealing the brown paint. Then I jerry rigged the bumper back on. The truck had had a snow plow on it, and the bumper mounts were removed and the plow mounts welded to the frame. Seeing as I didn't have the bumper mounts, I just left the plow mounts on for now, drilled four holes in the bumper, and bolted it to the plow mounts. It is a 1982 (1981 - 82 Chevrolet pickups have the turn signals mounted in the front bumper), so I had to do something for front turn signals because they were broken out of the bumper that came with the truck. So I bought a couple cheap trailer lights and zip tied them in place in the front bumper. Not real classy, but it makes it legal to drive. http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb176/82355/frontleftshop.jpg

Went out to a farm that belongs to a guy I know, to get some parts from a pickup parked in the tree line. Literally. I was hoping to get some marker lights for the roof as well to replace my broken ones, but the ones he had were a different style. He also had a 1981 or 1982 with a good front bumper and turn signals, so I might have to go back and get that one of these days.

Got two doors, a split rear window, a front seat, and the carpet for $150. More than I thought they were really worth, but no big deal. I needed a driver side door because the other night I slammed the door when I got out, and it shattered the window glass. I could have just replaced the window glass, but the door skin was so rusty it was peeling away from the door. The passenger door wasn't terrible, but this one was better, and it had a mirror on it.

When I first bought it, I noticed the distributor cap was cranked over in an odd direction, but I just figured the previous owner had installed it one tooth over. No big deal. Well I had loaned out my timing light, and I have never seen it since. So I had a guy at work bring his in and finally checked it last night. My guess is that the previous owner set the base timing with the vacuum advance hooked up. It had 8 degrees of timing at idle with the vacuum advance. . . . . . . . .

The spare tranny that came with the truck that "shifts great, recently rebuilt, just parted the truck out", is kind of a pos. Had to clean out the giant mouse nest that filled the entire insdie of the tranny, and the shifter forks have no plastic on them. . . . . . .

Can you save it? I have a complete one and some parts. I should have a good shift top.
82355
17th July 2008, 11:40 PM
Here is inside the gear case after I took off the shift tower, and the PTO covers. Then dug out the mouse nest by hand, power washed out the case, hot tanked it, and then blew it out with compressed air. I should have taken a picture before hand.
http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb176/82355/sm465.jpg
I think that is what went wrong with the one in the truck. Those snap rings break and the input gear on the counter cluster disengages. It also popped out of second a lot, and that is the second gear counter gear. I have heard that will cause that. A friend of mine from Milford just put a piece of pipe between the two gears. I have heard that someone makes an actual machined piece for that.
http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb176/82355/sm465a.jpg
There is the shifter fork, and the last of the plastic hanging off to the side.
http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb176/82355/sm465b.jpg
I don't think you can see it there, but the case is cracked around that bolt hole. Someone had tried to JB weld it. That made me giggle.

As for the shift tower, I can probably use the one that is in the truck. It shifted nice, just popped out of second. So the shifter forks are probably fine. The spare is a 19x5. I am guessing 1975. All SM465/NP205's use the same 10 spline output shaft and coupler right?

According to Advance Adapters, they built NP205's with 10 spline inputs from 1971 -'85. So that could be an '83 or a '73 housing. Odd.

The splines were hammered out, it was bound to happen eventually. Better there than anywhere else. Also, he and his room mate towed it across town after they did it, so it's whatever.

That is the one that actually came in the truck when I bought it (not when GM built it, the casting date on the transfer case is 1980, the mounting adaptor has a casting date of 3 (either '73 or '83), and the pickup is an '82).
I was just cleaning it up to put back in, and then I decided to twin stick it, and pretty soon I had it completely disassembled. I do stupid **** like that sometimes.

I think I pm'd you, but it sounds like you have trouble with those. As near as I can figure the update is just the sleeve between the clutch gear and the third gear on the countershaft. If you bought the sleeve, you should be good. Chances are though your trans in the truck already has the update. If you don't want to pull the whole trans just pull a PTO cover and look. You'll either have 2 snap rings keeping those gears apart, or that sleeve keeping them apart.

My buddy that I sold it too. I got a free T5 tranny for it from Doug Jacobsen (10Second6), but it turned out to be the incorrect application. My buddy and another kid we work with had tried putting it in, and couldn't figure out why it wasn't working. Then I showed up, realized what the problem was and tore down both transmissions and mixed the good parts together to make a usable one. When I got done, they put if back in (They had been drinking for several hours at this point. They put it in backwards. I am assuming that is the problem, because it is a brand new clutch, and it will barley hold, and then starts slipping.

82355
6th October 2008, 12:37 AM
Still in the planning stage. I never did get a definitive list on what I would need. Will my calipers from the GM 10 bolt work on the Dana 44 Hubs? That would make that part simple.
New U bolts
Rear conversion U-joint (don't know which one)
Not sure on front driveshaft
what else?
Martin
fmstruck
6th October 2008, 01:19 AM
I would bet that they will fit. I'm hooked up with Carquest so I looked the two up. They show different calipers, but it's probably just the hose connection that is different. The pistons are the same size, so you won't run into a hydraulics issue. I would just put the 3/4 t stuff from the D44 on the 10 bolt though. D44 sucks to work on and I'm not sure it's any tougher than the 10 bolt. Plus your knuckles and tie rod stuff might not be the same and that becomes a nightmare. Just change everything from the spindles out.

I glanced under it today, it does have a leveling valve looking deal on the rear axle. I'll have to fiddle with that. You don't think a Dana 44 is an improvement over a 10 bolt? True. The bearings are a little heavier in the 44, but the setup sucks on them. They put the shims behind the cones instead of the races on the carrier. Then, they put the pinion depth shims under the rear pinion race in the housing, thus making setup a headache and thus why I hate them so much. All that to say you probably won't break a 10 bolt with a 350 and an auto in your burban.
fmstruck
6th October 2008, 04:12 PM
That all being said, that extra SM465 and 205 you have would be pretty sexy in the Burban. I actually transplanted an NV4500 and 241 into Dad's 1994 Sub when the 700R4 gave up the ghost. It was pretty much a straight across bolt in. He bought everything at the Lincoln swap meet for $300. Just had to buy a clutch pedal and pivot and the hydraulics. That's the nice thing about GM stuff. All the holes were already dimpled where they needed to be drilled even.
82355
6th October 2008, 05:37 PM
94 Suburban has the pumkin on the driverside, 88 has it on the passenger side. Otherwise I would like an NV4500 in my Burban. I am sure it is still do-able though. I have contemplated the SM465, but I like the overdrive. Meh. I just need more money. . . . . .
fmstruck
6th October 2008, 07:59 PM

82355

There's an '85 burban out at my mom's place. Tranny has no reverse, so it's been parked and sitting for a few years. Had a paint job before it was parked (not the best though, some bondo in the door is now cracking and clear on hood is peeling). Interior is clean and it's a 350/4x4.
I think she would take $500 for it.

Installed.

Bought a cheapo mirror from Autozone or whatever. It was a piece of ****. Everything was made of plastic. The tube that goes from the mounting bracket to the mirror was made of plastic with a metal piece on the end with the thread insert. It came loose on installation. So I took the old one (it was a clamp on, not bolt on mirror), and drilled and tapped it. A lot of effort, and it looks ugly, but I can see behind me now.

Then I did some stuff to the engine. It is a pain in the ass to work on with all that lift, so I lowered it temporarily.

Did you just have to re-ground them, or did they have some of those silver bulbs in them?

The market lights or the turn signals? If you are talking about the marker lights, I added a ground wire to them, even though the design was so that you didn't have to. They were $9.99 at Harbor Freight, so I wasn't real impressed with their design, but they should work now, after I installed them my way.

Like $100 I think? I don't remember. My CV joint was good, so I just had them retube and balance it and install a front U-joint (the old one was missing caps).
