a couple of days ago, i installed a pro 5.0 shifter, it drove around and it shifted just perfect
yesterday, i was on the dyno, and during my last pull, the car didnt want to come out of 4th but it finally did and i didn't think much of it. on the way home, it absolutely WOULD NOT go into 4th, so i figured i'd just go 3-5 and let it sit for awhile.
well, today, i said "ill try 4th", and it went in no problems and came out with no problems.
FINALLY, just normal driving today i go into 3rd, then try to go into 4th. heres where i am now:
-the car is stuck in 3rd, it will go to neutral, but only back into 3rd
time for a rebuild? other ideas?

1st, 3rd, and 5th worked? Check the adjustment of the shifter stops.

Have you taken a look to make sure the shifter/stops are all tight?

haha, well put
i just found it very weird that it would start acting up like that on the dyno
and also that 1,2,3,5,6,R worked yesterday, now only 3

Dynos are almost harder on cars than racing itself. I've seen cars have failures on a dyno way more often than when racing.

Why? Theres no load on the car.
cole
19th May 2008, 04:43 PM
i can see that being true...just kind of sucks since i haven't had any troubles with it until now
any ideas on what it could be? not gonna lie, im a noob
someone on ls1tech thinks it might be a strut in the transmission that broke off and is now wedged in between the gears

that's because those cars never make it to the track.

Ask Dan what those rollers weigh. Compare that to the weight of your car. Inertia is inertia.

We can rebuild ours together. Mine is really pissed off. Lots of grinding during daily driving.

Those rollers aren't made of air. I thought the dynojet rollers weighed about 3000 pounds.
As far as what the problem is, I'll be really vauge, but correct. Something is not shaped right.

Depends on what's broken and what you do for upgrades when you're in there. Kind of have to get it apart and see what's broken.

my only issue now is getting it some place for work
if i had any room/space/knowledge, i'd take a whack at
i know josh(customssi) would be willing to help me out and cut me a fair deal, only problem is getting it out to palmyra

After thinking about it for a while I would be suspecting an issue with a shifter rail, maybe a bent/broken shift fork. Do you normally pound the life out of the trans while shifting?
Anyone have any good diagrams or pics of internals? I've run into issues with damaged detents on other transmissions making them stay in gear or be hell to get in or out of gears. I don't have a clue on how these are arranged in this case. Have you recently shifted real hard into that make-believe gear located between 1st & 3rd?
cole
19th May 2008, 05:51 PM
i would like to think i don't pound the life out of the trans...
im not sure if my stock shifter did the damage(which happens often) or what, plus i never even banged a gear with pro 5.0
as for recently banging 2nd, cant say i have

u want my address? :). most likely you severly ****ed up your 3-4 shift hub. which then takes out the input shaft. Never seen a problem with the shifting mechanisms. seen a few bent forks but usually just makes a grind into gear or a slight stick into gear. The little keys in the 3-4 hub when using a stock shifter are over thrown whick causes extra stress on the stamped steel piece. My guess is that they were pretty well on there way out when you installed your pro 5.0 shifter which was mis installed and shifted them either farther then the stock whick then broke the keys. lodging the hub into gear. then when its stuck and you tug the **** out of it to get it out of gear is when the shift fork is bent. Have seen a couple with the keys break into two and then run through the gears. Kind look like one of those penny flatners when don. :). Billet keys for 3-4 always. just my inexperienced .02 cents

In all seriousness, I've got a garage that I'm just storing some parts in that only gets used on an off an on basis that if you wanted to grab some guys and tear it apart it would be no issue at all.

depending on whats all busted, i think i may opt for something like the rebuild kit from sixspeedsinc

At least you dont have a broken tail houseing like I do. That is why i didnt dyno. I figured that probably wouldnt be a good idea. So i might be looking at spending 3grand for a rebuilt tranny and then somemore for a new clutch and am a going to get a torq arm relocation braket and torq arm so it dont break again.

21st May 2008, 09:25 PM
^^ was there anything else wrong with the trans besides the tail?
JD 01SS
21st May 2008, 09:37 PM
Dont know yet about the internals but the top part of the trand has jb weld on it. So this has happend to the last guy who owned the car only much worse and then patched it and sold it. My guess is that although i dont grind grind gears but the last guy was hard on **** it would seem so my guess is that half the internals are worn out.

i still think its somehow related to the shifter install, is there anything that you can remember adjusting with that shifter or problems you had when you installed the pro 5.0?
i just find it to be a strange coincidence that 1 day after a pro 5.0 install that your transmission takes a dump.
smoksho
22nd May 2008, 01:16 AM
totally not uncommon if the shifter is installed incorrectly. first shifts through gears can break the keys or "dogs" in a transmission.
cole
22nd May 2008, 09:40 AM
the shifter was installed per instructions...rtv'd the actual base, applied thread lock to the new bolts, stops adjusted exactly as they should have, etc
im just thinking after a year of abuse with the stock shifter, and most likely overshifting, etc. on the transmission that this finally did it in

my probe gt did similiar issues.. i used a giant pry bar and jammed it in a gear it wouldnt go in, and a piece half the size of my finger nail came poking out of the pan... ended up being from the reverse lights switch but still.. i had no 2nd 4th or reverse in my case...
